- My present invention, while especially designed for the selling of matches in book form, the packages of which have atapered contour, is not limited to such a use but may be employed for the vending ofv any desired articles. i
To the above ends my invention consists in a novel construction of a container provided with a plurality of compartments and a novel construction of coin controlled mechanism for bringing the difierent compartments successively into such a position that the articles retained within the different compartments will be automatically discharged therefrom. I

For-the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawin s one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since this embodiment best illustrates the principle of the invention and gives in practice satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my lnventlon is not limited to the precise arrangement and organ zation of these instrumentalities as herein represents a sectional plan view on an enlarged scale similar to Fig. 3, but showingthe parts in a different relation to each other.

The lower ortion of the guides 39 are provided with a ongitudinally extending slot 44 which begins near the rear end of said guide members and extends to substantially the forward end thereof, as best seen in Fig. 2, so that when the parts are in the position seen in Fig. 2, the coin cannot pass directly through the slot 35.

It will be seen that in Fig. 1 the slot 4 through which the packages of matches or other articles pass is located, in the present instance, nearv the periphery of the casing cover 3 and in order that the packages will be guided in an accurate manner to said opening, I employ a cam member 69 located on the cover 3 and having an inclined on cam face whereby the matches as they are rotated by the containerwill be deflected outwardly, so that theywill in every case fall through the aperture 4 in said top plate 3 as will be. understood by reference to I Fig. 8.

The operation is as follows :-The casing 5 is first removed and the compartments formed between the blades or apertures 57 are filled with any package which it is desired to vend and when the machine is .full the blank compartment 62 is in alinement with the discharge opening 51. A coin is now inserted by the prospective buyer in the coin aperture 45 and if the coin is of the proper dimensions it will pass through the coin slot 46 and'fall into the coin retainer 36,

It will be understood that after the coin 34 has dropped through the slot 35 and opening 44 onto the receptacle 70 formed by the recessing of the gear 12 that the member 38 will be maintained in its forward position towards the front of the machine by the engagement of the pin 42 with the cam face 41 on said member. its normal position, the pin 42 will move out of engagement with the cam face 41 of the coin retainer member 38, so that the spring 43 will cause said member to be returned to ltS normal pos1t1on and cause the stop 40 to engage with a tooth of the gear 12 so t at the same cannot be rotated until another coin has been deposited in the coin retainer 36.

I wish to call special attention to the spring pressed pawl 22, by means of which the gear or toothed disk 12 is actuated, since it Wlll be apparent that unless a coin is deposited in the coin retainer 36, the stop 40 carried by the bottom member 38 will be in engagement with said gear, so that the latter cannot rotate until said stop 40 has been moved out of engagement with said gear 12 by the engagementof the lever 32 with a coin 34, so that when there is not a coin in the coin slot 35 and the lever 15 is actuated, the members 13 and 14 will be moved to the left, but the pawl 22 will not advance the gear 12 since the same is held, as just explained, by the stop 40.
The casing 20 is cut away on one side in order to permit the relative movement of the pawl 22 with respect to said casing, so that if anyone act uates the lever 15 without dcpositing a coin in the machine, there will be no injury or strain on the parts owing to the provision of the spring 25 as will be understood by reference to Fig. 5 and others of the drawin s.
I wis also to call special attention to my novel construction of gear 12, the upper face of which is recessed or chambered to form a coin receptacle 70 of sufficient size that the coins which have been passed into the machine will be retained therein without coming into contact with any of the moving parts such as for example the lever 13 and its adjuncts.
It will now be apparent to those skilled in this art that I have devised a novel and useful construction of avending machine which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of inven-' tion and the above description and while I have, in the present instance, shown and described the preferred embodiment thereof which gives in practice satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that it is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing any of Its advantages.
- Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a vending machine, the combination with arotatable member of a package container actuated thereby, an actuating lever, a spring actuated awl carried thereby, and means for normal y maintaining said pawl out of engagement with said member. 0

In a vending machine, the combination with a rotatable member of a rotatable package container actuated thereby, means for rotating said member, and meansactuated bysaid rotating means for preventing improper rotation of said member when the same reaches the forward limit of one of its lever, a pawl carried by said lever and ada t ed to coact with said member, a tension evice for said pawl, and a guard for normally maintaining said pawl out of engagement with said member. 1

In a vendlng machine, the combination with a rotatable member having a chamber 'on its upper face of a package container op- 'eratively connected with and located above said member, a cam for deflecting packages :from said container on its rotation, a stop for said member, means including an actuating lever for controlling theengagement and disengagement of said stop with said member, and means carried by said lever for r0 tating said member.
