THEODORE E. CLARK, OF "OLEONE, OREGON.
METAL-PUNCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,240, dated May 1,1894.
Application filed August 17,1893. Serial N0. 4833384. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, ITHEODORE E. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residingatOleone, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal-Punches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact. description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.- y
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in metal punches, and has for its object to increase the efficiency of such devices without materially adding to the simple construction usually employed.
With these and other objects in view, the' invention consists of the construction and arrangement of the several parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings :-Figure l is a perspective View of a punch embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section on the line .7c- Fig. '1. Figx is a detail perspective view of the operating handle, yoke and punch removed. Fig. 4E is a detail perspective View of a slightly modified form of punch.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings: The numeral l in the outer part thereof, with a dove-tailed center-plate 2 removably mounted therein, having an opening 3, aligning with a similar opening in the base and in which the punch works. Rising from the rear of the said base 1, is a goose-neck 4 having a front depending head 5 with a vertical opening 6 extending therethrough. The upper opposite sides of said head 5 are provided with ears 7 having slots 8 on the inner opposing surfaces thereof, and the said ears form an entrance slot for the rear eccentric head 9 of an operating handle 10 which is pivotally mounted between the said ears bya removable pin or pivot ll. `Snrrounding the said operating handle 10, adjacent to the head 9 thereof, is ayoke 12, having its upper ends turned over the said head 9, and in which is seated at its lower side, a punch 13, having a flanged head 14 secured removably in the lowerpart of the said yoke.
`changed at any time it may be `terials and the `of the construction will become readily apparent to those using the device and to those `the handle,
The lower end of the punch 13 is shouldered as in constructions of a similar nature and as shown in Fig. 4, the extreme lowerengaging end of said punch may be beveled in order to more conveniently punch large holes. The slots 8 in the ears 7 permit of the mounting and free movement of the yoke between the said ears and in raising the operating handle to elevate the punch carried by the yoke, the upward movement of `said handle is limited by the rear edge of the yoke striking the rear `terminating walls of the slots 8 and thereby serving as a guide to determine when the punch is elevated sufficiently to permit the material to be punched to be placed thereunder. By removing the pin orpivot 1l and elevatingthe handle l0 together with the yoke thereon, the punch can be readily withdrawn from the head 5 and thereby conveniently found necessary. The punch is intended especially for gum ming cross` cut saws and in this latter operation the saw can be gummed in a short space of time without injuring it. It will be understood also that the punch maybe made in any size desirableand out of suitable mavarious manifold advantages skilled in the art.
Having thus described the' invention, what is claimed as new is y In a punch, the combination of abed having a removable center-plate with an opening therein and a goose-neck rising from the rear thereof with a head provided with oppositely disposed slotted ears, a handle having a head eccentrically mounted between said ears, and a yoke mounted onsaid handle and'carrying a punch which extends downwardly through said head, the rear portion of said yoke being adapted to engage the rear parts of the slots in the ears to limit the upward movement of substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribL ing witnesses.
