To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT L. SCHNEIDER, a citizen of the-United States of America, residing at Braddock, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamplighting Devices, of which the fol lowing is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to lamp lighters, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a lighting device, that can be advantageously used in connection with miners lamp for igniting the wick thereof, without resorting to the use of matches or the removal of the chimney or other parts of a lamp.

Another object of this invention is to furnish a miners lamp with an auxiliary lighting wick that has a snutfer which is removed from the auxiliary wick simultaneously with an ad'ustment of the main wick of the lamp.

ther object of this invention is to furnish a. wick lamp with a spark producing device that can be safely used for lighting the wick of the lamp.

A still further object of the invention is to accomplish the above results by a device that is simple in construction, free from injury for ordinary use and highly eflicient for the purposes for which it is intended.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.

In the drawing there is illustrated a portion of an ordinary miners lamp comprising an oil reservoir 1 having a closed neck 2 that; has the outer wall thereof screw threaded, as at3. Screwed upon the neck 2 is an interiorly screw threaded chimney holder 4; provided with an adjustable supporting ring 5 for the lower end of a chimmy 6.

Centrally of the neck 2 is a wick tube 7 containing the upper end of a wick 8 that now be had to the drawing,

Engagingthe upper end of the wick 8 is an elevating or adjusting rod 9 that 7 through aguide 10 arranged within the reservoir l carried-by the bottom thereof, said d xtend ng from the bottom of the res: ervioir and having a head or handle 11 whereby said rod can be adjusted to raise or lower the wick 8 soldered or otherwise connected to he upper end of the guide .10 and extending through an opening provided therefor in the neck 2 is an auxiliary Wick tube 12 containing an auxiliary wick 13. The Wick tube 12 is arranged in parallelism with the wick tube 7 and fitting over the upper open end of the tube 12 is a snufiing cap 14 that is soldered or otherwise connected to the upper end of the adjusting rod 9, so that said snuifing cap will be elevated simultaneously with an elevation of the main wick 8. The lower end of the auxiliary wick tube 12 closed and this tube is adapted to contain a small quantity of gasolene that is absorbed by the auxiliary wickl3 to permit of said wick being easily ignited.

Riveted or otherwise mounted upon the top of the neck 2, adjacent to the upper end of the auxiliary tube 12, is a bearing 15 for a longitudinal shaft 10, said shaft extending through an opening provided therefor in the chimney holder 4 and havin the outer end thereo provided with a hen or hand-wheel 17 that permits of said shaft being revolved. The inner end of the shaft 16 is reduced to provide a screw threaded shank 18 and mounted upon said shank is a toothed or roughenedstrike-wheel 19 that engages a spark producing material 20 preferably consisting of cerium or the alloys of cerium. Said member 20 is carried by a bracket 21 forming part of the bearing 15. The member 20 is arranged so that as it is struck by the roughened periphery of the strike-wheel 19 the sparks from the member will be projectcd in the direction of the auxiliary wick 13 and ignite said wick, when the snufiing cap 14 is elevated. With the upper end of the auxiliary wick 13 ignited, the upper end of the main wick 8 is lighted from said auxiliary wick and continues to burn during the use of the lamp.
