' ATTORNEYS UMTED STATES PATENT OFFICE. FRANK KAISER, OF SURNTON, PNNSYLVANIA.
' marcianas.
To alljwhom'it may concern.:V i
.I Be it known that I, FRANK A. Isiiii, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Scranton, in the county of lLackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Mattress,` of which the ifollowing is a full, clear, and Exact descripion.
This invention relates to' certain improvements in mattresses, cushions or the like, and
I more particularly to the formation of the marginal portions wherebv a roll edge .is formed. I
' In the manufacture of mattresses, the usual method of procedure is to ill the tick' or covering with the stuiiing or filling material,
and to'then sew through the covering from one face tok an adjacent one at a'short distance from the line of intersection of said faces, in order to produce a denite and well-defined edge, commonl roll edge. It is ver di cult to fill the edge uniformly throug out its length' with the stuffing, so that theroll-edge isuniform.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a separate strip of felt, cotton batting or other similar material. The strip is placed along the inner surface of the covering and through a portion of this strip, after .the roll edge is formed complete, the main body of the stuffing or filling material may be inication, in which simi ar c serted in any manner commonly employed in the art. A
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, formin aiv art of this speciliaracters vof reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, and in which Y Figure lis a erspective viewof a mattress constructe in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is atransverse section through a portion of 'the mattress cover ti ned wrong side out and with the strip of fe t or batting in place; Fig. 3 is a section through thel completed covering with the i roll edge and prior to the insertion of the filling material; and Fig. 4 is a section's'imi lar to a portion of Fig. 3, but showing a sli hftl modified form.
n t e formation of mattresses in accordancefwith my invention, IA provideA a tick or covering of any suitable non-elastic woven fabric, the covering having to and bottom faces or sections 10, and: perip eral faces or sections 11. The faces may be securedA to- Bpecmeation o! Letters ratsnt.

known as al gather at their lines of intersection by any suitable form of seam 12. Afters'ewiiig up the covering with one 'side thereof open, the
covering is turned wrong-sideout and a strip 13 of fel-t or cotton isv 'lace' d over the peripheral facesD and exten a t in short distance alongthe top and bo faces, substantially as shown at the ,left of Fig. 2. This strip of soft material is temporarily secured in place in any -suitable manner, as,for instance, by pinning or basting, andthe covering is then turned right side out. I then sew or stitch through the adjacent faces at a -short distance from their line of intersection, so as to secure said faces together and hold a portion of the strip therebetween, as shown in Fig. 3.
A portion of the strip is compressed and held adjacent the seam 12 to form a roll or bead 14, permanently held in place by the line of stitching 15. The mattress is then filled or stuffed with any suitable filling material 17 in any suitable manner, as, for ining or dislodgment of the `stuiiin or filling of the mattress. The stri exten ing across from one .roll 14 to the a jacent one, serves to space the corner, seams 12 apart andhold them more rigid in' res ectl to each other and give'the mattress a wel -definedborden l,
By placing the strip 13.in positionwith the covering wrong side out and then turning it right side out before puttin in the stitching 15, a greater amount of t e strip `is forced into the' corner 'adjacent the seam 12 to form the. roll. To give the roll slightly greater rigidity, I, may -if de s'ired, place a cord 16 upon the inner surface of the strip, and by then stitching the faces 10. and
l11 together inside of the cord', -the cord stance, by hand or by .machines desi ed for vthe urpose. The roll edge is hel ermaneiitl)y in position, irrespective of any oosen- Asaid stri in pothe insertion of the main filling material and separate therefrom, and inserting said main ing, a strip of felt or the like, separate' from the lling material andin engagement with the inner surface of the coveringadjacent the lines* of 'intersection of adjacent faces, said strip being secured in place' ly stitching through said adjacent faces at a distance from .their line of intersection, and a filling material separate from said strip.
3. A mattress having a covering, a strip of feltor the like upon the inner surface of the covering along the intersection of adjac'ent faces, c'ord in engagement with the inner surface of the strip, and a. line of stitching through said ad]acent faces to secure them together at a distance from their line of intersection and to hold a portion of 20 said strip'and said cord therebetween to form a roll edge. v
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
