Description

May 13, 1969- M. SCHUCKMAN 3,443,267
PILLOW Filed Sept. 1.9, 1967 INVEN-ron NEVERS SCHUCKMAN United States Patent O 3,443,267 PILLOW Meyers Schuckman, Skokie, Ill., assignor tot American Feather Products, Inc., Chicago, Ill., a corporation of Illinois Filed Sept. 19, 1967, Ser. No. 668,907
. Int. Cl. A47g 9/00 U.S. Cl. -341 1 Claim ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A pillow comprises two compartments each being about one-half the pillow height. One compartment contains down feathers and the other contains resilient uncrushed feathers. There are two different ticking materials, one constituting the outer ply of each compartment.
This invention relates to improvements in pillows.
It is an object of this invention to provide a pillow having a filling of a soft layer of fluffy down feathers and fa filling of a firm layer of resilient small feathers, the two layers being superimposed and separated by a thin ply of fabric so that the illing of each layer is in its own compartment. There is thus provided a pillow in which each side has a different iirmness so that a user can select the desired firmness :as a headrest.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a pillow of the type stated in which there are two different ticking materials having different textures, one ticking constituting the outer ply for each layer so that the filling material of the layer can be identified by the texture of the ticking.
The attainment of the above `and further objects of this invention will be apparent from the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof.
In the drawing:
FIG. l is a perspective View of one type of pillow constructed in accordance with and embodying the present invention;
FIG. 2 is ia sectional view, on an enlarged scale, taken along line 2-2 of FIG. 1; and
FIG. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of a portion of FIG. 2 in the region of the marginal seam of the pillow.
Referring in more detail to the drawing, 1 designates a pillow comprising outer plies of ticking 2, 3 and intermediate plies 4 of muslin or like material. The plies 2, 3, 4 are superimposed and are marginally lsecured together throughout their peripheries by suitable stitching. Except for a portion along one transverse edge of the pillow, the stitching is a hidden stitch 6. The stitching also secures the ends of a strip of ticking material 7 that is Wrapped around a peripheral bead 18 so that the pillow presents a beaded edge.
The intermediate ply 4 forms with the ticking plies 2, 3 separate filling compartments 10, 11. The compartments 10, 11, when filled, thus provide separate pillow layers with each layer being substantially one-half of the thickness of the pillow. The iilling materials in the two compartments are dissimilar such that one of the pillow layers is firmer than the other. Furthermore, the material of ice the ticking ply 2 has a different texture from that of the ticking ply 3.
In a preferred form of the invention, the filling material in the compartment 10 may be down feathers and the filling material in the compartment 11 may be whole feathers, uncrushed, which are coarser than the down feathers. The ticking material 2 may be down-proof linenfinish ticking cotton of a thread count of 104 x 76. The ticking material 3 may be 8 ounce/square yard cotton Sateen.
The pillow 1 may be constructed in a known manner as by superimposing the three panels 2, 3, 4 and the ticking-Wrapped bead 8, then securing the pieces together by the stitch 6 so as to leave an unsewn portion along a part of one transverse side of the pillow-bag assembly. Then the assembly is turned inside out. The compartments are then lled with their respective filling materials through the openings of the unsewn portion. The openings are then closed by expo-sed stitching 12 through the plies and the wrapper-ticking 7.
The precise construction herein shown is merely illustrative of the principles of the invention. What is considered new and sought to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A pillow comprising three superposed plies stitched together by stitching that extends through the plies and throughout the perimeters thereof but leaves an unsewn portion, thereby providing an assembly that is subsequently turned inside out to produce a pillow bag with two outer plies and an intermediate ply and in which said bag can be lilled through the openings at said unsewn portion and wherein said stitching is hidden within said bag, and separate stitching closing said unsewn portion, the two outer plies being of ticking material, the intermediate ply forming with one outer ply one compartment and forming `with the other outer ply another compartment, each compartment containing resilient pillow filling material and with the pillow filling material in each compartment being the same throughout that compartment, the lling material in each compartment being kept separate from the filling material in the other compartment by said intermediate ply thereby to form two discrete pillow layers, and the lling material in one of the compartments being `of down feathers and the filling material in the other compartment being whole feathers that are coarser than down feathers so that one layer is lirmer than the other layer, one of said ticking plies being a down-proof linenfinish ticking and the other of said ticking plies being a -sateen-iinish ticking so the filling material adjacent to each ticking ply can -be identified by the texture of the ticking ply.
