PROTECTOR FOB. DRAFT TIMBERS.
APPLIOATION FILED cums, 190s.
Patented Sept. 29, 1908.
Wfl ness e s:
ANDREW P. NORDEEN, OF MISSOURI VALLEY, IOWA.
PROTECTOR FOR DRAFT-TIMBERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 29, 1908.
Application filed January 8, 1908. Serial N 0. 409,875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW P. NORDEEN, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Missouri Valley, in the county of Harrison and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Protector for Draft-Timbers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful im rovements in a protector for the ends of d faft timbers, such as are usedon cars of various kinds, and'it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction, novel arrangement, and operation of the thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a protector for draft timbers which shall be simple and inexpensive in construction, strong, durable and efiicient in operation,
and so made that it may be readily secured in place and in such a manner as to prevent the end of the timber on which it is secured becoming battered or broken by reason of contacting with other timbers or parts of cars.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention pertains, to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe it, referring to the accompanying drawing, in
which I Figure 1 is aperspective view of a portion of two draft timbers of a car, showing their front ends equipped with protectors therefor embodying my invention, and illustrating by dotted lines the position the draw-head will occupy; Fig. 2 is a top lan view of a portion of one of the draft tim ers, showing the protector secured thereon; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 1
looking in the direction indicated by the arrows; and Fig. 4 is a detached bottom perspective view of the protector.
Like numerals of reference, refer to corresponding parts throughout the different views of' the drawing.
As my invention relates sim ly to means for protecting the ends of the g of cars, I have not deemed it necessary to elaborately illustrate the ,car construction, but have only shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing two draft timbers 5-5 which are located in parallelism with one another in the usual manner on the car-frame, and have at their parts timbers, will be locate ners of said timbers, which corners may be raft timbers front portions a transverse sill or beam 6, which is commonly known as the dead wood, and which is secured to the draft timbers 55 by means of bolts 7 extended through suitable openings inthe piece 6 and timbers 5, as well as in the top portion of the protector.
Fitted on the front end of each of the draft timbers 5 is a protector 8 therefor, which may be made of any suitable size and material, but preferably of malleable cast iron, and substantially of the form shown in the drawing. That is to say, the protector is formed box-like in shape and has a rectangular cavity 9 in which the end of the draft timber is fitted.
As shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing, in which view I have illustrated the protector in an inverted position, it will be understood that the bottom and rear end of the protector '8-is left open while its front end is formed with a vertically extending and rounded enlargement 10 on its outer surface, while the interior of the cavity 9 at said corner is formed with two obtuse angles 11, thus furnishing a thickened portion 12, which when the protectors are in position on the draft at the adjacent corcut away as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2
to correspond in shape with the angles 11 of the cavity of the protector. The rear portion of each of the side walls of the protector is provided with an opening 13 through which a bolt 14 is passed to secure the rotector in place on the timber. The top 0 the protector is also provided with o enings 15 for the reception of the bolts 7 wiich are used for securing the dead timber in position.
From the foregoing and by reference to the drawing it will be seen and clearly understood that by employing a device embodying my invention a very convenient-and durable rotector for draft timbers is furnished and one that can be readily applied to the timbers or removed therefrom, when desired.
Having thus fully What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. As an improved article of manufacture, a protector for draft timbers consisting of a box-like body having its rear end and bottom open and provided at its front end with simple, inexpensive,
described my invention,
a vertically disposed enlargement located at one of the corners of the hody, the cavity one of the corners of the body. of the body being formed with ohtuse angles 2. As an improved article of manufacture, near the said enlargement. a protector for draft timbers consisting of a ANDREW P. NORDEEN. 5 box-like body having its rear end and bot- Witnesses:
tom open and. provided at its front end with ERIC J OIINSON,
a vertically disposed enlargement located at l WM. NORDEEN.
