Description
JOHN ZELLEROF-s'roUCHsBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
Laim Pawn: No; 90,147, Ymaar May is, 1869.
l IMPRQVEMENT. IN WAGoN-mcx.
The Schedule referred to in these'` Lettere Patent and mmaking prt ofthe same To all 'whom` itlmay concern.:
B e it known that I, J ON Zalman, of Stou'chsburg,
in the county of Berks, and State of Pennsylvaniap have invented certain new and useful Improvements in "Wagon-Jacks .and I do hereby deelarethat the "following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionthereof,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, `and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which is represented a perspective view of my wagon-jack,
The nature of my invention/consists in the employc nient 'f a notched bar, provided at itsV upper end with a receptacle'for the axle, and operatedby means of a pivoted lever, and lifting-strap piveted to the end of l said lever, with other devices, all of which will hereinafter be fully set forth.,' 1 To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention'appertains,t0 make and use the same, I will' ,now describe its construction and operation.
ln the accompanyingdrawing i l Arepresents au upright stock, having a part, b, near `its 4upper end,.cut out, and having a rectangular inortise through `the centre, extending from the upper en d to near the lower end.y i
v `B represents a notched metal bar, `sliding in said rectangular mortise, and provided at'its upper end withthel concave projection a,.forining`a receptacle for the axle.
. `(D represents'a lever,'forined with a lnortise, d, at
one end, through which passes the upper end of the.
notched bar B..
` I would hereremark, that the upper end of the stock A is `made as seen inthe drawing, and covered with metal plate, to allow the lever C l'ull play.
The lever C is pivoted inthe uprights e e; (secured to the upper end'of stock A,) by bolt passing through I hole in uprights c c, and through metal straps secured to under side of lever O. c
Over the mortise'zl, in the level', is secured the metal ."plate d', provided with a corresponding imortise, and Ahaving its rear end bent over,'forming a receptacle for one end of the lifting-strap'j; while the other end is i Witnesses:
passed down into the cut-out b into the notched bar l B. The endof this lifting-strap connected with the notched bar, is provided with a cord, or string, g, pass-'- ing up through a hole in the level', and attachedt'o one end of the rod h, which passes through eye-bolts secured Iinthe lever. This device is to throw the lifting-strap out of gear, l
On the lower part of the cut-out bthere is secured a metal plate, j, provided at one end with a staple, i. To `this plate is pivoted the har 1c.
l is a spring, the lower end being attached `to the stock -A, and theupper end resting against the for-Wald side'of the bar It.
mis a knee-lever, made as seeniri the drawing, and. plvoted to the side of'stock A, so that its upper endm' will rest againstwthe rear side of h'ar k, the other end passingdown, and is provided with a small spring, gn.'
'Ihe o eration of In jack is asfollows:
The jack is placed under the ivagon, with the axle I resting upony the concave then, by operating -the lever C, the notched bar B is raised, the bark givingA at each i downward motion of the lever, to allow-the notched, holding tbe notched bar when the bar to pass', and lever is raised.'
By operating the spring m by the foot or knee, and
`the rod lwith the hand, the bar B can be lowered.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-
1. Lever O, in combination with the bail f, har B, and rod or cord g, all arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A lifting-jack, consisting of har B, stock Liever C, bail f, cord or rod y, knee-,lever m, springs An'and l, and stop k, all combined, arranged, and operating substantially as andfor the purpose described.
Y In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own,
I atiix` my signature, in presence of two witnesses.-
' JOHN ZELLEB',
ISRAEL GARRETT, PETER H. RAP?.
