' W. N. BEBCHER. WIND SHIELD FOR VEHIGLEJS. APPLICATION PILBD 11mm. 1908.

UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIcE."
WALTER N. BEECHER, OF CHICAGO; ILLINOIS.
Application led January 13, 1908.
v To all utom it may concern:
Be it known that I. 'ALTER N. Bereiten, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago. in the county of Cook and State of Illinois. have invented 'certain new and useful Improvements in IVind-Shields .for Vehicles. of which the following is a full. clear. and exact description.
My invention relates to wind-shields for vehicles. such. for example. as automobiles. and its object is to provide a divided or split wind-shield consisting of an upper and a lower sash the former being preferably hinged to the latter so that .it can bev lowered in front of sired. v i
Another object is to provide suitable means for preventing the accidental lowering ofthe upper-sash owing to the loosening of the clamping-bolt. as is sometimes the same when so` de cauedby the vibration ofthe vehicle on rough roads.
This I accomplish in the manner hereinafter full5v described and as more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings :-'-Figure 1" is a side eleration of alfragmental portion ofthe for ward end of an automobile showing my improved windshield attached thereto; Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail -of the adjusting bracket used in connection therewith. Fig.
. is a transverse horizontal section thereof taken on dotted line 3-3. Fig. 2 looking in the direct-ion indicated by the arrows, and
`glass.
Fig. l a detached perspective View ofthe hinge and the pivoted bolt employed in connection therewith.
' Referring to the drawings., represents` the bonnet or hood, surrounding and inclos'- ing the engine or other motive power for propellingthe vehicle, and which is usually supported on the forward ends of the side-v sills Q ofthe vehicle.V Suitably fitted on the Arear end of the bonnet and extending above the same a short distance is the lowersectionv 3' of a wind-shield that comprises a frame-work. preferablj1 lmade of metal or w ood 'surrounding a rectangular plate of An' upper section 4 comprising a me inclosing glass of approximately the ysame proportions as that in the lower sash I l and is securedpalong its lower-edge to the upper edite of said lower section'by means of suitable hinge-plates 5. 5.
" Secured to theuupper portionofthe Stilesof the lowergsection' and, preferably, ex-
specifieation of Letten; Patent'.

Serial No. 410,605.
tendinghalf. abone and half below the hori-` -zontal dividing hue between the sections 3 and l. are two correspendingsubstantiallyv parallel with the curved edges thereof, and
this slot extends acrossthe vertical portion of the bracket and into the angular supporting-plate where it meets n recess-1T cut in the edge of said supporting-plate. At' a suitable point this semi-circular portion T is provided'with a forwardhT and downwardly projecting screw-threaded stud `9 onto which the brace-rod 10 is screwed. The forward and lower end of this brace is secured to the forward ends of the side-sills? of the body by bolts or rivets. substantially as shown.
' The backs of the upper plates of the hinges are each'provided with a pairA of laterally` projecting parallel pivot lugs l1. 1 1. that extend horizontally to the rear thereof. and.' fit into a recess or niche 1Q 'cut in the lower side edges of the stiles of the upper sash.` Ak screw-threaded locking bolt 13 having its inner endV provided with an enlar ed head l-lv IW means of is secured between these lugs 11. a pintle 15. which is'tapped throughsa 1d parts so that said bolt can be swung on' ltsv 4pivot in a plane transverse to said sash.
This bolt is soA arranged that its outer end racket, and has a hand-nut- 16 screwed thereprojects through the segmental slot 8 lin the on in order that. when the upper sash is being swung down. said bolt moves in thel segmental slot until it reaches-the' lower end thereof. whereupon if the' hand-'nut is-.then' tightened, said upper sash will be locked'in desired to raise the vwind-shield to itswfull'` .its lowered position. When, however, it ia` height the hand-nut is loosened and theupj per sash is swung upward causing the bolt to more in" the segmental slot. until theframe of the `upper sash abuts against the 'supporting-plate of the uperportion of the bracket. 'I
The bolt is then swung on its pintle around i i -the corner of'said bracket in which position its *shankl will enter the recess 17, whereupon vby tightening the hand-nut :16, the vupper sash will' locked to the lower sash in theA raised position. This so firmly locks Athe upper sash that it wlll prevent 1t from accident'- ally falling forward even though saidliand A nut should become, loosened by. the vibration 'of the vehicle, and will prevent it from lowf ering'until the bolt is swung on'its pivot.. around the corner of the bracket into 'the se mental slot again.
z hat I claim as new is 'l-.vA'W-indsh1eld for vehicles comprising a stationary lower sash and a movable upper vsashv hinged thereto, a bracket secured to and projecting above the top edge of the .lower-sash and provided with a. transverse recess near the upper end of its vertical'poi t1on, and a swinging pivcted bolt secured tosaid upper sash and adapted to engage 'said recess and lock said upper sash 'in its 420 adjusted position.
