HAND TOOL-CASE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES lVIADEIRA, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Stony Creek, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand Tool-Cases, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in tool cabinets and is designed more especially with reference to that class which may be termed portable.

It is the object of this invention to provide a novel device of this character which, when closed, will have the appearance of an ordinary dress suit case.

Furthermore, an object of this invention is to provide a novel device of this character which may be used not only as a tool cabinet or holder, but as a display case.

It is a still further object of this invention to provide in a device of this kind, novel means whereby the handle or carrying means is so centered that when the chest is closed, it comes in the middle of the top of the chest.

Finally an ob]ect of this invention is to provide a device of the character noted, possessing advantages in points of simplicity, efliciency and durability, proving at the same time comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

WVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, in which Figure 1, is a view in perspective of the cabinet or case closed. Fig. 2, is a view in perspective of the case opened, showing the tray therein. Fig. 8, is a view in perspective of the case open, with the tray removed.

In the drawings, A, indicates a case, rectangular in shape and having a portion as at B, cut away, this portion being approximately one-fourth of the case, and comprising a portion of the top and a side of the case. Hinged to the cut-away face of'the case is a cover C, which is adapted to conform to the cut away portion B, of the case Specification of Letters Patent.

so that when said cover is closed the case will have the appearance of an inclosed rectangular box. This cover is hinged by the ordinary hinges D, as is plainly shown in Fig. 1. Carried by the case and the cover are latches E, which are intended to hold the cover in locked or closed position. Secured to the top of the case are the metal strap-loops F, F, one end of the straps being secured to the upper or outer surface of the top wall, the opposite ends being secured to the under surface of the top. These loops are intended to hold the end strap G, which is of any well known construction. By having the metal loops or straps extending from I the upper surface of the top, means are pro vided whereby the hand grasp is held centrally of the top or adjacent the edge.

I/Vith the body of the case I, or chamber as it may be termed are arranged transverse strips K, one to each side of the case. These strips are intended to provide a rest for the tray L, which may be of any preferred construction, it being but necessary that it conform to the shape of a case, and fit snugly therein. The chamber beneath the tray, when said tray is in applied position, is for the reception of such tools as may be easily inserted therein. The strips K, are positioned at a point slightly below the side edges of the cut away portion B.

To the rear face M, of the case are secured brackets N, of any ordinary or preferred construction adapted to support tools of various kinds. WVit-hin the cover and secured to the top and side are suitably spaced blocks 0, which are provided with slots or openings P, adapted to receive saw blades. In order that the saws may not be displaced from the grooves or slots, straps R, are secured to an edge of the blocks and are adapted to engage a buckle S,carried by the straps T, secured to the side of the cover. These straps are arranged slightly to one side of the blocks in order that the saws may be held against any undue longitudinal movement, it being understood that the straps are drawn tightly into engagement with the saw blades.

It has been found in practice that a cabinet or case constructed according to this invention provides means wherein a square can be easily and conveniently carried, also saws, and other cumbersome tools.

It is to be stated that when the cabinet is being used for display, itis but necessary to drop the cover C, and as the said cover is approximately one-fourth the size of the case, the top of the cover will be flush with the bottom of the case and the tools or articles within the case are presented for easy inspection. The same means also provides easy access when the case is being used as a tool holder or cabinet.

A cabinet constructed according to this invention has been found, in practice, most advantageous, especially in view of the fact that a large sized steel square necessary to a carpenter may be easily stored in a case. Thus it can be seen that a portable tool holder is provided which fully conceals all implements therein. This in some localities is necessary as the transportation companies refuse to carry passengers with their implements of trade exposed.

Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'

As a new article of manufacture, a case having a portion of its top, front and sides cut away, strips arranged transversely of the case above the bottom thereof and secured to the ends of the case, a tray resting on the strips, a cover for the cut away portion conforming to the shape of the case, slotted blocks carried by the cover, a strap carried by the free end of each of the blocks, and a buckle for each strap carried by the cover adjacent the inner ends of the blocks.
