GAME PIECE.
APPLIOATION FILED NOV. 20, 1907.

WITNESSES ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FELIX WALLSTEIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
GAME -PIE CE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 27', 1908.
Original application filed April 26, 1907, Serial No. 370,482. Divided and this application filed November 20, 1907. Serial No. 403,010.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FELIX VVALLsrEIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Grame- Piece, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, this being a division of the application for Letters Patent of the United States for a game apparatus, Serial N 0. 370,482, filed by me on April 26, 1907.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved game piece for use in outof-door game apparatus for playing chess, checkers and similar games, and arranged to permit of conveniently moving the piece about over the game board and to securely hold the same in position in a field of the game board when at rest.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Two sets of pieces B are used, one of a light color and the other of a dark color, each set of pieces having a king, queen, two bishops, two knights, two rooks or castles and eight pawns, the figure B representing the values of the pieces, as will be readily understood by reference to Figures 1 and 2, in which a king piece and a knight piece are shown.
In playing the game, the board and the pieces B are made of a large size, the side of a square and the length of a piece being several feet, and the pieces B are placed on the light and dark squares of the board in the usual manner, and the game is played according to the rules prevailing in playing chess, checkers or the like, it being however understood that the players pick up the pieces B in the manner above described, and move the same from one field to another as desired.
For playing the game in the night-time, the pieces B are preferably made of a transparent or translucent material, and the figures B on account of being hollow on the back permit of supporting illuminating devices H in the form of electric lights and batteries, or if desired, lanterns can be used, or the light may be placed on the pieces to illuminate the same.
It is understood that the players themselves can move the pieces from one square to another, or pages may be employed, who under the direction of the players move the pieces to the desired squares.
Figs. 1 and 2 are plan views of two of the pieces of a set used in playing the game, and Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of one of the pieces on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
In the game apparatus above referred to, use is made of a game board made of canvas or other fabric material stretched on the ground or on the floor, and over this game board game pieces B are moved by the players, according to the rules prevailing in playing chess, checkers or similar games.
Each of the game pieces B is preferably made of papier mach, covered wire netting and like material, and each piece B is provided with a Hat back B, preferably of oval shape, and from which ises integrally the embossed figure B representing the character of the piece, each piece being provided at or near the middle with a ring G, adapted to be engaged by a hook at the end' of a stick carried by a player, to permit the latter to readily pick up a piece B, to move the same over the board to another field whenever the game is played.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. Pieces for playing chess, checkers and like games, each piece comprising a raised figure of translucent material and hollow on the under side to receive an illuminating device, a flat back oval in shape and carrying the figure, said back being of a greater size than the figure and extending entirely around the same, and means carried by the figure for engagement by a manually manipulated stick.
2. Pieces for playing chess, checkers and like games, each having a flat back, and a figure raised integrally on the face of the said back and having means for engagement by a manually manipulated stick, the said piece being made of a transparent or translucent material, and hollow on the under side to receive an illuminating device.
3. Pieces for playing chess, checkers and like games, each having a flat back and a figure raised integrally on the face of the said back, and an illuminating device carried by each of the said pieces.
4:. Pieces for playing chess, checkers and like games, each having a flat back, and a figure raised integrally on the face of the said back, the said piece being hollow on the under side and made of a transparent or translucent material, and an illuminating device sustained in the hollow under side of 10 each of the said pieces.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FELIX \VALLSTEIN.
