Specification of Letters Patent.
- Application filed May 20, 1918. Seriai No. 235,518.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ENDRE PAPP, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at New York, county of New York, andState of New York, and I, PAUL NAGY, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Auto Wind-Shields, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wind shields, and has as its special object the provision of means whereby a composite, transparent-shield is provided so that the operator of the vehicle may obtain a full and complete outlook, irrespective-of weather condition.
A further object is to provide means whereby the upper portion of'the transparent shield may be raised or lowered in a convenient manner, thereby admitting air to the vehicle,
Another object is to provide means whereby the upper sections of the shield maybe held at any desired angle in a positive manner, the ad ustment being made from the interior of the vehicle.
These and other like objects are attained of parts hereinafter described andshown in Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing a conventional type of automobile, parts being broken away in order to disclose the shield attachment, one of the sections of which is in an open position.

Engaged, by hinged connections 17 is an upper transparent plate 18, adapted, when in a closed or lowered position, to completely fill the space between the'roof and the upper edge of the fixed plate 15. A third or cover plate 20 is also secured by the hinged connection 17, and adapted, when in'a lowered position, to fold over and extend slightlybeyond the joint between the plates 15 and 18, thus in combination with the side pane or plate 21, the front edge of which is engaged with the frame 14, forming a complete covering for the vehicle front.
Extending rearwardly into the vehicle and firmly engaged with the side frames 14, are brackets 24 from which extend rearwardly' projecting lugs 25 and 26-, the formerhavin narrow raised projections 27 upon its upper surface and containing a screw-threaded opening 28 receptive of a screw 29, the shank 30 of which extends out wardly and is furnished with a knurled operating knob or head 31. by the novel construction and combination- Engaged below the upper lug 25 is a. spring plate 33 through which is formed a transverse groove 34, acting as a weakening cut, the plate being attached to the lug 25 bythe screws 35. Attached to the inner surface, at the margins of the transparent plates 18, are brackets 48, having extending shanks 49, secured to curved bars 50 which pass below the spring plate 33 in contact with the lower extending lug 26. These curved bars extend outward through the slot 40 in the cap 38,
and may obviously be clamped in an ad- I justed position by manipulating the knurled head 31, the point of the screw pressing against the spring plate,- forcing the bar 50 against the projection 26.
Similarly, the outer transparent plate 20 has secured to it brackets 52 having extending arms 53, pivotally engaged by the screws 54, with other arcuately bent bars 55 whichpass below the brackets 26 and are'engagedby the inturned flanged element 56 of the cap 88, so that when the knob 45 is manipulated, the cap element 56 is forced firmly against the outer surface of the bar 55, clamping it against the projection 26.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that either the inner or outer transparent plates 18 or 20 may be raised or lowered and positively clamped in position, the movement of the bent bars being limited by projections 57 and 58, extending respectively from the ends of the bars 50 and 55. Thus when it is desired to provide ventilation, both of the up per transparent plates or covers may be raised and clamped in a desired adjustment by manipulating the knobs 31 and 45, or in case of a storm, .the inner plate 18 may be maintained in a closed position, while the upper, outer plate 20 can be clamped in an- 'gular adjustment so as to divert rain, snow, 1 etc.,-from strlkinv the inner plate, each of the plates being independently operable by proper manipulation of the extending knobs.
