that class of hoisting drums which are used for closing and raising and holding and lowering orange peel or clam shell buckets, and the like, wherein is provided a cable for closing and raising the bucket and a second cable for holding the bucket while it opens by means of gravity.
It has heretofore been the custom with hoisting machinery to provide two winding drums, operable independently of each other,
one having the raising and closing cable wound thereon and the other having the holding and lowering cable woimd thereon, and to provide means whereby the operator may control each drum. Under such circumstances, it is necessary for the operator to be skilful in the manipulation of the levers for throwing into and out of operation the different drums, especially where the holding and lowering rope is used to assist the closing and raising rope in hoisting the bucket. If, under these circumstances, the drum for the holding and lowering rope is thrown into engagement too soon, it will permit the closing and raising rope to 'slacken and open the bucket. If the drum of the holding rope is not thrown into operation soon enough, then it is inefiectual in assisting the other cable in raising the load. Furthermore, in structures of this kind, when it is desired to dump a load and the holding and lowering rope is not taut and when the closing and raising cable is released, the bucket drops upon the holding cable, causing undue strain upon the machinery, and frequently causing the dumping of the load at a point not contemplated by the operator.
It is the object of my present invention to overcome the above objections.
Other objects of my invention will appear in the following specification and claims.
I have illustrated in the accompanying drawings for the purpose of disclosing my invention, one means of constructing my device.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my hoisting mechanism; Figs. 2 and 3 are a side and end elevation of the spider for connecting the two drums of the hoisting mechanism together; Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line 55 of Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on line 66 of Fig. 1; Fig. 7 is a view of one form of bucket used with my hoisting device.
In the embodiment of my invention illustrated in the drawings upon the end members 1 of a suitable frame I mount a shaft 2 whichv at its outer end has keyed thereto, a gear 4 driven by a pinion of the operating motor. Loosely mounted upon the shaft 2 between the end members of the frame is a pair of hoisting drums 5 and 6, the drum 5 having wound thereon the bucket holding and opening cable, and the drum 6 having wound thereon the bucket closing and hoisting cable.
The hub 7 of the drum 5 has an extension 8 thereon upon which is rotatably mounted a pulley 9, which when the drum 5 is rotated in the direction of the arrow (Fig. 4) is arranged to be connected with the drum through the rollers 10 operating in the transverse cam slots 11 on the periphery of the end of the drum. These rollers are held in position in the space formed between the inner periphery of the pulley and the end of the drum by means of a ring like member 12 which is arranged to be screwed to one end of the periphery of the pulley 9. Surrounding the pulley 9 is a brake band 13 which is arranged to make frictional engagement with the periphery of the pulley and hold the same when the brake operating mechanism is operated. One end of the brake band is secured to the strap end 14, which has eX- tending therefrom a bolt 15 arranged at its end to pass through a lug 16 formed on the side 1 of the frame and be held in position quent that this brake is used.

By depressing the outer end of the lever 21 it will be readily seen that the inner end thereof will move the brake band pulley. It will be noted, however, that due to the cam and roller connection between the drum and the brake band pulley that the drum may be rotated in the opposite direction without being affected by the brake band. By this arrangement the brake may be set and will not affect the rotation of the drum in winding the cable but will operate as soon as the hauling of the bucket stops and the full weight of the bucket is carried by the holding cable.
The drum 6 on which is wound the closing and hoisting cable is also loosely mounted upon the shaft 2 and is provided with a hold ing brake 24:. The brake band and operating mechanism therefore are substantially the same as the brake band described in connection with the holding drum 5. The loose connection between the brake band and the drum, however, which permits the rotation of the drum in one direction and which permits the operation of the brake band only when the drum is operated in a reverse direction, is not used in connection with the closing and hoisting drum as it is not fre- The drum 6 is connected with the shaft 2 through the mechanism of the friction clutch. This clutch comprises a hub 25 which fits within the drum, and has arranged on the periphery thereof a series of flat rings 26 provided on their opposite faces with a suitable bearing surface 27. The inner edges of these rings are cut out as at 28 (Fig. 5) to receive projections 29 formed on the hub 25, whereby while the rings will slip laterally on the hub, they will be rotated therewith.
