To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY OCoNNoR, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Lombardy, county of Leeds, in the Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stanchions; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to stanchions.
The object of my invention is to provide a stanchion which is pivotally supported from the top and which has its lower end free to swing, and to provide means for guiding the lower swinging end of the stanchion.
A further object of my invention is to provide means for limiting the pivotal movement of the stanchion.
A further object of my invention is to provide means for returning the stanchion to a predetermined position after it has been actuated on its pivotal support.
A further object is to provide means for actuating and locking the pivoted side of the stanchion to close the same when the stanchion is in any position.
A further object is to provide a locking means for the pivoted member of the stanchion which may be unlocked independently of the closing means; and, my invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as herein illustrated, described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, I have illustrated one form of embodiment of my invention, in which drawings similar reference characters designate corresponding parts, and in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation; Fig. 2 is a top plan view; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail in side elevation of an upper supporting member; Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of an upper supporting member; Fig. 5 is a top plan view of a lower cross bar; Fig. 6 is a bottom plan view of a lower cross bar; Fig. 7 is a plan view of a base plate adapted to guide the lower end of the stanchion in its movement, and Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the arcuate base plate 26 detached.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a section of a stanchion frame, and 2 the floor. Secured to the stanchion frame 1 by screws or other suitable fastening device is an upper supporting member 3, provided with a shoulder a on its upper surface, and provided with rounded stops or lugs 5 on its lower surface, which stops are adapted to limit the movement of the upper cross bar of the stanchion when the same is moved on its pivotal support, as hereinafter described.
The upper supporting member 3 is provided with an extension 6, having an opening 7 therethrough. Pivotally disposed in the opening 7 is a vertical pintle 8, maintained in position by a pin 9, which bears on a washer 10.
A second opening or perforation 38 may be provided in the member 3 and a screw 37 or similar fastening may be passed through this opening to secure the member to the frame 1.
Secured on the pivot 8 is an upper curved cross bar, provided with the usual slot, and secured at one end to the right-hand standard 12. A bottom cross bar 13 is provided with ears 14., to one of which ears is secured the right-hand standard, as by means of the pin 15. The lower end of the left-hand. standard 16 is pivotally secured to the ears 011 the opposite end of the bottom cross bar, as by means of the pivot 17 so that it is free to slide at its upper end through the slot 18 of the upper cross bar 11, to assume the po sition shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
Secured to the upper end of the movable standard 16, is a roller 19 (Fig. 2), which is adapted to bear on the upper surface of the upper cross bar 11, and reduce the friction caused by the movement of the pivoted standard 16.
For the purpose of locking the standard 16 in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, 1 provide a hook 20, which is pivoted as at 21, to the upper cross bar 11. To maintain the hook 20 normally in position, there is provided a curved spring 22, having one end bearing on the outer surface of the hook 20, and having its opposite end secured to the cross bar 11 by any suitable means. The cross bar 11 is curved, so that the roller 19 will always bear on the upper surface there: of, to reduce the friction of the movement of the vertical member 16.
For the purpose of maintaining the stanchion in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, there is provided a double spring 28, the opposite ends of which bear on the pin 9, so that when the stanchionis moved on its pivotal support axially, it will be returned to the position shown in Fig. 2, that is parallel with the stanchion frame. This axial movement is limited by the stops 5, and also by the angular lug 24, which rides in the slot 25 formed in an arcuate base plate 26, the latter of which is secured to the floor 2. The are plate 22 rises from the front toward the rear to allow of the backward swing of cross bar 13' and standards 12 and 16.
When the stanchion is moved axially as by the animal which is confined in the stanchion turning its head, the flat faces of the lug 24 ride against the walls of the slot 25.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the supporting bar '1 is brokenoif to indicate that it is c0ntinned. As is common in the art, a line of stanchions is secured to the supporting bar. Secured on the supporting bar at proper intervals, is a plurality of guide members 27, in which is slidably disposed a rod 28, hav ing secured thereto at one end a lever 29, which lever is pivoted to the upper face of the supporting bar 1, as at 31. By means of this lever 29, the rod 28 may be reciprocated longitudinally in the guide members 27 An arm 32 is secured to the movable vertical standard 16, and'terminates in a projecting finger The finger 33 is engaged by an eye 34 formed on one end of an arm 35, the opposite end of which is pivoted to the slidable rod 28, as at 36. The vertical standard 16 being in the dotted line position of Fig.
1, by actuating the lever 29, the standard 16 will be carried to its full line position, and there locked by the member 20.
If it is desired to release any particular standard 16, where there are a plurality of stanchions carried by the supporting bar 1, the arm 35 may be rocked on its pivotal support 86, and the arm 32 will be thereby released to permit the individual movement of the adjacent standard 16. Otherwise, all of the standards 16 connected to the slidable rod 28 will be actuated by its movement. The pivotal connection formed by the eye 3 f on the finger 33 is necessary, on account of the swinging and pivotal movement of the stanchion on its top support.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In astanchion, a base plate, a pair of bars hingedly connected thereto, means to maintain said bars in vertically parallel relation, a pintle for pivotally mounting said stanchion, a rod projecting from said pintle, a double acting spring acting on the opposite sides of said rod whereby a yielding rotary motion is allowed said stanchion, said stanchion being returned to its normal position ov the action of the aforesaid spring.
2. In a stanchion, a base plate, a pair of bars hingedly connected thereto, means to maintain said bars in vertically parallel relation, a pintle for pivotally mounting said stanchion and a double acting spring coacting with said pintle whereby said stanchion may be given a yielding rotary motion.
3. In a stanchion, a movable bar, a sliding rod, a link pivotally connected to said bar and movable therewith, and a second link connecting said first link and the aforesaid movable bar whereby said bar is moved by movement of said rod.
4. In a stanchion, a movable bar, a sliding rod, a link pivotally connected to said bar and movable therewith, a second link removably attached to said first link and connections between said second link and said movable bar whereby said bar is moved by the movement of said rod.
5. In a stanchion,amovable bar,asliding rod, a link pivotally connected to said bar and movable therewith, an eye on said link, a second link removably inserted in the eye of'said first named link and connections between said second named link and said movable bar whereby said bar may be moved by the movement of said rod.
