IDENTIFICATION DEVICE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,866, dated May 17, 1904. Application filed September 20, 1902. Serial at. 124,192. (No model.)

To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HARRY CoNLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Identification Device, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accorn panying drawings, forming part of this specification.

My invention relates to an identification device, and is particularly intended for use in connection with a system for checking over, short, and damaged freight which I have de vised and which I designate the triplecheck system.

My invention consists in part in the combination, with a record-sheet provided with an identification character, of a marking-sheet adapted to mark a similar identification character directly upon the article to be identified.

My invention also consists in certain other novel features, which are described in the following specification and pointed out in the claims affixed hereto.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the preferred form of my device, Figure 1 is a View showing one of the record-sheets. Fig. 2 is a view showing a part of one of the record-sheets and one of the stencil-sheets; and Fig. 3 is an edge view of the book of sheets, showing one of the record-coupons and one of the stencil-sheets detached.

Like marks of reference refer to similar parts in the several views of the drawings.

Each of the devices consist of a book composed of a number of record-sheets and a number of stencil or marking sheets. The record-sheets may be made of ordinary paper;

but the stencil-sheets are preferably of thicker material, as shown in the drawings, so as to enable them to be successfully used as stencils. The stencil-sheets are made detachable,

preferably by a suitable weakened line dividing the sheet into a coupon 11 and a stub 11. Each of the record-sheets is divided, by means of a weakened line 12, into a stub 13 and a detachable coupon 14. Each of these partsviz., the stub 13 and coupon 14is provided with suitable blank spaces for filling in the necessary data concerning the freight to be identified. In addition to these blank spaces each of the parts of the sheet is provided with an identification number or character 15. The corresponding stencil-sheet coupon 11 is provided with an identification-number 16, corresponding to the number 15 of the stub 13 and coupon 14. The stencil-sheet coupon 11 is also preferably provided with the name of the road checking the freight, as shown at 17, and also with the name of the station at which the freight is checked. as shown at 18. In addi tion to these marks upon the stencil-sheet 11 I preferably provide the sheet with a distinctive mark or design, as shown at 19, so as to readily indicate to any one that the freight is marked by my system. Similar characters 20 may also be printed upon the stub 13 and coupon 14, although this is unnecessary. The book is preferably provided with a flexible back 21, as shown.

As has been above stated, my device is particularly intended for use with what I term the triple-check system. So much of this system will now be explained as is necessary to understand the use of my device.

In the use of my device each platform clerk is provided with one of the books shown in the drawings. When the clerk discovers a piece of freight or a lot of freight which is either over, short, or damaged, he will fill in the stub 13 and coupon 14 with all the data obtainable from the freight. He will then detach the corresponding stencil-sheet coupon 11 and stencil upon the piece of freight or upon each piece, if there are more than one, the several characters contained upon the stencil-sheet coupon. He will then detach the coupon 14 and deliver the same to the clerk having charge of over, short, and damaged freight and will retain the stub 13. From the stub 13 and coupon 14 various other entries are made in connection with my system which it is not necessary to describe.

By the use of the stencil any number of pieces can be marked in one lot, and the marks upon the freight will notbe liable to be lost, as would be the case if they were placed upon a card and the card fastened to the freight.

Hence a permanent record is made upon each piece of freight, and such record bears a number by which it can be readily identified by referring to the various entries made in carrying out the system.

It will be seen that from the outset the stencil-sheet coupon 11 is provided with the proper identification character 16, corresponding exactly to the identification character 15 on the record-sheet, and that this character 16 is the only one of its series which the marking or stencil sheet is adapted to mark upon the article to be identified. This eliminates all possibility of error, and the platform clerk is compelled by this arrangement to mark the proper identification character 16 upon the article. determines the character to be marked upon the article to be identified, leaving no opportunity for the clerk to make a mistake in transferring or reproducing the character 15 of the record-sheet upon the article to be identified.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. In an identification device, the combination with a record-sheet provided with an identification character, of a marking device attached to said record-sheet and embodying means for marking a predetermined identification character similar to the character on said record-sheet directly upon the article to be identified.

2. In an identification device, the combination with a plurality of record-sheets each provided with a different identification character, of means attached to said record-sheets and embodying a set of identification characters differing from each other and each one of which is similar to the identification character on one of said record-sheets, said means also embodying a set of similar identification characters similar to each other, and being adapted to mark said identification characters directly upon the article to be identified.

3. In an identification device, the combination with a record-sheet provided with an identification character, of a marking-sheet attached to said record-sheet and embodying means for marking a predetermined identification character similar to the character on said record-sheet directly upon the article to be identified.

4:. In an identification device, the combination with a plurality of record-sheets, each provided with a different identification character, of a plurality of marking-sheets attached to said record-sheets and provided with similar identification characters, said marking-sheets being adapted to mark said identification characters directly upon the article to be identified.

5. 6. In an identification device, the combination with a plurality of record-sheets, each provided with a different identification character, of a plurality of marking-sheets attached to said record-sheets and each provided with an indentification character corresponding to one or said record-sheets, all of said marking-sheets being provided with a common identification character, said markingsheets being adapted to mark said identification characters directly upon the article to be identified.

7 In an identification device, the combination with a plurality of two-part record-sheets, each provided with a different identification character, of a plurality of marking-sheets attached to said record-sheets and each provided with an identification character corresponding to one of the record-sheets, all of said marking-sheets being provided with a common identification character, said marking sheets being adapted to mark said identification characters directly upon the article to be identified.

8. In an identification device, the combination with a record-sheet provided with an identification character, of a stencil-sheet attached to said record-sheet and provided with a similar identification character.

9. In an identification device, the combination with a plurality of record-sheets each provided with a different identification character, of a plurality of stencil-sheets attached to said record-sheets and provided with similar identification characters;

10. In an identification device, the combination with atwo-part record-sheet, each part of which is provided with a similar identification character, of a stencil-sheet attached to said record-sheet and provided withasimilar identification character.

12. In an identification device, the combination with aplurality of two-part record-sheets H detachable stencil-sheets provided with corresponding identification characters, and bound in book form with said record-sheets.
