UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RINARD R. BULGER, OF/SOUTH BROWNSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
DOOR AND VTINDOW FASTENER.
To all whom t may concern.
Be it known that I, RiNARn R. BULGER, a citizen of ,the United States, residing at South Brownsville, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door and iVindow Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.
This invention relates to improvements in door and window fasteners.V
The object of the invention is to provide a portable door and window fastenin device which may be readily engaged with a door or window to securely fasten the saine in closed position.
Vith this and other objects. inpview, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrange- `ment of parts as will be described and articularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a door showing the mannerin which tire 'device is applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a .side elevation of the fastener showing the parts in operative position; Fig.v 3 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the parts in a.released position; Fig. 4 is a plan view of one of the keeper plates employed in connection with the fastener; and Fig. 5 is a top lan view of the fastener showing a modi ed construction lof the same.
ings, `1 denotes the fastener which is constructed in two parts or sections, 2 and 3.
The sections 2 andy 3 are hingedly connected together at their inner ends preferably by means of a rule joint connection, 4, whereby whenthe sections are straightened out in an operative position, a rigid brace will be formed thereby. The outer ends of the sections 2 and 3 are tapered to an edge, 5, the
. purpose of which will hereinafter appear.
The inner end of the section, 2, is recessed on its outer edge to form a shoulder, 6, with which is adapted to be engaged the right-angularly bent or hook-shaped outer end of a flat spring, 7 the opposite end of which is riveted or otherwise secured to the outer side of the adjacent .section 3, whereby when s'aidseetions are straightened out to an operative position, the hook end of the spring wi snap over and engage the Specification of Letztem Patent.

shoulder, 6, thereby holding said sections in alined operative position. The outer end of the spring, beyond the rightangular hook shaped portion of the same, is provided with an outwardly-curved spring finger, 8, which` is adapted to facilitate the engagement of the hooked end of the spring with the shoulder, 6, and to also4 provide a finger grip whereby the hooked end of the spring may be disenga ed from the shoulder. The inner l engaged. In 'practice one ofthe keeper plates, 10, is secured to one side of the door adjacent to its lower end and preferably near the outer edge of the same, while the inner keeper plate is secured to the floor in line with the keeper plate in the door at a suitable distance` therefrom whereby when the opposite ends of the fastener are engaged with the slots in said plates and the parts of the fastener straightened out to an operative position,` the door will be securely braced and held in a closed position.
In the modied form-of device shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing, the tapered ends, 13.
' of the sections are provided with a series of Referring more particularly to the drawteeth or pronvs, 14, which are adapted to be forced into t e floor and door whereby the opposite ends of the fastening will obtain a iirm engagement with the floor and door and will be prevented from slipping thereon. In the `latter form of the fastening, the keeper plates are dispensed with and when constructed in this form, the fastener may be readily carried about and applied to any door or window to securely hold the same inl and the minor details ofconstruction may be resorted to. Without; departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the-advantages of the inventioi'iv 'as dened in the appended claims Having thus described my invention7 what l claim as newsr and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is: j
1. A fastener ofthe character described comprising a plurality of sections having a rule joint connection, w spring catch secured to one of. said sections,'and a fastening lug formed-on the opposite' section and adapted to be engaged by the free'end of saidfspring catch whereby the parts 'are held in an operative position.
2. A door and Window fastener comprising a pair of hingedly cornected sections,
a spring catch carried by one of said sections,l
said catch having a right-angular or hookshaped end and an outwardly turned releasing finger, and a 'fastening shoulder formed on the other section and adapted to be en- .gaged by the right-angular hooked vend of vsaid spring When the parts are in an opervative position. y lv y In testimony whereof `I have hereunto set my hand in presence of tWo subscribing Wit- FRANK P. CoT'roM, H. C. DAvIsoN.
