DRINKING-FOUNTAIN.
No. eoaeev.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 3, 1908.
Application filed March 23, 1907. Serial No. 364,122.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, RicnAnn PARTINGTON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Germans Mills, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Drinking-Fountains, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to drinking fountains for poultry, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a fountain of simple construction in which the water will be fed into a sup 1y chamber outside the tank, said chamber being normally covered and the cover being open when a fowl stands upon a platform at the side of said chamber.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide means for keeping the water chamber closed and ermitting the same to be opened by the weigit of a fowl upon the platform at the side of the chamber.
Still another object is to provide a drinking fountain for poultry of simple construction which will remain closed against contamination from the outside, excepting at such times as the poultry require water.
'lhcse and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a central vertical section taken through a drinking fountain made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the pivoted lever for opening and closing the cover to the water chamber. Fig. 3, is a )erspectivc view of the bracket to which the lover is pivoted. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the platform frame made of a single piece of wire.
Referring to the drawing for a more par ticular dcscription of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a fountain tank, preferably formed of sheet metal, and havin a filling nozzle 2 at its lower end fitted wit a cap 3 which provides a substantially airtight closure for the tank. An outlet opening 4 is provided in one side of the tank near the lower end thereof. A water chamber 5 is fitted to the side of the tank 1, and communicates with the interior of the tank & through the opening 4. An air tube 4 is secured to the tank 1 with its outlet opening disposed near the upper edge of the water chamber 5, said ipe extending upward and terminating insir c the tank near the upper end thereof to support the flow of water into water chamber 5.. The water is the water chamber 5. Extending upward from the bottom of the chamber 5 is a tube 6 in which is loosely mounted a sliding pin or rod 7. A cover 8 is hinged at 9 to the side of the tank 1, said cover closing the top of the water chamber 5.
A bracket 10 is secured to the tank by means of rivetspassing through the openings 11 in the feet 12. Spaced arms 13 are formed on the bracket, said arms being provided with registering apertures :14. A pivoted lever is provided with an opening 15, and a pivot pin 16 is passed through the opening 14 in the arms 13 of the bracket 10, and through the opening 15 in the lever, thus pivoting the same between the bracket arms 13. At the inner end of the lover a concaved boss 17 is provided, and the lower end of the pin or rod 7 is seated in said boss. Downwardly extending lugs 18 are formed on the front end of the lever, said ln s being provided with oppositely dispose openlugs 19.
A platform consisting of a wire frame 20 composed of a length of wire and having a sheet metal plate 21 secured thereto in any suitable manner, is connected to the lever by passing the ends of the wire throu h the openings 19 in the lugs 18, and bending the ends 22 of the frame 2t at right angles to pivot the platform in said lever and to permit the latforrnto be folded up against the front wall of the water chamber 5 to occupy but a small s ace in ship ing. The terminal ends 22 of t to frame 20 ear under the surface of the lever to prevent the platform from swinging downward below the horizontal plane of the lever.
The operation of in Y invention may be briefly described as to lows: The tank 1 is filled by inverting it and removin the ca 3, when water is poured throu h t e nozz e 2 into the tank, then the nozz e 2 is replaced and the tank is set in the position shown in Fig. 1. When a fowl steps upon the platform the lever is thrown upward at the inner end which slides the in or rod 7 in the tube 6, the upper end of said rod bearing upon the inner'wal of the cover 8 and raising said cover to open the water chamber 5 and perrnit the fowl to drink. When the fowl steps off the (platform, the cover 8 closes by gravity, an thus keeps foreign matter frprfii time y ravity through the opening 4 into 1 chamher 5, and will not overflow in said chamber owing to the vacuum in the upper end of the tank 1.
A drinking fountain made in accordance with my invention can be used for Waterin cattle and other animals Without materia alteration in the structure, the parts being of course of the required size for this purpose.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a drinking fountain made in accordance with my invention is of simple construction, can be produced at slight cost, will always provide clear and unpolluted water for the poultry, and is strong, durable and efficient.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
A drinking fountain for poultry comprising a water tank, a water trough secured to the side of the tank and communicating with I the interior of said tank, a cover hinged to the trough for closing the same, a tube extending throu h said trough and terminating near the top t lcreof, a rod mounted to slide freely in said tube and wholly discomlccted from any part of the fountain, a lever provided with a concave boss forming a seat for the lower end of said rod, a platform secured to said lever, said platform comprising a wire frame and a sheet metal plate secured there to, and a bracket to which said oted.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
RICHARD PARTINWFOII.
