SPARK-PLUG a'r'mcmmirr.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 27, 1908.
Application filed July 25, 1907. Serial No. 885,457.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK D. CASEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of North Water Gap, in the county of Monroe and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Spark-Plug Attachment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to spark plug attachments and more particularly to those which are used in connection with the en gines of motor boats and vehicles, and it is eiiicient in operation and inexpensive-t0 manufacture.
The object of this invention is to rovide covers for the spark plugs of engines, to prevent water or moisture from reaching the electrical connections on the spark plugs and thereby causing a short circuit.
A; further object is to prevent the possibility of electrical shocks and to lengthen the life of the spark plug by protecting it from moisture and other injurious substances.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully Before proceeding to a more detailed explanation of my invention, it should be understood that water or other moisture frequently collects on the spark plugs of an engine, especially those engines which are used in motor vehicles or boats. This is very apt to cause a short circuit and interfere with the proper operation of the engine.
To provide a spark plug cover of eificient form and simple construction and .at .the same time capable of obviating all danger of short circuits, I provide a dome-shaped casing having a detachable base which is adapted to be suitably supported in position at a s ark plug.
Re erring more particularly to the drawings, 3 represents the spark plug casing, which is preferabl fashioned from metal or other similar suita le material. I provide a detachable base 6 of suitable material, such asbrass, or other metal, and approximating in shape the cross sectional form of the easing. The latter is firmly arranged upon the base, the rim of the casing peripherally engaging the base and being held in position by frictional engagement therewith.
The spark plug is provided with the usual stem 1, which together with the collars 4, and a thumb nut 2, constitutes a binding post, by means of which a conductor 5 is detachably connected with the spark plug. The conductor 5 enters the casing through an aperture 10. This aperture may be either in the casing or in the base, whichever is the more convenient for use. The base 6, has a'threaded opening by means of which it can be removably mounted upon the correspondingly threaded base 7 of the spark plug. Although as shown in the accompanying drawings, this base 6 is supported on the threaded base 7 of the spark plug, other suitable means for supporting the base 6, may be employed. For; example, the base 6 inlay be, formed integral with the spark It will be understood that my invention can be used in connection with spark plugs of different types, and'that the form of the spark plug is not an essential feature of the device. The underlying principle consists in providin a suitable casing for protecting the spark p ug from moisture or other for- ,eign substances liable to interfere with the' operation thereof, and suitable means for arranging the casing at a spark plug. The
casing may be dome or globular-shaped,
though the specific form is not essential to my invention.
. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
The combination with a spark plug, of a disk detachably connected therewith, and a cover for the plug, the ed e of the cover frictionally engaging the e go of the disk, whereby to retain said cover in place, said cover having an opening to permit the passage of a 'conductor. v
In testimony whereof I have signed'my name to this-specification in the presence of two subscribing 'witnessesL p FREDERICK DfiOASEY. Witnesses:'-.
WILLIAM A. SHAFER,
JAMES
