Description

f o. J. P LPRPMv Patented oct. 671908.
Ano/mers .PATENT OFFICE.
i Nb.' 900,464.'
Be'i known that LCI-. Non J. Amann,
a citizen oftheUnited States, and a resident of the city of N ewYork, borough of` battan, in the. county and vState of New York, have invented anew and Improved Spool-Case, of which thel following is aull,
clear, and exact description.
This invention'zis an improvement in spool cases, whieh'is designedto form a convenient adjunct for work baskets, work bag and other places where 4sewing thread is usually kept, and vhas for its purpose the provision of la spool `case of ornamental` character, so constructed as to admit of the free withdrawal Vof thethread but frictionally bind the same' and prevent its unwindassembled to so lit as to bind suiciently on ing ,except when intentionally pulled out.
The inventionv 'further contemplates a shearing cutter in connection-with the case, adapted to gr'p the thread and sever it at the points desired.` v In; arrivin Iat a case fulfilling these conditions, I ma e 'use-of two cups 'or thimbles adapted to telescope together, and when thus the thread whenpassed between-them from the spool, as to preventit from working or passing out untll pulled., To one of the thimbles, preferably the end ofthe smaller one, is attached the'shearingfcutter, (which in the present embodiment of my invention, consists of a lip or tongue stamped -or bent. outwardly and presenting an approximately ri ht-angle shearlng edge which cooperates witha like shearing edge around the opening from which the tongue is stamped-to `first the thread when passed there between stantially on t eline 3 -3 of Fig. 2.
' More speciically described, the case proper is composed of two cups or thimbles 5 and 6 respectivel which may be con structed of any suita le sheet material, such, for example, as metal or celluloid. These Specification of'Lett'ers Patent. v xppuauosmameeza19os.sm1m.4a9,745;

'thimbles are of such size that when telescoped to ether-, as illustrated lin Figs. l and, vsu 'cient space will be left'between them` for the passageof the thread from the spool to the outside. This space will, however', notbe so large as to admit of the two thimbles dropping apart, but will friction- -ally bind on the thread and prevent its withdrawal unless purposely pulled, at which time the thread freely unwinds from the spool. `The free -passage of the thread when drawn out is insured by constructing the bottom inner edge of the larger thimble 5 with a fillet 7, which prevents the telescopingiof thetwo thimbles together to an extent su cient to bite the thread between the bottom of the larger thimble and the edge of the smaller one, the latter being rounded ol, as shown in Fig. 3, in, order that the thread will easily'slide over it and notbe cut.
To the case is suitably attached, preferably at'the end of 'the smaller thimble, a
disk'8 which is ordinarily of metal and has a ton ue or lip 9, stamped or bent outwardly there rom and presentlng in connection with the edge of the o ening from which the tongue is stampe approximately rightangular shearing edges for the thread. The action of the lip or tongue-9'when the thread is inserted under it, is first to firmly grip the same and prevent it from pulling from the spool preparatory to severing it, thus obviously making it unnecessary to grasp the thread at both sides as would be the case in the use of an ordinary cutting edge. The
case is ornamental inappearance, and since it completely incloses the thread it keeps it in a clean'condition.
While I have shown the cutter made as a separate piece and attached to the` case, this will ordinarily be so only when the case is etv made Aof celluloid silver or -other material from which an effective cutter could not be made. When, however, the case is made of such material as steel or iron, the tongue 9 will be stamped directl from the thimble.
Having thus descri ed my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure b y Letters Patent: v
l. A spool case .comprising two telescop- `ing thimbles adapted to inclose a spool of thread, said thimbles being of such relative ,size as to admit of the passage of the thread from the spool between them andprovide a frictional engagement therefor.
2. -Aspool case comprisingtwo telescopngthiiiibles'adapted to inclose afsp'ool of thread',and between which the thread from the fspool. is adapted to pass outwardly, and a c'utter Afor severing the thread, carried by one of said thimblesx. f g -3.`A s'oolI case comprisin two .telescoping thim les, adapted to inc ose a spool of thread, and between which the thread is adapted to pass from the spoolv to the outside, `the outerv of said thimbles having a fillet at the inside' of its"--botto m edge to limit the inward movement of the other thimble.'
4. A spool case comprising ing thimble'sadapted to inc ose a spool-of thread, and b'etween'which the thread from two telescopthespool is yadapted v.to'pass the outside,
' the inner edge of the smaller thimble being `rounded to permit of the free passage of the thread thereover', and the bottom edge of thimble.
l In testimony whereof I have signed my name to-this specication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
