FENCE-POST.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALvIs M. VVEATHERLY, S12, a citizen of the United States, residing at Home, in the county of Floyd and State of Georgia, have invented an Improvement in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention is an improvement on the fence-post, for which I have obtained Letters-Patent of the United States, No. 861,924, dated July 30, 1907.

It was found difficult to produce the post forming the subject of patent, by casting, and I have improved the form and construction of the same, as well as introduced new features, and have succeeded in casting the whole in one piece, or integral.

My improved post is lighter, more durable, and may be manufactured more economically than the original, and is also much more attractive in appearance.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved post as adapted for corners of fences. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the main portion of the post. Fig. 3 is a cross section (enlarged) on the line 33 Fig. 2. Fig. A is a cross section (enlarged) on the line 1 l; of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the lower portion of line-post. Fig. 6 is a similar section of the upper portion of such post. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the upper portion of the line post. Fig. 8 is a cross section on the line 88 of Fig. 7.

I will first describe the post as constructed in Figs. 1, 2, 3. A and B indicate two body parts or members, C the base, and D the cap of my improved corner post. The parts A, B, are separated vertically by a narrow space or slot, and joined integrally by means of webs a. The portion C, which intervenes parts A, B and the base C, is constructed flat and hollow, and with a large open space 00, so that it combines strength and lightness in a high degree. Each of the I body parts or members A, B, is provided with horizontal partitions a, and Z2 respectively, and the two parts are arranged at right angles to each other, so that the pockets or recesses formed by the several partitions are at right angles to each other, and closed at the back, the backs being continuous vertically and cast integrally with the other portions of the body of the post. The post is thus adapted for use at the corners of lots Specification of Letters Patent.

It will be understood that in such case, the stakes or braces are set in the ground at an angle, say 45, one of them being extended alongside the fence on one side of the field, and the other alongside the fence on the adj acent side.

The vertical slots or spaces a between the two parts A, B, serve for passage of wire or other metal strands of metallic fences, and the same may be secured to the post in any convenient manner.

In the line post illustrated in Figs. 58, the two parts or body members A, B, are not arranged at right angles to each other, as in the corner post above described, but back to back, pockets or recesses for reception of boards etc. formed in the body of the fence being in the same vertical plane, and opening in diametrically opposite directions. The base G, and the adjacent base or portion C of the post are constructed as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

The post is cast integrally, or made of malleable iron, and is distinguished by strength, durability, lightness, cheapness, and ornamental appearance.

What I claim is:

1. The improved metallic fence-post comprising a horizontal base, the connected vertical portion C formed hollow, the body portion consisting of two parallel members A and B spaced apart but having webs connecting them at intervals, and each provided with horizontal partitions spaced apart vertically, the two members being provided wit-h backs extending between the said partitions and cast integrally with the post body, the two series of pockets thus formed in the separate members being adapted for reception of ends of boards, and rails opening in different directions, as shown and described.
