ELECTRIC-LIGHT FIXTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 3, 1908.
Application filed February 13, 1908. Serial No. 415,651.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. Gonns'r, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric-Light Fixtures; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawin 's, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention-relates to a novel electric light fixture designed more especially for cluster ceiling lights and the invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the ap pended claims.
Among the objects of the invention is to provide an extremely simple and efiicient fixture for supporting a cluster of electric lamps and to provide a fixture possessing high efliciency which may be. constructed at low cost, and which possesses to a high degree features of attractiveness and ornate design.
In the drawin s:Figure 1 is a partial side elevation. an a partial vertical section of a fixture embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section, taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the socket support. As shown in the drawings, 5 designates the usual supportin stem by which the fix ture is suspended mm the ceiling, and 6 designates a horizontally arranged socket support attached centrally thereof to the lower end of said stein. Said socket support comprises a plain flatplate which is provided with a plurality of angularly separated 0 enings 7, 7 which receive the sockets 8, 8 o the lam s 9. The sockets herein shown embody t e construction illustrated in my prior United States Letters Patent No. 744,330, granted on the 17th day of November, 1903, each comprising a socket body 10 provided with a reduced screwthreaded portion 11, which extends upwardly through an o ening 7 in the socket support and 1s fixe "thereto by a screwthreaded clamping ring 12 which engages saidqscrew-threaded portion of the socket. The stem 5. is herein shown as attached to a hollow crowfootl fitting 14 which has screw-threaded engagement with. the lower end of the stem and is provided with a plurality of lugs or feet 15 to which the socket support is attached, as by means of the screws 16. The conductor wires17 extend from the sockets through said fitting 14 and upwardly into the hollow stem.
18 designates, as a whole, a combined shade and hood, it comprising-an annular, downwardly and outwardly inclined shade or reflector portion 19 and acentral, crownshaped casing or hood 20 which is arranged to inclose the upper side of the socket support, the upper ends of the sockets and the wiring associated therewith. The said combined shade and hood is made of a sin le piece of suitable material, such as porcelain, translucent glass or the like, suitably colored or otherwise treated to produce? the proper shadin or reflecting eflect. The central or hoo to conceal the sockets and wiring inclosed thereby. The said combinedhood or shade is provided centrally with an o ening 21 .for the passage therethrough of tlie stem 5.
The socket support 6 engages at its periphery the inner face of said combined shade and hood'at or near the junction of the shade portion with the hood. Preferably, and as herein shown, the said combined shade and hood is formed on its inner side with an annular recess 22, thus providing a downwardly facing shoulder against which the socket support rests at its peri heral portion, and providing a bearing etween said parts of such width as to hold the combined shade and hood stable relatively to the socket sup ort. Said combined shade and hood is confilied between the peripheral portion of the socket support and a downwardly facing bearing collar 25 which surrounds the stem 5 and bears against. the up er side of the hood portion 20 and is attac led to said stcmby means of a set-screw 26.
The fixture described is exceedingly simale and inexpensive in its construction, and,
eing composed of but few parts, may be readily and economicall assembled and takenapart. Moreover, said fixture is strong and durable and is attractive in appearance.
I claim as my invention 1. An electric lamp fixture comprising a socket support, a stem to the lower end of which the su port is centrally attached and a combined integral shade and hood, the hood being arranged centrally over and covportion is opaque in order a ering the upper side of said support and means for clamping said combined shade and hood against said support.
2. An electric lamp fixture comprising a socket support, a stem attached thereto, a combined integral shade and hood comprising a shade portion extending outwardly beyond the support and a hood portion arranged centrally over and covering the upper side of the support, the hood portion having a central opening through which extends said stem, said support hearing at itspcriphery against the inner side of the combined hood and shade, and means on the stem between which and the support the combined hood and shade is confined.
3. An electric lamp fixture comprising a socket support, a stem attached thereto and a combined integral shade and hood comprising a shade portion extending outwardly beyond the.su port ..and a reduced hood portion arrange centrally over and covering the upper side of the support, the hood portion having an opening through which the stem extends, said combined shade' and hood being provided on itsunder side at the shoulder between the hood and shade with a groove which receives the periphe of said socket support, and means for posl tively locking the supportengaged with the grooved portion of t e combined shade and hood. 4. An electric lamp fixture comprising a socket support, a stem attached centrally hood comprising a shade portion extending outwardly beyond the support, a hood portion arranged centrally over and covering the upper side of the sup ort and provided with a central opening tirough which the stem extends, the support hearing at its pe riphery against the inner side of said combined shade and hood, and a collar surrounding and denc'lmbly fixed to the stem and bearing on the upper side of said hood portion aro nd the central opening thereof.
An electric lamp fixture comprising a perforated socket support, a hollow stem to the lower end of which the support is attached, sockets extending through the perforations of said support and attached thereto, conductorwires attached to the terminals of said sockets and extending up Wardly into the hollow stem, a combined, integral shade and hood, the hood portion of which is located above and covers the upper side of said socket support and said sockets and wiring and means on the stem for confining the combined shadeand holder against the support.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses, this 10th day of ebruary A. D. 1908 JOHN H. GOEHST, Witnesses EDWARD J. Dorm, C. A. CUMMINGS.
