The `Schedule referred to inthese Letters Patent and making of the same.
Beit known that IgHUcrr H. ORAIGIE, of the city andi` State of New `York, have invented, made, and applied to' use, a certainnew and useful Improvement in Oocks for Water-Closets; and I do-herebydeclare the following to be a full, `cl`ear,.a'ndg exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this speciiicatiom-'wherein- Figurel' isa vertical `section of said cock or valve.
asopen, and i u xFignre 2is a plan of the same, with the Vvalve and V-its cap removed.4 l i j Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
'Valves have been made with a diaphragm', containing an opening, that. forms av valvefseat; and to this a valve has' been applied, with an elastic` face; but it Y is found that valves ofthis general class are subject tosudden` concnssionof the valve on the seat,pro duced by the ram-action of the water owing through the scat.` This concussion-is injuriousto the valve and to thepipes, aswell asbeingvery disagreeable, in
consequence of the noise.`
The nature of my said invention consists in amovable ring appliedA to hold a leather or elastic washer to the seat, so that the valve itself can be made entirely ofmetal; and I form said valve with a cylindrical base, that enters theelasticseat, and `closes thel water-way before the valve lcomes down Vupon its seat, and, by this means, the iiow of the water is' first stopped, so that the-momentum thereof cannot produce any concussion of the valve on th'e seat, but said valve will close giad-k ually, and become entirely tight upon the elastic face of the diaphragm valve-seat.
In the drawingd a is the inlet-pipe connection;
, This piston 1c is upouthe valve-stem d, and a small amount 4of play is allowed of the valve-stem through the piston, sotha't, when the valve e is moved to open it, the elastic washer`4,fon the stem d. is `moved away e from .the piston k, opening a water-way for water to y dow freely out ofthe cylinder h, through an opening between the piston k and stem d; but, when the power 'that has opened the valye e is released, the spring l,
immediately moves the stem d, bringing the elastici Washer 4 uponthe piston,l andclosing the inlet to the cylinder h,- hence said valve e can only close gradually as waterleaks into the cylinder lt through a small opening, as at 5. d y y, d
The operation of these parts, that control the mo tion' of the valve in closing, corresponds, generally, to
that set forth in Letters Patent allowed tome J une 3, 1868. The elastic or leather washer 15, that sets upon the seat c, is secured by means of the ring i, that is made with projecting lugs, 6, that pass beneath the screwpart, 2, of the valve-case, thedownward inclines 7 being formed at these points, so that, when the ring fi is turned around, the lugs 6, coming against the incliues 7, cause the ringi to hold the washer 15 firmly to place. g d
The valve e is formed witha cylindrical projection, 8, below it. l j
It will now be understood that,.as the valve e closes, the cylinder 8, entering the opening of the washer l5, stops the fiowof water through the seat, and there can be no concussion, and the valve will continue to move, by the action of the spring and the pressure; until it sets down 'upon the seat formed bythe elastic -washer 5 hence there cannot bethe ram-action and hammering before mentioned.
. The ring i mightbe'screweddown upon the washer `15, suitable openings being left for the passage ofthe water. j VWhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y 1.l The .ring fLand elastic washer 15, `in combination l Iwith the diaphragm seat c of the valve, the parts' being construeted'and applied substantially as set forth.
2. The cylindrical projection 8 of the valve e, in combination with the elastic washer 15 and valve-seat, for the purposes set forth.
L 3. The combination of the elastic washer15, valve e, cylindrical projection 8, piston k, Acylinder h, and
washer 4, to control the .closing of the valve, substanl tiallyas set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my signa-` ture, this 30th day of October, A. D. 1868.
H. H. ORAIGIE. Witnesses: OHAs. H. SMITH, i Gno. T. PmcKNEY.
