SAMUEL BROWN, OF EASTHAMPTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO NASHAWANNUOK MFG. (10., OF EASTI-IAMPTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION.
MANS SUSPENDERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 6, 1908.
Patented Nov. 17, 1908.
Serial No. 425,464.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Easthampton, in the county of Hampshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mens Suspenders; and I do hereby declare the following when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1 a view in elevation of a pair of suspenders constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 a sectional view through one of the back ends on the line a 7) of Fig. 1.
This invention relates to an improvement in mens suspenders.
Heretofore the elastic and non-elastic webbing used in the manufacture of mens suspenders has been given an ornamental character either by printing designs upon it after the manner of printing fabrics, or by weaving it in looms of the Jacquard type which produce upon its surface ornamental patterns formed by over-shot threads. Of these two methods of ornamentation that by printing fails of its purpose because the effect is cheap, While the method of weaving in J acquard looms is so expensive as to be prohibitory in all but the highest class of goods.
The-object of my present invention is to utilize plain webbing in the production at a low cost of very richly ornamented suspenders without injury even to those portions of the webbing made elastic by the introduction of strands of india rubber.
lVith these ends in View my invention consists in a pair of mens suspenders comprising two shoulder straps, front suspender ends connected With the front ends of the said shoulder-straps, and narrower than the same. and elastic rear suspender ends connected with the rear ends of the said straps, all of the webbing, elastic and non-elastic, entering into the suspenders having its outer face ornamented by embossing producing raised and depressed surfaces.
In carrying out my invention the non-elastic shoulder straps 2, the narrow non-elastic front suspender ends 3 and the elastic rear suspender ends 4 of the suspenders are formed from plain suspendcr webbing which by subjection to heat and pressure between engraved rolls is provided upon its outer face with an ornamental, embossed pattern whereby at a small cost and without any injury to the elastic or non-elastic portions of the webbing the suspenders are greatly enriched in appearance. I say without injury to the elas tic or non-elastic portions of the webbing because contrary to expectation I have discovered that elastic webbing may be subjected to heat and pressure without any apparent deterioration in its elastic quality.
I claim As a new article of manufacture, a webbing having elastic and non-elastic strands entering into the webbing and having its outer face ornamented by embossing producing raised and depressed surfaces, whereby plain webbing may be utilized in the production of richly ornamented suspenders without injury to those portions of the webbing made elastic by the introduction of strands of india rubber.
I11 testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SAMUEL BROWN.
lVitnesses HENRY E. BARNETT, MARY FREIDAY.
