To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY G. Vorerrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, county of Hartford, Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Look Attachments, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. 7
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in looks, the object being to provide a simplified construction for attaching the lock in place on the door, although-incidentally there are other advantages which will be understood from a reading of the following description:
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an edge elevation of a door fitted with my improved lock construction, said view being partly in section. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a portion of a door showing the mortise opening and illustrating by solid and dotted lines the lock case on the opposite, side. 3 is an elevation of a detached detail.
A represents a stile of a door. B represents a lock case containing therein any suitable lock mechanism whereby thelatch bolt or bolts may be operated through the cpnedium ofknobs, or keys, or both as desire Since the invention depends in no way upon the special form of lock mechanism, it is unnecessary to describe the same herein. C represents a back plate at the rear of the lock case B, the same being suitably, secured thereto and adapted to close in or cover theworks. This plate has two rearwardly extending annular bosses C C each of which has its internal wall threaded.
D is an escutcheon plate arranged to stand on the opposite side of the door from the lockcase. This escutcheon plate is preferably provided at its rear side with the annular bosses D D stile is formed of a suitable size and outline to receive the aforesaid bosses C C D D These bosses, when the parts are in place, are arranged to line up in pairs, C with D and C with D E is a, tubular coupling having a flanged portion E arranged to stand outside of the escutcheon plate D, while the tubular portion passes through the boss D and threads into the boss C. A similar tubular coupling is preferably provided for the other set of bosses C and D The central passage A passage through the door through the flange E may be notched at its edge as indicated at E, Fig. 3, so that a powerful wrench of special form may be employed to screw up each coupling to firmly clamp the door stile A between the case B and the escutcheon D. In the form shown, F is a rose plate shown as standing upon the flange E, the edge of said rose late overstanding and hiding notches E from view. G conventionally represents a cylinder lock, the cylinder case of which is made sufficiently long to pass into the tubular coupling E and engage with a reduced threaded portion B in the lock case, and so that the roll back or equivalent device G will stand in the proper position to operate. In this instance this reduced portion B into which the threaded end of the cylinder lock case G is screwed is concentric with the annular boss C and is sufficiently smaller than said boss C to permit the forming of effective threads. I Yhenthe cylinder lock is screwed into place, the usual set-screw, H is set up in the usual manner to prevent the removal or displacement of the cylinder locln A similar cylinder lock may be passed through the other set of bosses or indeed dummies may be substituted in placeof one or both of said cylinder locks, they serving as closures for the otherwise open end of the tubular couplings E. By making the mortise of sufiicient length to receive both sets of bosses, and also so as to provide a snug fit, great rigidity may be given to the lock parts, great resistance being afforded-by the large tubular connections between the same, which tubular connections thus perform the double function of "affording a connecting means and a passage way for a cylinder lock or other operating mechanism as desired.

J is a knob spindle assing through the opening in the door stie. While the preferable construction includes the annular bosses on both the escutcheon plate and lock case, obviously good results may be attained 1 if said bosses were omitted from the escutcheon since the powerful tubular cou lings doors of different thicknesses. It would be possible, of course, to reduce the inner end of each tubular coupling and thread the same to receive the threaded inner end of the cylinder lock instead of attaching the latter directly to the reduced part B. While this latter form is manifestly preferable, this, and other changes may be made Without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
The tubular connecting member by which the lock is secured to one side of the door gives access to said look from the other side of the door, Whenever it is desired to employ operating mechanism to pass therethrough. This is of particular utility in connection With fire doors, which ordinarily have metal lining, because the tubular Wall through Which access to the lock is had from the opposite side of the door furnishes a protect ing means against flames, which under some conditions might attack the wood-Work Within the mortise.
It Will be observed that the parts B and D operate as clamping members to engage against the opposite sides of a door stile, so as to lirmly hold the same between them. It will also be observed that the arrangement herein disclosed provides a correctly alined passage from one side of the door to the other to receive a lock-operating device accessible at one side and passing through and adapted to engage lock mechanism on the opposite side. This is of particular utility When one of the clamping members is a lock case.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described, a case adapted to one side of a door, an escutcheon adapted to the other side of said door, an annular threaded boss projecting rearWardly from the case, a flanged sleeve passing through said escutcheon, engaging the same and being screw-threaded at its inner end to connect With the threaded boss on said case, and a passage into said case in line With said sleeve-like connection.
2. In a device of the character described, a
case adapted to one side of a door, an escutcheon adapted to the other side of said door, an annular threaded boss carried by the case at 1ts rear, an annular boss carried by said escutcheon plate at its rear, a tubular coupling arranged to engage the said escutcheon passing through said boss thereon and screw-threaded at its inner end to engage the screw-tbreaded boss on the case.
3. In a lock, a lock case adapted to one side of a door, an escutcheon plate adapted to the other side of said door, two sets ol annular bosses, one member of each set being threaded and carried by the lock case, the other member of each set being carried by he escutcheon, two tubular couplings llanged at the outer ends and passing through the bosses on the escutcheon plate, and threaded at their inner ends to engage with the threaded bosses on the case.

In a lock, a lock case, an escntcheon plate, a threaded annular boss 'arried by and projecting to the rear of said case, a reduced and threaded opening into said case within said boss, an escutcheon plate and a tubular coupling threaded at one end to engage in the aforesaid boss, and means carried thereby at its other end to engage said (,scutcheon plal e.
6. In a door lock, a case arranged to be carried at one side of the door, a wmpling member (vonnirising a tubular device threaded at one end and provided with a clamping shoulder toward its other end, said lock case having an opening and a threaded \rall surrounding the same, arranged to receive the threaded end of said coupling or c ninecting member.
