JAMES B. SMITH, OF- LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
METALLIC SECTIONAL BARREL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES B. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los ,Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Metallic Sectional Barrels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more particularly to that class of barrels which are adapted to i hold solid or semi-solid substances such as sugar, potatoes, tar, putty and the like; and it is the prime ob'e t of my invention to produce a metallic l .el which Wlll particularlgl be adapted to hold these classes of goo s.
A further object is to provide a barrel which is stiff laterally.
A further object is to rovide a barrel which is collapsible and easily assembled.
A further object is to rovide a barrel which is indestructible by a l ordinary usage.
A further object is to rovide a barrel which is simple and cheap 1n construction.
I accomplish these objects by means of the device herein described and shown in the accompanying drawings, in whichz- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved barrel. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional perspective of the lower end of the barrel. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of the joint used to connect the sections. s
Referring to the drawin 's the barrel is made up primarily of a plurality of segments, three in this case, 1, 2 and 3, and a head 4:, The segments each have an angleiron 5 riveted to their tops, which serves as a lateral stifl'ener for the barrel besides finishing off the top. Riveted to one of the longitudinal edges of each segment are cover plates 6, on the inside, and 7 on the outside.
hese cover plates project beyond the edges of the segment plates, as shown in Fig. 3 so that the edge of the adjoining segment plate may be inserted between the projecting ends. At the.bottom end of the segments are riveted angle-irons 8 and 9 wlth a space between them so as to provide a space for the bottom head of the barrel. These angles, as seen in Flg. 3,projeet beyond the longitudinal edges of the segment plates and bear agamst the ad acent segment plate, thereby stiffen ng the joint between the two plates materially. Inside cover plate 6 extends from thatop' of angle-iron 8 to th e bottom of anglecron 5. .Outside. cover plate 7 ex- Specification of Letters Patent.

the space between the cover plates on the first segment, and keeping the head between the bottom angle-irons. The third segment is then placed in a manner similar to that in which the second was placed with the exception that it must be joined with the free ed e of the first segment at the same time. he hoops are then laced in position and forced down over t e barrel so as to draw the segments tightly together.
In the foregoing manner I have construct ed a barrel which is tight enough for all solid and semisolid substances, and which is cheap and simple to construct and practically indestructible in use. When dissassembled it lends itself to-easy and cheap transportation, the segments being laid inside of each other making a Hat package.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a sectional barrel, a plurality of side segments, double cover plates secured to one of the vertical edges of each of said segments and adapted to receive between them the free ed e of the adjacent segment, a head for the Barrel, and angle irons secured to the lower ends of said segments ada ted to receive said head between them,
ind said segments 3. In a sectional barrel, a plurality of side segments, means to secure said segments together, and angle irons secured to said segments, said angle irons over-lapping the adjacent segments. a
4.In a sectional bnirel, a plurality of side segments, double outer plates secured to omof th'e vertical edges of ench of said segments and adapted to receive between them the fr ee edge of the adjacent segment, hoops have hereunto subscribed my name this 19th for the barrel, a head for the barrel, and. clay of January, 1907.
angle irons secured to the lower ends of said .egments and adapted to receive said head JAMES SMITH 5 between them, said angle irons over-lapping \Vitnesses:
the adjacent segments. TRIMBLE BARKELEW,
Tn Wil'nPRS that I claim the foregoing l EDMUND A. SPRAUSE.
