To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. HUNT, a citizen of the United States, residing at West New Brighton, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Hoisting Apparatus, of which the following. is a specification.
Drums for actuating ropes or chains in hoisting apparatus are frequently driven by friction when drawingr in the rope or chain, and allowed to revolve in the opposite direction when the weight is drawing off the rope or chain. Drums of this character have been made use of in elevating and excavating apparatus in' connection with buckets or dredges, usually known as the clamshell bucket in which there are twohalves hinged together, and closed by drawing upon the elevating rope, and opened by the weight of the bucket being suspended by a second rope or chain as the hoisting rope orchainis The present invention is especially available in connection with buckets of the aforesaid ,character but not necessarily limited thereto. Instead of havingl two drums separately actuated and requiring separate frictional devices, I make use of two drums controlled by friction in such a manner that it is only necessary for the attendant to make use of two regulating levers, or their equivalents, for controlling and directing the action of the power in operating ythe hoisting rope to close and elevate the bucket, and` in opening the bucket for the discharge of its contents, and closing and lowering the bucket to reiill the same, thus lessening the duties of the attendant, cheapening .the construction of the apparatus and rendering the same more rapid in operation as well as more durable and easily kept in repair. p n
In the drawings, Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of the drums and their actuating devices. Fig. 2 is a similar section with the parts arranged. slightly dierent, and Fig. 3 is a diagram illustrating the connectionsto the elevating or excavating bucket.
A is a shaft supported in any suitable bearings and having upon it a wheel B that is driven by suitable power, such as by a pinion gearing into teeth upon the edge thereof,
by a belt or chain to the motor, or by frc- Y tional contact in any desired way.
O is the main hoisting drum to which the rope or chain. E is connected at one end or Wound around the drum, and a suitable frictional connection F intervenes between the drum O and the driving wheel B, and adjacent to the drum O is the secondary drum G for the rope or chain'I-I, and there is africtional connection at I between the drums O and G, which frictional connection may be of any desired character.
In Fig. l I have represented blocks of wood intervening between the flat ends of the drums, and in Fig. 2 l have represented fiat',
metallic, frictional surfaces, and to this sec-V ondary drum G a frictional brake is applied of any desired character. I have represented aY strap K as passing around an annular l flange upon the secondary drum, such strap being tightened or loosened by the action of a lever or other device of any desiredcharacter, and there is a spring L adapted to press the secondary drum G toward the main drum O to obtain the necessary frictional contact between the friction devices I.
It is usually advantageous to permanently connect the drum C with the shaft A and to allow the driving wheel B to remain loose upon the shaft A so that the driving wheel may be pressed toward the drum O for increasing the frictional contact F, there being a key 3 and pin 4 acted upon by a lever,
screw, or other device, as usual in frictional of the driving wheel B being keyed upon the shaft A so as to rotate with it, in which instance the drum O is loose upon the shaft A, and the drum is moved endwise against the frictional contact F instead of the driving wheel being moved, and to effect this movement any desired appliances may be provided, such for instance as the key 13 and ICO the axial pin 14; against which the screw M is caused to act by the lever N.
In using this device with a clam shell bucket, the frictional brake K is slackened and the lever N applied to produce friction between B and C and rotate the drum C to draw upon the main chain or rope E to close such bucket and draw the same up, and the slack of the chain H is taken up at the same time bythe rotation of the secondary drum G by frictional contact with the drum C, and in order to prevent any slackness in the chain H it is preferable to make the drum G slightly larger than the drum C.
Vhen the bucket has been raised to the desired height it is only necessary to hold the drum G by the frictional brake K and lessen the friction at F by turning back the lever N, and the weight will draw off a portion of the chain from the drum C and the bucket opens to discharge the contents. The bucket can then be lowered by partially relieving the friction of the brake K, and in so doing the chains or ropes will be drawn off both drums C and G, and when the bucket has been lowered to the extreme point, friction is again applied at F to the drum C to wind up the main chain E and close the bucket and draw the same up to the place of delivery.
Where it is desired to close the bucket after discharging its contents, and before lowering the same, it is advantageous to apply a frictional brake to hold the drum C. I have represented the same in the form of a strap P around an annular flange upon the drum C so that after the bucket has been raised and its contents discharged, by transferring the weight to the rope or chain H by holding the drum G by the blake K, the brake P can be applied to the drum C and the brake K relieved, so that the weight is transferred to the main chain E and drum C, and thelowering of the bucket is effected by the brake P, the chains drawing olf the drums as the weight descends, and then the weight is again transferred to the chain H just before the bucket reaches the botton, by tightening the frictional brake K, and slackening the fric'- tional brake P so as to open the bucket previous to closing the same to grasp the load and draw the same up.

The combination in ahoisting apparatus, of two contiguous drums and means for driving the main drum, a frictional connection between the drums fordriving the secondary drum, and a brake for controlling the second ary drnni, whereby the secondary drum is normally driven by the main drum and regulated by the brake, substantially as specified.
2. The combination inahoistingapparatus, of a shaft and two drums on said shaft, and hoisting chains or ropes to the drums, a driving wheel and frictional connection between the same and the main drum, and ahandactuated device for controllingr such friction, a frictional device between the main and the secondary drums, and a hand actuated frictional brake to the secondary drum,substan tially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combinationinahoistingapparatns, of a shaft and two drums on said shaft, and hoisting chains or ropes to the drums, a driving wheel and frictional connection between the saine and the main drum, and a hand actuated device for controlling such friction, "a frictional device between the main and the secondary drums, and a hand actuated frictional brake to the secondary drum, and a hand actuated frictional device for holding the main drum and controlling the movement of the same as the rope or chain is drawn off, substantially as set forth.
4. Thecombinationinahoistingapparatns, of a shaft and main hoisting drum therewith connected, a driving wheel loose upon the shaft, a frictional connection between the driving wheel and themain drum, a pin, key, and hand actuated device for controlling the friction between. the driving wheel and the main drum, a secondary drum on the same shaft, and frictional-surfaces between the two drums, a spring for applying friction to such surfaces, a band and hand actuated mechanism for controlling the friction of the same in stopping the secondary drum or allowing the same to rotate as the rope or chain is drawn oit, substantially as specified.
5. The combination in a hoisting apparatus, of a shaft and main hoisting drum therewith connected, a driving Wheel loose upon the shaft, a frictional connection between the driving wheel and the main drum,a pin, key, and hand actuated device for controlling the friction between the driving wheel and the main drum, a secondary drum on the same shaft, and frictional surfaces between the two drums, a spring for applying friction to such surfaces, a band and hand actuated mechanism for controlling the friction of the same in stopping the secondary drum or allowing the same to rotate as the rope or chain is drawn o, a frictional strap and means for actuating the same by hand to hold the main drum or control its movement as the rope or chain is drawn off, substantially as set forth.
