BY CAM /3.vLLum/w-' ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
W'ERNER XVINDUS, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
TOY FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 444,681, dated January 13, 1891.
Application filed September 24, 1890. Serial No. 365,942. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it 12mg concern:
Be it known that I, WERNER WINDUs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Fences, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a toy fence made in sections to facilitate taking it down and setting it up.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 shows the fence and gate. Fig. 2 shows a view of the fence-post and foot. Figs. 3 and 4 are cross-sections of the post near the upper and lower ends, respectively. Fig. 5 shows the end of one bar. Fig. 6 shows two views of the end of the other bar.
The panels or sections of the fence comprise two horizontal bars a a and suitable upright rods 7), connecting the two bars. I make this panel in one piece, preferably of cast metal iron or brass. The posts D have attached at their lower end a fiat-bottomed horizontal base-plate e, which will set flat on any level surface, and thereby keep the postupright. The base-plate is provided on two opposite sides with an edge-notch c, with which a screw (1 engages, said screw entering a block a on a board or other suitable support. The post has on its side a double hook f and an ear g, of peculiar construction. The double hook comprises a short arm f, having two upwardprojecting hooks f, with a space f between them. The ear comprises a lug having the ear-hole g in a vertical direction and a slot at the upper side. The post, base-plate, and
side ears comprise one integral piece made of cast metal.
The upper one of the horizontal panel-bars a has at its ends two side notches 7b, which give the end a T-shaped form 71'. (See Fig. 5.) This end fits onto the double hook f. The other panel-bar a has at its end a beak-hook "J, the point of the hook pointing downward. (See Figsl and 6.) The outer vertical side of this hook is beveled, as at i. This hook takes into the side slot 9 and its point projects down into the ear-hole 9. By this arrangement a panel is attached to the post as follows: The panel-bar a, having the T-shaped end h, is first engaged with the double hook f on the post, and then the beveled side of the hook i on the end of the other, panel-bar a is brought against the side slot g of the ear 9. (See Fig.1.) By now moving the opposite end of the entire panel the T-shaped end h on the bar that is engaged with the double hook f, as above stated, will act as a pivotconnection, and thereby the bevel-hook i of the other bar a will slide up on the ear 9 and allow the point of the hook to enter the earhole g.
The gate J in this instance is a double gate that is, it opens at the middle and turns both ways.
Having described my invention, I claim- A toy fence comprising posts D, each having attached at its lower end a flat-bottomed base-plate e to hold the post upright, and provided on its side with a double hookf and an ear g, and panels having two horizontal bars, one of which has T-shaped ends h to engage with the double hook and the other has its ends provided with a hook having a beveled outer side i to engage with the ear, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WERNER WINDUS.
