application filed Hw 13, 1907, Serial To on whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY L. FORHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have inventer. an Improved Revolver for Processing Canned Goods; and. I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which-will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.-
My invention relates to revolvers for processing canned goods and this application is a division of my former application, No. 357,178, filed February 13, 1907 upon which Letters Patent No. 885332 were issued April 21, 1908.
It is the purpose of my invention to rovide a container or revolver for holdin erlnetically sealed cans while they are lieing processed in-the retort, said container bein so constructed and operated as to cause eac i can to revolve durmg the process and at some point during said revolutions of the cans, to receive a sudden check by which the revolution of the cans is arrested. thus agitating the contents.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section of the container or revolver showing one of the panstherein; Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the retort with parts broken away; Fig. 2' is a detail showing the recess in the rear end of the retort for the adof the track.
- in position.
mission of the shaft; Fig. 3 is 'a detail showingthe rear wall of the revolver in cross section and a portion of the shaft therein; Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing the rear end of the retort and revolver; Fig. 5 is an end view of the ordinary retort with the door removed, and the revolver therein; Fig. 6 is a detail showing the rollers disposed from side to side The retort a is of the'ordinary construction, see Figs. 4 and 5. It is provided at the side of the front end with the ordinary swinging clamps b, b by which the door is clamped. At the rear end the retort is also provided with a bracket 0 which supports in a proper journal the shaft (1 which enters the rear end of the retort through a suitable air tight passage and terminates in a square or rectangular head. This shaft (1 maybe provided, as shown in Fig. 4, with a gear 0 intermatching with the gear 1 upon a shatt hav- Speclficatibn of Letters Patent.

ing a pulley 4 whichmay bebelted to the main or other shaft, or various other means for imparting power to the shaft may be used. The bottom o'f-the retort should be provided. at either side with a track. or guide 1), p, see Figs. 5 and 6. fis a hollow cylinder of metal, the ends and sides 'of which I prefer to pperforate with small holes g, The rear en of the cylinder is central y provided with a square or rectal-i ular o ening 2 for the reception of the bee or cm of the shaft d, see Fig. 3. The front of this cylinder has a removable cap 10 which may be secured, when desired, to the cylinder by clam "s, looks or other fastenir devices. For t 0 reception and holding ol' thc'cans, I provide ans k, k, the diameter: ol which are slightly ess than the diameter of the cylinder Within the pans, I )rovide a partition h m. the form of an invo ute circle or spiral, see Fi 1. The partition extends from the centra stud s irally to the wall of the an. The space etween the various parts o the s iral or partition is slightb greater than the iameter of the cans: see I' ig. 1. The depth of the retaining side of the pan and of the partitionh which forms the involute circle is slightly in excess of the height of the cans to be operated on.
The operation of the device is as follows: The pan k is laced upon its side and nearly but never quite filled with cans as shown in Fig. l. When the cans have thus been placed in the pans, the pans are placed in the cylindcrf until it is iillcd. The cap of the cylinder is now placed in position and secured and the cylinder )lttCOd upon the specially con-- structed true-l; 11:, see Fig. 5, or the cylinder may be filled upon said truck. This truck is provided with wheels at each corner adapted to runin the tracks p, p, and is also provided with t o rollers 0, 0, one on each side, see
not, however, confine myself to a single roller at each side of the truck as their number 7 may be increased, so that the cylinder rests upon a succession of rollers ex nding from side to side of the truck diminishing gradually in diameter towards the center, see Fig. 6. The truck is now rolled into the .retort upon the tracks p,
, see Fig. 5, and when the cylinder s corn etcly'wi'thin the retort the aperture 2 in 'he real; of the cylinder receives the end of the shaft d; The door 11 is now closed in the ordinar manner and clamped and steam admit-to to the retort through the ipe 5, see Fig. 4. Power is applied to the s raft d which causes the cylinder f to revolve and the cylinder f is revolved a number of revolutions, allowing each can to revolve a certain distance, which is equal-to the s ace between the partitions not occupied y cans, when the revolutions of the cans cease. The rotation of the shaft is then reversed causing the cans to revolve in the opposite direction with a like agitation when rotation again ceases preparatory to revolution in reverse direction.
The cooling of the cans may be effected before removal from the retort, cold water being admitted through the pipe 5 and the cylinder revolved in the same manner as while the cans are being processed or, if preferred, the cylinderf may be removed from the retort, after the processing is accomplished and placed in a like retort to which. cold water may be admitted and the cylinder f then revolved as during the processing of the cans.
The advantage and improvement over the device covered by my said Letters Patent, N o. 885,332, herein bel'ore'refcrred to, inw hich the partitions are made circular arising from .disposing the partitions spirally from the center of the partitions to their outward wall as in the present ap lication is found in reatly increased num. er of cans which may be placed in pans of the same diameter. 111 the construction shown in said Letters Patcut a space equivalent to two or more cans must be left in each compartment formed by the circular partitions and the transverse partitions, whereas in the present application a space equivalent to two or three cans only need be left in the entire pan.
What I claim is: I
1. In an apparatus for processing canned goods, 9. retort, a series of pans, each provided with a spiral partition extending from the center of the an to the wall thereof, a container adapte to receive and hold said mm, and means for revolving said container hrst in one direction and then in the other within said retort, substantially as described.
2. In an apparatus for processing canned goods, a retort, a series of pans, each provided with a spiral partition, a container with. perforated walls, and means for revolving said container first in one direction and then in the other. within said retort, substantially as described.
In an ap aratus for processing canned goods the comliinationof a retort, a horizontal container situated within the retort, romovable pans adapted to be supported upon their sides within said container, each of said ans provided with a spiral partition extendmg from the center of the pan to the \i all thereof forming a continuous canal for the reception of cans, said canal being of substantially the same width as said cans, and means for revolving said container first in one direction and-then in the other, whereby said cans are revolved in opposite directions and agitated.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing my invention 1 have hereunto set. my hand this fourteenth (lay of January, A. l). 1908.-
llENltY ,IJ- FQRIIAN. Signed in rcscncc ol'' (inc. 1. Burn,
