Claims.
This invention relates to a mattress, cushion, or the like and also to the method of their manufacture.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved mattress or cushion, etc. and also a simple and expeditious method of forming the same. The new mattress is provided with a permanently anchored edge-roll secured to the marginal springs and supporting the edge of the mattress and with a highly flexible mattress boxing which is maintained in taut and straight position by connections between portions of the boxing and the edge-roll. Other specific objects and advantages will appear as the specification proceeds.
The invention is illustrated, in its preferred embodiment, by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a broken plan developed view of a mattress embodying I my invention; Fig. 2, a.
broken elevational view; Fig.3, a broken sectional view, the section being taken as indicated at line 3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4, a detail sectional view, the section being taken as indicated at line 4 of Fig. 3.
For the purpose of illustration, the invention is described in connection with a mattress and its manufacture, although it will be understood that the invention is equally applicable to cushions, etc. A designates the spring-structure of the mattress which consists of parallel rows of springs l0, united by helical connector wires H, to form a suitable filling for the mattress. For the purpose of illustration, only the upper half portion of the mattress structure is shown, the
lower half of the mattress being substantially identical with the upper portion.
As the first step in the process, I apply a cotton strip l2 about a marginal-edge l3 of the springstructure. Over the strip is placed a fabric strip 0 l3 of'muslin or the like. The muslin is secured about the marginal spring-edge l3 by means of staples I4 or other suitable means. This provides a somewhat circular spring edge-roll IS.
The border-boxing consists of a single-ply fabric piece Hi. To the border-strip I6 is stitched a padding-strip comprising a filling ll of cotton or the like, and an inner lining l8 of muslin, etc.
Parallel rows of stitches l9 secure the inner lining l8 at an intermediate point to the borderstitched directly to the free end portion of the fabric I3 as shown more clearly in Fig. 3.
I next place above the springs, suitable loose filling material 22, such as cotton, hair or the like, which supplements the spring-structure. 5 Similar filling material is placed under the springs in conjunction with the border and edgeroll construction which is, as stated above, formed as has been described with respect to the upper half of the mattress. After the placing of 10 the filling material 22 in position, 1 fold the outer free end of the inner lining l8 over the filling and secure the top and bottom casing fabrics 23 to the edge portions of the border-boxing by tape stitching, in the ordinary manner.
The steps of the above described method are shown to a large extent by the developed view in Fig. 1, the steps being shown in sequence from left to right. The operations followed for the top edge of the mattress, as shown, are the same as those followed in the forming of the lower portion of the mattress.
The method is simple and provides for the expeditious fabrication of the mattress while at the same time producing an improved product.
While I have described the invention in connection with a mattress, it will be obvious that it is applicable to cushions of other spring-supported bodies. The changes necessary to adapt the invention to such other bodies are obvious and can be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no unnecessary limitations should be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible, in view of the prior art.
v I claim:
1. In a mattress, cushion or the like, a body of coiled springs serving as a filling, a single-ply border-boxing. adjacent the marginal rows of springs, a lining-equipped padding layer secured to said border-boxing at an intermediate point of the padding layer by stitches which engage the boxing below the top of said marginal springs, means securing the lower free portion of said lining to the marginal spring edges, a filling layer on the top of said springs, and a casing fabric over said layer and spring structure and having its edges secured to the upper edges of the border boxing. 2. In a mattress, cushion or the like, a body 01 coiled springs serving as a filling, a single-ply border-boxing adjacent the marginal rows of springs, -a padded edge-roll secured to the upper marginal edge of the spring structure, a padequipped lining stitched at a point intermediate its length to the border-boxing below the edgeroll, stitching connecting the lower free end of said lining to said edge-roll, a layer of filling above said springs, and a casing fabric above said layer and springs and having its edges secured to the upper edges of the border boxing.
3. In a mattress, cushion or the like, a body of coiled springs serving as a filling, a single-ply border-boxing adjacent the marginal rows of springs, pad-equipped linings secured to said boxing by stitches passing through the lining at an intermediate point and engaging said boxing within the span of said springs, a layer of filling material above and below said spring structure, the outer end portion of said linings being folded over said filling material and the inner end portion of said linings being secured to the edges of said marginal springs, and a top casing fabric above the upper layer, bottom casing fabric below the lower layer, and means securing the edges of the casings to the corresponding edges of the boxing.
' 4. In a mattress, cushion or the like, a body of coiled springs serving as a filling, a border-boxing adjacent the marginal rows of springs, said boxing being provided at its upper side with a padded lining, the lining being secured to the boxing at an intermediate point of the lining below the top of said springs, means securing the lower portion of said lining to the marginal springs, a layer of filling material over said spring structure, a second layer of filling material about the top edge of said border-boxing and separated by the top portion of said lining from said first mentioned layer filling material, and a casing-fabric over said layer and having its edge portion secured to the corresponding edges of the border-boxing.
5. In a mattress, a body of coiled springs serving as a filling, a border-boxing adjacent the marginal rows of springs and having its central portion unpadded, a lining layer secured to the border-boxing at an intermediate point of the lining layer by stitches which engage the boxingbelow the top of said marginal springs, means 20 securing the lower free portion of said lining to the marginal spring edges, a filling layer on the top of said springs, and a casing-fabric over said layer and spring structure and having its upper edge secured to the edges of the border-boxing.
