EXTENSION-TABLE SLIDE.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ORRIN G. FRANKs, a citizen of the YUnited States, residing Vat Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Extension-Table Slides, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a slide for extension-tables in which the several parts or sections thereof are constructed of sheet metal in such manner as to produce a strong, durable and easy running device of this character, which is also light in construction and may be cheaply manufactured.
In carrying out my invention the slide is made up of three parts or sections all formed of sheet metal plates which are bent or sha ded to provide interlocking rail portions an reinforcing brace members, whereby the slidable end sections will be firmly and securely connected to the center section and have a direct longitudinal movement thereon, all as hereinafter fully described and specifically set forth in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this s ecification-Figure l is a view illustrating t ie application of my improved slide to the top sections of an extension-table. Fig. 2 is an enlarged inverted plan view of the slide. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the slide. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view through the several parts of the slide. I Fig. 5 is asectional view illustrating a detail of the invention hereinafter referred to.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In carrying out my invention the center section l0 of the slide is formed of a plate or strip of sheet metal which is bent upon itself along its opposite longitudinal edges to provide rail portions Il of inverted U-shape in cross-section, the free member of each rail portion being disposed inwardly or towards the body of the section and terminates a slight distance above the upper surface of the latter, (see Fig. 4) to receive a correspondingly shaped rail-portion on the end sections, hereinafter described. The longitudinal center of this section 10 is provided with a raised portion or rib 12, struck therefrom and adapted in the present instance as a guiderail interposed between the slidable end sections, and the distance between this guiderail and each rail portion l1 corresponds eX- Specication of Letters Patent.

actly with the width of the end sections. Each end section 13 of the slide is also formed from a plate or strip of sheet metal one longitudinal edge of which is bent upon itself to form a rail portion 14 of U-shape in cross-section, with the free member disposed outwardly or away from the body of said section, so that said rail-portion linay have an interlocking slidable engagement with one of the rail portions ll of the center section and the body of the end section overlie the center section. The opposite longitudinal edge of each end section is bent downwardly at right angles to provide a reinforcing brace-member or straight rail l5, the lower edge of which latter bears upon the center section alongside of the guide-rail l2. The rail- portions 11 and 14 are of such relative size as to fit closely together, but without undue friction, and so that the upper edge of the rail portion of the center section will be substantially flush with the upper surface of the end section, as shown in Fig. 4.
It will be noted that the end sections of the slide have a wide firm bearing on the center section at the two points o and l), and that the interlocking rail-portions in conjunction with the center guide-rail serve to prevent lateral movement of the parts or sections upon each other. In this manner the bearing surfaces of the end sections upon the center section are reduced to a minimum, and consequently the friction of the parts correspondingly reduced; thereby providing a table slide that will run easily and will be properly braced.
The outer end of each end section of the slide is preferably raised slightly, as shown at 16, so that the inner edge of the table top to which it is attached will be disposed above s the slide and therefore not liable to catch thereon when the sections of the table are moved towards each other or closed. The raised portions 16 of the end sections 13 are provided with screw holes, as shown, for the i attachment of said sections.
In order to limit the sliding movement of the sections of the slide upon each other, the section 10 is provided near its opposite ends with stops 17, which are adapted to co-act with stops 1S near the inner ends of the end sections when the latter are moved in either direction, and in the present instance the stops on the center section are located adjoining the guide-rail 12 and the co-acting stops on the end sections are formed on the depending brace members or straight rails 15, being preferably struck therefrom, as shown in Fig. 5. ln the present instance also the stops 17 are provided by additional plates 19 secured to the underside of the center section 10 by means of rivets 20, said stops being struck from said plates and eX- tend upwardly through recesses or slots therefor in said center section, as shown in Fig. 4.
The application and operation of my improved extension-table slide are practically the same as that of the ordinary table slide of this general character, and therefore will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In an extension-table slide, the combination, of a center section having longitudinal rail portions, and end sections each having a rail portion interlocking with one of the rail-portions of the center section and a straight rail bearing on said center section.
2. In an extension-table slide, the combination, of a center section having longitudinal rail portions, and end sections having opposite rails bearing upon the center section and one of said rails shaped to interlock with a rail portion of said center section.
3. ln an extension-table slide, the combination, of a center section having longitudinal rail portions, and end sections each having rails along its longitudinal edges bearing 'upon the center section, one of the rails of the end section being in interlocking slidable engagement with one of the rail portions of the center section.
4. In an extension-table slide, the combination, of a center section having longitudinal rail portions and an intermediate guiderail, and end sections each having longitudinal rails spaced apart and bearing upon the center section, one of the rails of the end section interlocking with a rail-portion of the center section and the other rail of said end section bearing alongside the aforesaid guide-rail.
5. ln an extension-table slide, the combination, of a center section having inverted U-shaped rail portions along its longitudinal edges, and end sections each having longitudinal rails spaced apart and bearing upon the center section7 one of said rails on the end section being U-shaped in cross-section for interlocking slidable engagement with the corresponding rail portion of the center section.
6. In an extension-table slide, the combination, of a center section having inverted U-shaped rail portions along its longitudinal edges and an intermediate guide-rail, and end sections each having longitudinal rails spaced apart and bearing upon the center section, one of said rails on the end section being U-shaped in cross-section for interlocking slidable engagement with the corresponding rail portion of the center section and the other rail bearing on the center section alongside the aforesaid guide-rail.
7. ln an extension-table slide, the combination, of a center section made of sheet metal bent along its longitudinal edges to form inverted U-shaped rail portions and struck up along its longitudinal center to form a guide-rail, and end sections each bent upon itself along its longitudinal edges to form a U-shaped rail portion at one edge and a straight rail at the other edge, the former being adapted for interlocking slidable engagement with the corresponding rail portion of the center section and the` latter adapted to bearupon said center section alongside the guide-rail.
8. In an extension-table slide, the combination, of a center section having inverted U-shaped rail portions along its longitudinal edges and an intermediate guide-rail, end sections each having longitudinal rails spaced apart and bearing upon .the center section, one of said rails on the end section being U- shaped in cross-section for interlocking slidable engagement with the corresponding rail portion of the center section, and the other rail bearing on the .center section alongside the aforesaid guide-rail and having a stop struck therefrom, and plates secured to the center section and having stops struck therefrom and adapted to co-act with the stops in the end sections of the slide.
