To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. VVET- iuonn, a citizen of the United States, residing at W'atson, in the county of Lewis and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sleighs; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it app'ertains to make and use same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in sleighs, and the object of the invention is to produce means whereby the runners may have movements independent of each other and of the reach upon which the box of the sleigh is mounted, thereby allowing the runners to conform to irregular tracks without straining the box.
My invention consists in various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in. the appended claim.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of my improved sleigh, a portion being shown in vertical section. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a top plan view.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A and A designate two runners of a sleigh which are connected together by the cross-piece B which has pivotal connections with the ears C which are fixed to the upper edges of the runners near their forward ends.
D designates a bolster having metallic plates D fixed to the opposite edges thereof near their ends and each of said plates is provided with a vertical slot or groove E. The lower edge of each of said plates and also portions of the bolster which rest upon the blocks K which are fastened to the upper edges of the runners are slightly curved, as shown clearly in the sectional view of the drawings, whereby the bolster may have a rocking movement. Rising from said block K are the posts N, the tops of which are fastened to the brace strap 0, the ends of which are fastened at O to said block K and to the runner. Said posts are spaced apart a sufficient distance and adapted to be positioned one in each of said slots or recesses E and are provided for the purpose of allowing the bolster to rock slightly and still be held in place upon the runners. Each end of the bolster is similarly held and each runner, it will be noted by the construction shown, is allowed a movement independent of the other.
I designates a reach, the forward end of which is fastened to the cross-piece B, and brace strips 1 are fastened at their forward ends to the segment bar J and their rear ends secured to the cross-piece R which is fastened to the bolster, and upon which the sleigh box is adapted to rest.
By the construction ofsleigh shown and described, it will be noted that the runners may tilt independent of each other, thereby allowing one runner to go into a depression or over an irregular portion of a track without moving the other, and without any interference with the box.
What I claim is A sleigh comprising runners, a block mounted upon each of the latter, posts rising from said blocks, a truss bar fastened at its ends to each block and having a horizontally disposed and apertured portion through which the upper ends of said posts extend, a bolster recessed upon said opposite vertical faces adjacent to its ends, the inner ends of each recess terminating in shoulders, the up per and lower surfaces of the bolster intermediate the oppositely disposed recessed portions being convexed, a flangeless plate posi tioned in each recess and having its upper and lower edges curved to conform respectively with the convexed surfaces of said bolster, fastening means passing through the plates and adapted to hold the inner ends thereof against said shoulders, each plate having an outwardly projecting portion extending beyond the front and rear faces of the bolster and vertically grooved for the re- In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my ception of said posts, the inner eildges of the signature in the presence of two Witnesses. plate being coneaved and fins with the 1 opposite front and rear faces respectively of CHARLES VETMORE' the bolster, the outer edges of the plates be- \Vitnesses:
