` LAMP-EXTINGUISHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to lamp-extinguishers, and more particularly to that class of lamps which are provided with mechanism for extinguishingy the flame when the lamp tips over.
The object of my invention is to provide simple and eective means for snuiling the wick of a lamp and extinguishing the same should the lamp be accidentally tilted or upset. To this end, I have devised mechanism particularlydesigned for a lamp having a circular wick. The mechanism is located in the body of the lamp and is adapted to be automatically actuated when the lamp falls or tips over, the construction of the mechanism being such that the parts thereof will be restored to their normal condition when the lamp is replaced in its proper position.
Referring to the drawing forming a part of this specification, I have illustrated a vertical sectional view of a lamp equipped with my extinguisher.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 desige nates the base of a lamp having a central wick actuating casing 2, said casing being surrounded by a Wick 3. Suitably secured to the casing 2 is a bowl or receptacle 4 for the oil or fluid with .which the wick?) is to be saturated to burn at'the top of the casing 2. The bowl or receptacle l is formed with an interiorly screw-threaded mouth 5 for a burner 6, this burner being screwed in the mouth 5, whereby it can be easily removed when the wick 3 is to be renewed. The burner 6 is formed with a central sleeve 7 for housing the upper part of the wick 3.
In the base 1 is located a spider 8 and suitably secured in said spider 1s a vertical tube 9, said tube extending from the bottom of the lamp upwardly into the casing 2. In the upper end of the tube 9 is fixed a tube 10 of a smaller diameter than the tube 9, the lower end of this tube providing an annular shoulder 11.
Located in the tube 9 is a stepped plunger 12, the upper end of which is threaded, as
at 13, to receive an adjustable extinguisher or snuer 111, said extinguisher or snuifer having a depending central portion 15 and a depending annular flange 16, the central portion 15 being adapted to enter the casing 2, while the flange 16 embraces the upper edge of the sleeve 7, when said extinguisher or snuffer is lowered, as will be presently described. A nut 17 is mounted uponthe threaded end 13 of the plunger 12, to pretating.
Interposed between the lower end of the tube 10 and the shoulder 18 of the plunger 12 is a coil spring 19, this spring encircling the plunger and having a tendency to force said plunger downward, due to the fact that the spring is held under tension by said plunger, when the lamp is in an upright position as shown.
The tube 9 and the casing 2 are provided with alining vertical slots 20 and extending through said slots is a screw 21, carried by the plunger 12. This screw is adapted to limit the downward movement of the plunger 12, when the lamp is tilted.
It is apparent from the construction of my lamp that I have devised a novel downwardly moving extinguishing device or snuffer, which 1s particularly designed for extinguishing the flame of a circular burner.
The operation is substantially as follows: l/Vhen the lamp is resting upon a table or suitable support, the plunger 12 will be maintained by contact with the table or support in its forward position, holding the eX- tinguisher or snuffer 14- a suHicient distance above the wick, to permit of the same being ignited, and to freely burn. When in this position the spring 19 is retained under tension. Assuming now thatthe lamp should be accidentally tilted or upset the spring 19 is free to act, and consequently forces the plunger 12 downwardly, causing the extinguisher or snuffer to .be clapped upon the burner and smother or extinguish the flame thereof. Immediately upon the lamp being placed in an upright position upon a suitable support, the extinguisher or snufl'er will be elevated and the wick can again be lighted.
For the successful operation of my invention, it is necessary that the weight of the lamp rupon a support be sufficient to overcome the tension of the spring 19 and retain the plunger 12 in an elevated position. It
is also apparent from the construction of my vent the extinguisher or snufer from rolamp that it is impossible for the same to be carried in the hand with the lamp burning, unless the plunger 12 is manually held in an elevated position.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, is
l. The combination with a lamp having a wick supporting casing and a burner having a `sleeve surrounding the upper end of said casing, of a slotted tube ,mounted in said casing, an upper tube extending in and secured to the upper end of said slotted tube, a downwardly movable stepped plunger arranged in said tubes and of a length as to project above said casing, a spring mounted in the slotted tube and interposed between one of the steps of the plunger and the lower end of saidy upper tube, said plunger normally maintained in an elevated position by the support for said lamp against the action of said spring, said spring adapted to automatically lower the plunger when the lower end of the plunger is released and an extinguisher mounted upon the upper end of said plunger and formed with a depending central portion and a depending annular flange, said central portion adapted to automatically engage in said casing and said flange adapted to automatically surround said sleeve when the plunger is released whereby the flame is extinguished.
2. The combination with a lamp having a wick supporting casing and a burner having a sleeve surrounding the upper end of said casing, of a slotted tube mounted in said casing, an upper tube extending in and secured to the upper end of said slotted tube, a downwardly movable stepped plunger arranged in said tubes and of a length as to project above said casing, a spring mounted in the slotted tube and interposed between one of the steps of the plunger and the lower end of said upper tube, said plunger normally maintained in an elevated position by the support for said lamp against the action of said spring, said spring adapted to automatically lower the plunger when the lower end of the plunger is released, an extinguisher mounted upon the upper end of said plunger and formed with a depending central portion and-a depending annular flange, said central portion adapted to automatically engage in said casing and said flange adapted to automatically surround said sleeve when the plunger is released whereby the flame is extinguished, and means carried by said plunger and extending through the slot of the slotted tube and through therbase of' the lamp 'for limit-ing the downward movement of' the plunger when the latter is released.
3. The combination with a lamp having a wick supporting casing and a burner having a sleeve surrounding the upper end of said casing, of a slotted tube niounted in said casing, an upper tube extending in and se cured to the upper end of said slotted tube, a downwardly movablestepped plunger arranged in said tubes and of a length as to project above said casing, a spring mounted in the slotted tube and interposed between one of the steps of the plunger and the lower end of said upper tube, said plunger normally maintained in an elevated position by the support for said lamp against the action of said spring, said spring adapted to automatically lower the plunger when the lower end of the plunger is released, an extinguisher mounted upon the upper end of said plunger and formed with a depending cen trail portion and a depending flange, said central portion adapted to automatically engage in said casing and said flange adapted to automatically surround said sleeve when the plunger is released whereby the flame is extinguished, and means for detachably connesting the extinguisher to the upper end of the plunger.
