WIRE-STRETCHER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PERRY L. BROOKS, a

citizen of the United States, residing in the county of Washington and State of Kansas, have-invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Stretchers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to wire stretchers particularly adapted in the construction of wire fences, and has for its object to provide a simple, cheap, effective, and a convenient device of this character to facilitate the con struction of wire fences.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in the speciiic structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure l is a top plan view of the present invention showing the position of the parts before stretching of the wire, Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the position of the parts after the wire has been stretched, Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1, Fig. 5 is a front elevational view.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, there is shown a wire stretcher 10 comprising an arcuate member 11 having an enlarged head 12, at one end. The head 12 is provided upon its outer face with a vertically disposed concavity 13 arranged to straddle a fence post as shown at Ain Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. The member -11 opposite the head 12 is bent to form a handle 14.

Pivoted as shown at 15 to the arcuate member 11 there is shown a lever 16 arranged for horizontal movement, and this lever has a portion disposed in a horizontally extending slot 17 formed in a cross bar 18 connected at its ends to the arcuate member 11 and to the head 12. Inwardly of the cross bar 18, the lever is provided with a vertically disposed roller 19.

Pivoted as shown at 20 there is shown a gripping lever 21, and this lever is thus arranged to lie at times in parallel relation to the lever 16. Inwardly of the cross bar. 18 the lever 21 is bent to form an inwardly directed portion 22, and this portion at its outer end is provided with a vertically dis'- posed roller 23 arranged for clamping engafrement at times with the roller 19.

Iivoted dogs 24 and 25 rpectively are carried by the head 12' arranged for coengagement with each other by coil springs 26, as shown. The outward movement of these dogs is limited by stops 27 carried by the head 12.

The arcuate member 11 is rovided with a hook 2S located inwardly o the handle 14 and arranged to receive the free end of a wire to be stretched whereby the wire may be held away from the operator.

In use, the head 12 is engaged with the post A, and a fence wire B is disposed between the dogs 24 and 25 respectively, and inwardly of the dogs the wire is engaged between the rollers 19 and 23 res ectively and the levers 16 and 21 res ectively are tightly clamped together whereliy the wire B is frictionally engaged between the rollers and it will be seen that a movement of the levers 16 and 21 respectivel toward the handle 14 will move the wire therewith to tighten the same. The arrangement of the dogs 24 and 25 respectively is such that these dogs firmly engage the wire until the levers 16 and 21 are brought into action.

What is claimed is:

1. A wire stretcher comprising an arcuate member having a forked post engaging head at one end, an arcuate slotted bar connecting said arcuate member and said head respectively, a pivoted lever carried by said arcuate member and disposed for movement in the slotted portion of said bar, a vertically disposed roller carried by said lever, a lever pivotally connected to the iirst named lever, a roller carried by said last named lever for frictionally engaging the first named roller, and wire clam ing dogs carried by said head and arranged or disengagement with a wire upon operation of said first named lever.
