UNITED vsures ALIFONZO c. CASTILLO, orsoconno, MExicof srAnK PLUG. I 1
Application filed December 3, 1921. Serial N'o. 519,741.
To all whom it may, concern:
Be it known that 'I, Anronzo C. CASTILLO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Socorro, in the county of Socorro and State of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements. in Spark Plugs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in spark plugs and has for its primary object to provide an improved device of this character wherein mechanism is provided for preventing the collection of carbon and other deposits between the points of electrodes, retaining the same clean and bright at all times.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for keeping the plug oilproof, thereby preventing the collection of carbon or other deposits thereon.
Still another object of the invention resides in the provision of means for retaining the electrodes in permanent position, thereby providing a set spark and proper adj ustment for a sure spark at all times.
lVith these and other objects in view my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device constructed in accordance with my invention,
Figure 2 is a vertical section thercthrough showing the insulating block in elevation,
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view, and
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view showing the lower electrode.
In describing the invention I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 designates the body of the plug and is provided with external screw threads 2 for the lower portion of its length,- whereby it may be readily screwed into the cylinder of an engine, the remainding portions of the body being of a formation 3 to be readily engaged by a ratch or other instrument.
The interior of the body is shaped to readily receive therein, as usual, an insulating block 4 through which extends permanently an electrode 5, the outer end of which forms a spark point 6, While the upper end thereof is threaded to be engaged by a binding nut 7, whereby the terminal of a connecting wire or any other desired connection may be engaged therewith.
Interposed between a nut- 8 is a copper washer 7 and a steel lock washer 7* for the purpose of providing a tight connection when the electrode extends beyond the in- 1sulaicing block at, and prevents leakage of any nnc.
Surrounding the insulating block 4 and engaged with the interior threads of the body 1 is a lock nut 9, the lower peripheral edge of which is beveled to engage a gasket 10 which rests on the beveled portion 11 of the shoulder 12 formed on the insulating block 4:. Another gasket 13 rests on the interior shoulder 141 of the body 1 so that the shoulder 12 of the insulating block 4: rests upon said gasket 13, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of t-he'drawings.
tween the body, the insulating block and the lock nut, thus prevent-ing oil and other foreign matter from accumulating on the upper portion of the plug.
A second elect-rode in the form of a plate or disc illustrated in the drawings as 15 is provided, the same being formed on its sides with two upstanding projections at 16, the latter being formed integral with the plate or disc- 15 and to tit in recesses or the like in the lower reduced portion of the shell or body 1, as clearly shown in Fig. 1- of the drawings. Thus this lower electrode 15 completely covers the area of the bore of the shell 1 but portions of the same are deflected downwardly from opposite sides, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings.
This plug may be made any size for application to any character of motor and it will be seen that-the same will be oilproof and will prevent the depositing of carbon on the terminals.
It will further be seen that I have provided simple, inexpensive and efiicient means for carrying out the objects of the invention and while I have particularly described the elements best adapted to form the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing anyof the principles of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is Thus through this construction, it. will be seen that a tight fit may be had b'e-' A spark plug of the class described coniprising a shell, an insulating block supported therein, an electrodeextending centrally through said insulating block and terminating in a plane slightly below the plane of the lower edge of said shell, said shell being provided at diametrically opposite points on its outer periphery with recesses extending upwardly from the lower edge thereof, an additional electrode of disc-like formation designed substantially rectangular in plan and provided at diametrically opposite points thereon with integral upstanding arms fitting and secured in the recesses in the lower portion of said shell, said disc-like electrode being spaced below the termination of said first mentioned electrode'and being of an area to entirely cover the lower end of said shell, the oppositely opposedend portions of said disc-like electrode between the projections thereof being deflected downwardly, as and :for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I aflixmy signature.
ALFONZOC. CASTILLO.
