To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM S. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Deerfield, in the county of Randolph, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice-Shavers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention has relation to ice-shavers of the class combiniru with them a hollow body or reservoir in which the ice cut off by a planing bit is adapted to be collected to be removed and used as desired.

The object of the invention is to provide improvements in the class of devices referred to which will render them more efficient and generally serviceable than heretofore.

The nature of the invention is fully and clearly ascertainable from the device portrayed in the annexed drawings, forming a part of this specification, in view of which it will first be described with respect to its construction and mode of operation and use, and then be pointed out in the subjoined claim.

In the drawings 1 designates a casin of metal cast or stamped up to form an e ongated body with a practically flat top 2 and the stub bottom 3, and sides 4 that incline from their upper edges inward to the bottom. The top has an opening 5 formed in it that may be closed with a hinged lid 6 when the device is in use, and opened when it is desired to dischar e its contents. The stub bottom 3 covers t e forward end of the casing as shown in Fig. 4.

The rear end terminates short of the sides 4, as shown at 7 in Fig. 4, and the extension of the sides below the terminal line of the rear end are provided. with rounded apertures or holes 8 at the rear and short slots 9,

serves as a stop to the bit 10 as shown in Fig. 4.

The said clamping connection is effected by placing the bit between the sides, with its rear portion extending beyond the lower rear stop ed e 7 of the casing and resting at its upper sur see thereagainst, as shown.

By providing the bit with an offset and extending the offset ice-shaving end portion in a different plane from the body portion, the former can be more readily supported so as to bring it in the plane of its movement and hence be made to shave the ice more easily, as will be readily understood.

14 and 15 designate headed bolts that are screw-threaded on the ends opposite to the heads adapting them to have nuts turned thereon. The clamping bolt 14 is passed through the round holes 8 at the rear of the sides and the clamping bolt 15 is in like manner engaged with the short vertically disposed slots 9 in said sides intermediate of their ends, the body of the bit 10 being arranged above the said bolts and resting thereon between the said lower edges of the sides 4. With the parts in this position the nuts on the bolts are turned up tightly securing the bit in clamped position between the lower rear margins of the sides. The offset 13 in the bit is of such form that when the body of the bit is clamped in place as explained the teeth on the forward edge of the bit will extend in the plane of the body of the device, and the slots 9 in the sides provide for fixing the bolt 15 in a lower or higher plane so as to have the shaving teeth out deeper or shallower in the ice.

Connected with the rear edge 16 of the forward portion of the bottom 3 is a spring plate 17, of steel, brass, or other suitable metal which is extended from the stub hottom 3 and the rear portion of which rests on top of the teeth 11 and projects to or near to their bases. While the said spring plate is not connected at its sides with the sides of the body of the device, and is erinitted to )lay vertically at its free end etween the iatter sides, it is given no more space than will secure it from binding in place.

The bit, its teeth, and the parts for rendering it adjustable and 006 crating with it are important features of t ie invention, and these as well as other parts may be varied in form and arrangement so long as they aocomplish substantially the same result as is ascribed to them.

In use, with the parts in position as specified the device can be placed on a piece of ice as one would place a carpenters plane to lane a board, but instead of moving it With ong strokes it may be given short jerky strokes which will chi off the ice in fine pieces, which latter wil slide over the teeth of the bit into the hollow body until a sufficient quantity is collected therein, when by the opening of the lid 6, the chipped pieces can be dischar ed for use as desired.

The reason or making the sides inclined as desired is that the chipped ice collected in the hollow body, may not bind or clog in the bottom.

When the points or sharpened edges be come dulled, if such thing should occur, they may be sharpened by the use of a small file.

hat is claimed is In an ice shaver of the character described, the combination with a casing having a stub bottom near its forward end, the rear end terminating a suitable distance above the bottom edge of the casing to form a stop edge, and with perforations in the sides of the casing below said stop edge and a vertioally disposed slot intermediate of its ends, a clamping bolt held within said perforations, a clamping bolt held within said slot, a shaving bit provided with an offset so that its cutting edge occupies a plane nearl coincident with that of its motion, said b0 t engaging the bit at its offset portion to hold the same in place, said bit being carried by said bolts and resting against said stop edge, and a sprin plate extending from said stub bottom and resting upon said bit, as set forth.
