Description
` To all 'who/mit 'mary concern:
- l tied.
`cord is' of thick material,
@atwtdtjijiira CHARLESReORGASiQF RoUGHsBURG, OHIO.
Leaf/'rs 'Parent No. 90,166, dated Magie, 1869.
IMPROVE!) PESSARY.
`The Schedule referred to in these Lettera Patent andrmaking part of the same.
y Y Be itknown that I, CHARLES R. GoRGAs, of Roughsburg, Ashland county,- Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements upon the Pessary` patented by me, July 21, 1868, and I dohereby declare thefollowing is a full, clear,'and exact description thereof, reference, being had to the accompanying drawings y `making partof this specification.
The nature of my inv'ention relates to improvements in apparatus for the cure `of Prolapsus fitter-i, whereby it is designed to provide au improved pessary, which `can be` easily inserted, and worn by the patient without-annoyance.
It consists of an Indiafrubber bag, of acertain form,
l the neck of which is extended into a tube; also in a .cannula and inlating-tube, by means of which the" rubber bag is inserted in the vagina, inflated and se# cured.
To enable vothers skilled in the art to make andf use l i my invention', I will proceed to describe its construc- `tion andoperation. y
Figure l is an edge view of the pessary, before in- Figure 2is a side vie-w of thesame. Figure `3 is a section through thecannula, showing the pessary-insid'e.v`
Figure 4 is asection throughthe inating-tube.
Figure 5 shows the pessarybeing inflated by the ntlating-tube. l'
Figure 6 shows thc pessary inflated andthe tube A represents form,'and with the neck elongated into a tube, B,.
about one-quarter of an inch in diameter, and fteen inches long. The cord is-of thin material, sothat l, when tied in a knot, the sides are so compressed as to prevent'the escape of air; this is not the casegif the The end of the tube terminates in a funnel-shaped mouth, c,\fo`r inlating-purposes.
D represents a section4 through` the cannula this is of hard rubber or ivory, open at each end, and large enough to contain the pessary whenit is folded up;
theindia-rubber pessary, of" thin ma@ terial. It is shaped like an inverted bottle, conical in It is preferable to make this cannula 4with a flange on the lower end, as shown by the red lines d',
tapered to it into the end c of the cord. rlhe other end, e2, which is larger, is used for pushing the pessary outof the cannula into the vagina, and
is also used as a mouth-piece when inflating the pes-- sary. I also use, for inflating-purposes, the common elastic rubber-female syringe.
The operation and mode of inserting the pessary are Y l in this manner: i The pessary, in its placed in the cannula D, as shown in fig. 3.v
f The cannula is then inserted in the vagina, andthe large end, e2, of the in`ating-,tube, is now appliedto force thelpessary 'out of the top end of the cannula. l
'lhe tube E is iow inserted into the end of the cord c, as shown in fig. 5, and the pessary inflated from the lungs, or by the female syringe before mentioned. As l this is being done, the cannula is gradually withdrawn,
leaving the pessary inflated in the vagina againstthe neck of the, womb.
The ,cord or tube B is now nipped between the thumband finger', whilst V.the end is being tiedV in a n knot, G, to secure the air within,-or it may be tied with a tape, and the operation is completed.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure kby Letters Patent, is`
l. The intlatin'g rubber pessary having a conical" `pear-shaped body, A, cord B, and funnel-mouth, G,
substantially as shown anddescribed.
2. The harderubber cannula D for introducing the pessary into the vagina, constructed as shown and described. y
.-3. The hollow stem E, answering the `twofold purpose of introducing and inatingthe pessary, substalm o. R'. GoneAs.
tially as shown and described.`
