Be it known that I, WALTER O. REED, a citizen of the United States of America, residin at Beaver, in the county of Beaver and tate of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to wrenches, and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a quick acting wrench that can be easily and quickly adjusted; second, to provide a strong, durable and inexpensive wrench that can be quickly adjusted to engage an object and then minutely adjusted to obtain a positive grip thereon, and threaded to provide a wrench having a gripping bar that can be renewed.
I attain the above objects by a structure that will be presently described and then specifically claimed.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention, the wrench being partly broken away, Fig. 2 is a similar view, partlybroken away and partly in section, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line r-a of Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a shank having a fixed jaw 2. The shank 1 is providedwith a longitudinal recess 3 for a gripping bar or rack 4- having teeth 5, said bar or rack being dotaehably mounted in the recess 3 by rivets 6. Slidably mounted upon the shank 1 is an adjustable jaw 7 havin straps 8 and 9 embracing the shank 1, sai straps being joined by connecting bars 10.
The strap 9 and one of the vertical connecting bars 10 are cut away as at 11 to revide a socket having rounded walls, ant arranged Within said socket is the upper end of a lever 12, said upper end. being rounded so as to conform to the shape of the socket. The said rounded up J01 end of the lever 12 is pivotally connected in the socket through the medium of a pin 13. The lever 12 at a point removed from its pivoted end is cut away or otherwise provided with an opening 14 in which is mounted a worm nut 16 adapted to engage the teeth 5 of the bar or rack 4. The worm nut 16 is rotatably connected to Specification of Letters Patent.

the lever 12 through the medium of a longitudinal pin 15 which extends through the worm nut 16 and engages in the upper end of the lever 12.
Secured to the inner side of the strap 8 by screws 17 or similar fastening means is a spring 18 adapted to engage the shank 1 and normally hold the jaw '7 upon said shank, preventing said jaw from sliding except when manually moved.
With the lever 12 in the position illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the adjustable jaw 7 can be easily moved into engagement with a nut or similar object, and the lever 1.2 swurig into parallel alinement with the shank 1. hen in this position the worm nut 16 engages the teeth 5 of the bar 4 and retains the jaw 7 in engagement with the object, but in order to obtain a positive grip or to place the jaw 7 in positive engagement with the object, the worm nut 16 is rotated, while the lever 12 is held in engagement with the shank 1. When the worm nut 16 is rotated in the proper direction, the adjustable jaw 7 will be further advanced towards the iixed jaw 2, consequently the object will be lirmly gripped.
The shank 1. and the lever 12 can be made of a sufficient length to permit of a suilicient leverage to be obtained by the wrench.
The wrench in its entirety is made of strong and durable metal, and while in the drawings forming a part of this application there is illustrated the preferred embodiments of my invention, I desire it to be understood that the elements therein can be varied or changed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is:
