A TTORNEYS SANFORD ARGHIBALD WINSOR, OF CHIGAGO, ILLINOIS DEVICE FOR APPLYING MEDICAMENTK Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 9, 1907.
Application filed April 10,1906. Serial No. 310,914. 7
To all whom: 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, SANFORD ARCHIBALD WrNson, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago,
'in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have incation of medicated selves or ointmcnts to the skin of the body or to the scalp, and is especially useful as a comb wherewith an ointment for the cure of dandruff may be applied to the head.
. The object of the invention is to provide a simple, efficient and inexpensive device to be used for applying salves or ointments, and with which the medicament may be thoroughly and evenly distributed upon and rubbed into the cuticle, while at the same time the affected surface is beneficially acted upon by the friction of the operation, of advantage, for instance, in the cure of dandruff or kindred diseases.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts which will beset forth hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings which indicate, as an example, the preferred embodiment of my invention, in which drawings similar characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a partial longitudinal section, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device with a partrcmoved and Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross section of a part of the comb showing the threaded connection between the hollow teeth and the tube.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 provide a handle, consisting of a flat lower bar 1, preferably of vulcanized rubber, and a movable upper bar 2, which may he of the same material as the lower bar or may be of wood. The two bars are joined at one end of the handle by a shackle 3 which permits their free rclative movement. The other end of the iowcr bar is turned upwards at right angles presenting an extension 4. This extension 4 is provided with a threaded opening to receive the correspondingly threaded end 5 of a tube 6, which is closed at the other extremity. and is prcfcrabl y of vulcanized rubber. This tube (5 is provided with a series of threaded openings on its lowcr side which rcccive hollow teeth 7, that communicabwith the interior of the tube 6.
The end 5 of the tube 6 is interioriy threaded and thus adapted to receive a threaded nipple 8 of a bulb or tube 9, which contains the salve or ointment. The bulb 9 is preferably of the usual tube of soft metal for substances of this character, and from which the contents may be dispensed by applying pressure, which forces the salve through the mouth-piece. The tube.
9 is'placcd between the two bars 1 and 2, the lower bar 1 being provided with an outward curvc near its upward extension in order to accommmlalc the head of the tube 9. i
By gripping the handle and prcssing the bars 1 and 2 together the salve is forced through thehnouth-piecc into the tube 6 and out through the hollow teeth 7, by means of which it can be applied to the epidermis. lt will be understood that the shackle 3, bcing at the remote extremity of the handle. permits the two bars to taper in this direction. and thereby it is possible to apply the pressure to the tube 9 cniircly in the dircc= tion of the lube 6. V
By making the device adaptable to receive tubes of standard sizes the latter can without difiiculty be unscrewed. removedand replaced by others when thc contents has been used up.
It is understood that the salve tube need not be oi the type shown. but may, for instance. be a rubber bulb I adapted to be refilled from time to time as rcquircd. It will be seen that this device is of great simplicity, convenient in operation. and is easily kcpt in a clean and sanitary condition. for it may be scpnrntcd'inlo ii: various parts by the mere unscrewingof ibc lnttcr.
Having thus described my prcfcrrcd form of my in- Letters Patent is:
1, A device for applying medlcamcnts comprising :1 tube having hollow teeth and a threndcd cud. u bundle hnvina a bar provided with a laterally disposed end having a threaded opening adapted to be mounted upon said threaded end of said tube. :1 meinher hinged to sub] bar at the ends-emote from said Qhhe, and a bulb between said hnr and said member and in communicntion with said tube. said bur having an oulwurd curve adapted to receive the shoulder of said bulb. sold bulb helm: ndnptcd to be pressed between said bar and member.
2. Axlcvicc for applying'mcdicnmeuts comprising a tube having hollow teeth and an end internally and externally threaded. a bundle havln a bar provided with a Ian-rollidisposed end having a threaded oponinp: adapted to be mounted upon said threaded end of said tube, u nn-mhcr hinged to said huiu'nnd a bulb between said bur and said member. said bulb having: a threaded cnd adapted to be secured within the threaded end of said tuhe..snid bar having an outwardly curved portion adjacent to said intcrnlly disposed end adapted to receive the bend of said bulb. said bulb bcing'ndnplcd to be pressed between said bu r und said member.
in testimony whcrcof I have signed my name in this specification in the presence of twmsuhscribing witnesses.