Inter-posed between the rings 26 are a plurality of flat rings which have projections 30 formed thereon arranged to fit within longitudinal slots 31 formed in the inner periphery of the drum 6. The outer ring on the hub 25 has a projection 32 which is arranged to engage the end of the set screw 33 carried upon a lever 34 pivotally mounted upon a disk 36 which is securely bolted to and becomes an integral part of the hub The. lever 21 is pivoted at 22 to the frame 1 and 25. The drum 6 is prevented from any end play by the retaining ring 37. Mounted on the hub 25 near the shaft is a second lever 38, the end 39 of which is arranged to engage the lower end of the lever 34- when the outer end of the lever 38 is raised. A cor responding set of levers is mounted upon the opposite side of the shaft and the levers 38 of both sets are spread by a beveled member loosely mounted upon the shaft 2, which may be moved toward or away from the levers 38 by means of any lever connection. hen the beveled member 35 is moved toward the levers 38, it spreads the same, causing the screw 33 to engage the projection 32 of the outer ring of the clutch mechanism and the rings of the clutch will be compressed upon one another and the hub which is keyed upon the shaft 2 and the drum 6 frictionally connected together.
The means for automatically throwing into operation the drum 5 at the proper moment after the cable operated by the drum 6 has closed the bucket and causing the drum 5 to rotate with the drum (3 and wind its cable, comprises a hub 40 loosely mounted upon the shaft 2 and projecting in a recess formed in the end of the drum 5. This hub has extending rigidly therefrom between the ends of the drums 5 and 6, a spider 11, the ends of which are connected by bolts 42 to a flange 43 formed on the end of the drum 6. At the inner end of the hub a0 is a stop ring 414- which is bolted to the hub by means of bolts 45 and operating upon screw threads 46 formed on the periphery of the hub is a nut 47 having a feathered connection with the drum 5. The nut 47 is limited in its movement upon the hub 40 by the stop 4L4 at one end and the spider 41 at the other end, and the time required for the nut 47 to travel from one end of the hub to the other is equal to the time it takes for the closing and hoisting cable to close the bucket.
In operation, assuming that the nut at? is at the extreme right and that the bucket is open, the clutch mechanism for connecting the drum 6 with the driving shaft 2 is thrown into operation, and the drum '6 will be caused to rotate, winding the closing and hoisting cable. As the drum 6 is rotated, due to the threaded engagement thereof with the hub, the nut 47 will travel along the hub toward the opposite end thereof, and when the closing and hoisting cable has been wound sufiiciently to close the bucket, the nut 17 will jam against the abutment 4a causing the drum 5 to rotate and wind its cable. The bucket can now be hoisted to any desired position. \Vhen the bucket has been hoisted to the desired position it may be swung to any point where it is desired to dump the same, and the brake 13 is then applied holding the drum 5, and at the same time the clutch on the drum 6 is released.
This permits the drum 6 to rotate freely in a reverse direction while the bucket opens, the nut 47 being moved back along its thread. When the bucket is fully opened and the contents dumped, it may be lowered by gradually allowing the drum 5 to rotate upon the release of the brake 13.
I have illustrated in Fig. 7 the conven-' second drum to the first after the first drum has rotated for a predetermined period.
2. The combination with a shaft, of a pair of drums mounted thereon, a threaded member connected to one of said drums, a nut adapted to travel on said threaded member and connected to the other of said drums, and stops for limiting the movement of said nut to cause the drum to which it is connected to rotate with said threaded member.
3. The combination with a shaft, of a pair of drums loosely mounted thereon, a brake for one of said drums for holding the same, and means for automatically connecting the other of said drums to said first drum after it has rotated for a predetermined period.
4. The combination with a shaft, of a pair of hoisting drums loosely mounted thereon, a clutch for connecting one of said drums to said shaft, and means automatically operated by the rotation of said drum for connecting the second drum to the first drum after the first drum has rotated for a predetermined interval.
5. The combination with a shaft, of a pair of drums loosely mounted thereon, a clutch for connecting one of said drums to the shaft, a threaded member connected to said drum, a nut connected to the other of said drums and 0 erating on said threaded member, stops or limiting the travel of said nut on said threaded member, and a brake for said second drum.
6. The combination with a pair of hoisting drums, of a ring, and means for connecting said ring with one of said drums and permitting a lateral movement thereof, a threaded bearing connected with the other drums for causing a lateral movement of said ring, and means for limiting the movement of said ring on said threaded bearing.
