This invention relates to combined snuffing and lighting devices for candles, and aims to provide a device of this character wherein the handle or shaft thereof comprises a plurality of telescopic sections so that the length of the handle or shaft may be adjusted at will.
Furthermore there is provided automatically operable means whereby the candle lighter taper may be fed from its tube while the same is burning and Without necessitating the lowering of the device to extend the taper by hand.
The snuifer is of such construction as to provide a tro-ugh around its open end and interiorly thereof to catch pieces of burnt candle wicks and falling wax so that the same will not drop upon the altar or other place of support.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved snuffing and lighting device.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary longitudinal section through the sectional handle or shaft.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view somewhat similar to Figure 2 taken through the adja- So cent ends of two of the sections disclosing more clearly the means for preventing accidental sliding movement of the sections with respect to each other and for limiting the outward sliding movement of the sections.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary side elevation of the inner end of one of the sections.

Figure 6 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the taper feed mechanism.
Now having particular reference to the drawings, my novel device consists of an elongated handle consisting preferably of three sections, the outermostsection consisting of an elongated solid wood or other suitable material handle end 5, the inner end of which is formed with a longitudinally extending socket 6 within which is tightly arranged the inner end of the next adjacent sect-ion 7 1928. rFhe outer ends of the hollow metallic sections are formed with inwardly extending tianges to provide in each instance an abutment 8. while the inner end of each metallic section is formed with an outwardly extendfiange 9 for frictional engagement within the interior of the next adjacent tube to prevent wobbling of the sections with respect to each other.
YThe inner ends of the sliding tube sections are formed with exterior rearwardly extending struck out tongues 10 to provide leaf springs frictionally engaging the interior of the next adjacent section to prevent the accidental telescopic movement of the sections with respect to each other. Furthermore, the outer end of each tongue will engage against the fiange 8 of the section within which it is arranged to limit the outward movement of the sections with respect to each other, see Figure 3.
rlhe uppermost section of the shaft or handle is designated by the reference character 11, and the same is of goose neck formation so as to have an inverted outer end 12. Arranged upon th-e end of this inverted end of the gooseneck is a conical shaped metallic hood 13 open at its lower end and having a lining 14 of asbestos or other similar material. The lower open end of this hood 13 is provided with threads for receiving a threaded ring 15, the outer end of which is formed with an inwardly extending iiared rim 16 hollow metallic construction as kso as to provide a trough 17 at the interior thereof. This trough being for the purpose of catching pieces of burnt candle wick greaseI` or wax flowing from the candle, and other foreign material that may be knocked from the candle during the shutting thereof.
Projecting tangentially from the outer goose neck section 11 adjacent its inner end and having communication with the interior thereof is a tube 18 projected into which and through the goose neck section 11 is a conventional taper 19. Pivoted to this tube 1S intermediate its end is the forked inner arm 2O of a bell crank 21, the outer arm of which extends teward the outer end ef the tube and being provided at its outer end with a weight engagement with the taper when the handle 2.3. Associated with the pivotal connection between the dog and the legs of said bell crank fork is a suitable spring whereby to normally maintain the forward end of the dog in engagement with the taper 19 Within said tube 18 and also to retain the weight 23 against said tube. However, the tension of the spring is less than the weight 23 so that when the device is tilted in a direction toward the left, the weight 23 will cause the rocking of the bell crank and the forward movement of the dog to feed the taper to the tube 18.
It will thus be seen that this structure provides a means whereby the taper may be fed through the tube in an automatic manner and without requiring the lowering of the. device and the projection of the taper by hand.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is:
1. In a device of the character described, an elongated hollow handle shaft, a taper guide tube provided with a slot projecting outwardly of said shaft and communicating with the interior thereof, a bell crank pivotally mounted on the handle, a weight member associated with the upper arm of the bell crank and adapted to rest on said tube, and a dog pivoted to the lower arm of the bell crank, the forward end thereof extending through the slot in the taper guide tube and adapted to move a taper outwardly of the handle when the same is tilted to cause a rocking of the bell crank under the action of said weight.
2. In a device of the character described, an elongated hollow handle shaft, a taper guide tube provided with a slot projecting outwardly of said shaft and communicating with the interior of the shaft at the upper end of the shaft, a weight member rockably mounted on said guide tube, a dog pivotally mounted on the guide tube and operatively associated with said weight member, the forward end of said dog adapted to extend through the slot in the guide tube for moving a taper outwardly of the handle when the same is. tilted to cause a shifting ofthe weight.
3. In combination, a candle snuffer embodying a snuffing hood and a handle for the hood, of a taper guide tube projecting forwardly of the upper end of the handle, a weight member rockably supported on the taperk guide tube, said guide tube being provided with a slot, and a taper ejecting member operatively associated with the weight and adapted to extend through the slot for In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature.
