UN T D STATES PATENT- JOSEPH BENSON HILL, OF OVID, MICHIGAN.
APPLICATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters'Patent NO. 652,848, dated July 3, 1900. Application filed July 11,1898. Serial No. 685,643. (Model) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JosnPH BENSON, I-IILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ovid, in the county of Clinton and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Medical Applicators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to medical applicators of that class particularly adapted for the introduction in and application of medicaments to the rectum, vagina, and also to other internal parts of the human body; and the object in view is to provide asimple and effect ive device of this character that will render more positive the application of various medicines to different organisms of the human anatomy without loss of the-same before a full entrance has been eifected and with a more beneficial result.
Other objectsand advantages will be set forth in the subjoined description and the novel features hereinafter claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the tube. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the stem or shaft. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the two parts united in operative relation. Fig. 4. is a longitudinal sectional view through the tube, showing the longitudinal depression in one extremity of the stem or shaft. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 with the stem or shaft reversed and showing the inclosed extremity of the latter partially in section.
The applicator comprises a tube A and a stem or shaft B, the tube being provided with an inner bell end A and a front rounded terminal A and also formed with a bore therethrough of equal diameter throughout its length except at the said inner bell end. The stem or shaft B has one end smoothly rounded, as at O, and the opposite end formed with a conical recess F, from the apex of which a diagonal or .oblique aperture E leads out through the stem inward from the adjacent end, and from the said aperture to the latter end a groove e is provided. Near the opposite rounded end 0 the said stem is constructed with an elongated longitudinal depression or concavity G to hold either liquid or dry medicaments and is the essential feature of vthe improvement.
The method of using the improved device is as follows: The end 0 of the stem or shaft is pushed out of the tube A far enough to expose the depression G, which is filled with the medicine to be applied, and the tube is again pushed over the saiddepression, thus producing a closed chamber. The instrument is then introduced, and when the depression or chamber is opposite the point where it is desired to apply the medicine the tube is drawn back and the contents of the depression are set free directly opposite and on thepart to be treated. If it is desired to introduce a tompion, the stem or shaft is reversed in the tube and the latter is drawn back until the perforation E is exposed. The cord H, attached to the tompion, is then passed through the said perforation from the apex of the recess F to the outside of the stem orshaft and along in the groove e, and the stem is then drawn into the tube, as shown in Fig. 5. The end of the applicator carrying the tompion is then introduced, and when the point of application is reached the tube is drawn back and a slight tension exerted on the cord H to clear the tompion, and the applicator is gradually withdrawn, and thus leaves the tompion in position and brings the free extremity of said cord outward without displacing the said tompion from the position in which it is desired. that it remain.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- An applicator having a stem with a concave recess in one end, an aperture running obliquely from the said recess rearwardly and outwardly to the outer surface and a longitudinalgroove leading from the rear outlet of said aperture through the surface of the stem to the said recessed end of the latter, and a longitudinal concave depression at the opposite extremity, and a single tube flared into a bell at one end and applicable to either extremity of the stem.
