Appiimson sued Auguszaieo'z. seriaino.3ss,voo.
To all whom it -ma-y concern:
Bc it. known that we, JOHN'Y. BAssnLi. and FRED C.' BLENKNER, citizens of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State' of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful` Iinorovement ir. Gini-Sights, of which the fo owing is a speciiicationf.
Y The object of the invention is 4to provide a simplified rear sight more especially adapt-- edforuseon what .a-reknown as sporting rifles.
Brielly, the; invention consists of a. sighting member inclu-dinge sight disk provided with a plurality of sight apertures, un open orV notch sight on thessigliting member, a suporting-plate oibar lor said sighting niemer adapted for attachment to the rifle barrel, mechanism for adjusting said plate verticall with res ect to the barrel to provide for e evation o the sighting member, and mechanism for adjusting the plate laterally of the barrel to provide for ivi-ndage correction.
In the .accompanying drawings showing one embodiment of' the invention, Figure. 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a rifle nrrcl with the. sight-ing device attached, Fig. '2 is a top plan view'of the sighting device attached tolti. rifle barrel, Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line as-.r of Fig. '2, Fig.- 4 is a top ilan view, with parte broken out, of the incciianism for adjnstiig the sighting device to correct for Windagc, Fig. 5 is a irontview ol' the. sight leaf with the sight disk and open or notch sight thereon, Fig. G is al to plan View of the mechanism for adjusting t ie sighting device for winiiage correction, and Fig. 7 is -a sectional .view of the sighting member und i riiie barrel', said lea taken on the line of Fig. 5.
in the several views 1 designates a rear portion of a ri tle barrel provided on its upper surface with a transverse wedge shaped oovc to receive a correspondingly shaped lock 2 by which a plate or 'oar 4 for supportinv the sightinel member is secured to the plate being provided with a transverse groove to' receive said block 4and permit n siiding lateral Inoveinciitof the plate with respect to the ritlebarrcl.
5 designates a sight leaf pivoted to thc plate 4 atits rear end or the end nearest the gun stock. The sight leaf 5 is provided at its pivoted end with a flange member 6 extending at right angles to the face of the leaf' and containing an open or notch sight 3.
. 7 designates a sight disk provided with a plurality of sight apertures 7* arranged with their sight-inv cent-ers eq'iially distant from the center oi:7 the disk. l he sight disk .7 is seated in a reces in the sight leaf and is pivotcd to rotate therein, the leaf being provided at its lower side with an aperture 5 with which the sight apertures `inthe disk aline -when said apertures lare in sighting position.
The inner surface of the disk 7 is rovided with a series of notches, one of W iic'li is indicated in cross section in Fig. .7 at 7b, to receive a projection b'on the inner surface of the sight .leali whereby the-sight disk is latclicd in the sighting position of the several sights, the sight disk eing yieldii'igly held against the sight leaf by means of a small j coil spring I8 seated in a pocket in the disk and bearing against the head of the 'screw 7d secured to the sicht leaf 5 and forniing'the pivot for are Sigia (usi. The Sigia disk is inilled on its rini to permit the rotation there- 'V of with the thumb or finger.
It will be seen that the sight leaf 5 can be moved on its pivot to vertical position for` sighting through the apertures in the disk or to horizontal position for bringing the open or notch sight 3 into sighting osition. 'To latch or hohl the sight leaf in t e respectivo positions thereof a small plate spring 9 is seated in the supporting late, which spring engages respectively the )ase ofthe leaf t0 hold the same in vertical osition and the rear face of' the leaf to hol( it in horizontal position. The plate 4 is grooved orhollowed out at 4" below the. spring 9 to provide for corner 5" of the enf o in adjusting `the leaf to` horizontal and vertical positions. l
As beforestated the plate 4 is adjustable laterally with respect to the rifie barrel, this adjust-ability being to rovide for windage correction. T o elfecttliis adjustment with ease and precision We employ a screw 10 that engages a threaded block .1 on the lower surface of the i ortion 12 of the. plate 4, the screw itself eine; held from lateral rnovement oy means or sleeves 13 and 13 lxed to the block 2 and engaged respeeivelv by a nut 111 and a'eoiiar 15 on the-screw. he upper surface of the block 2 is provided with a. scale 1C with which the edges 12* and 12b of the. portion 12 cooperate to indicate the extent of lateral movement of the.d plate under. 11!
the action of the screw 10.
.Agp
the sighting member carried thcrebv said parte is made of resilient. metal andis formed intermediate its ends with a frame portion 17 in which is fitted a. wcdging block 18 to engage an inclined. inner surface 17* of said traine a nd the upper surface of the ritle barrel. 'lhc wedging block 18 is provided with a lugr 1H that. passes through a slot 17" in the upper surface of the frame 17 and hassecured to it a cani latch 19 for latchingr the wedgeblock in adjusted position, saidI latch also serving as a handle by which the wedge is the lugA 1S.a of the wedge block and is provided with a cani surface 19* to engage the uppersurface frame port-ion 17 and lock .the wedge block in adjusted posit-ion when the latch is' thrown down. rl`he` wedge block 18 is also in 20 that projects on e slots 21 in the frame slots being inclined downwardly towards the fixed end of the It. will be seen that in moving the wedge block forwardly the plate 4 and sightmoved. The latch t!) is pivotcd to of the provided with a guide 20 cac-h side through gui( portion I7, said guide plaie 4.
25 ing member carried thereby are elevated and when the wedge block 'is moved backward the plate 4 moves or springs of its oi 'n resiliency towards its normal position against the. gun barrel. Ascale 22 is provided on one 3o side' of the frame 17 and an end of the guide pin '20 is provided with an index 23 for cop eration with said scale to indicate the extent of eleva-tion of the plate 4 and sighting,y meniber.
lt is obvious that. the device provides for a wide ranfe. of conditions in sport shooting or other uses to which the device may be a plicd and furthermore the device is ofsimp e construction, irotrudes but slightly above 40 the rifle barrel, and may be adjusted with facility and great accuracy to meet visual capabilities of the shooter, to compensate for the etiect of. wind and to provide for various atmospheric conditions.
