BARREL .AND BASKET COVER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER I-IOLKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minnea olis, in the county of Hennepin and State Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Barrel and Basket Cover, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to covers for barrels, baskets and similar containing vessels and has for its object to provide a ventilated cover which forms a closure for the top of the receptacle so as to prevent an unauthorized person from removing the contents thereof while at the same time permitting the contents to be readily inspected.
A further object is to provide a closure having a pivoted section movable laterally to open position, and means for locking the pivoted section in closed position.
A further object is to provide improved means for retaining the closure in position on the receptacle, and means for adjusting the clamping members to fit receptacles of different sizes.
A still further object of the invention is generally to improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability and efliciency.

The improved cover forming the subject matter of the present invention is principally designed for use in connection with barrels,
baskets and similar containing receptacles and by way of illustration is shown H1 conneotion with a barrel of the ordinary construction in which 5 designates the barrel and 6 the upper reinforcing hoop.

The cover comprises a substantially circular frame or body portion 7 preferably formed of a single length of wire one end of which is bent to form an eye 8 while the opposite end thereof is extended through the eye to form a transverse supporting rod 9 the terminal of which is coiled or twisted around the circular frame 7, as indicated at 10. That portion of the cover on one side of the transverse reinforcing rod 9 is relatively stationary and extending between said rod and the adjacent portion of the frame are a plurality of intersecting wires constituting the perforated top of the closure.
Disposed on the opposite side of the reinforcing wire 9 is a pivoted section 11 the frame of which is also preferably formed of a single piece of wire substantially semi-circular in shape with its opposite ends bent around the reinforcing rod to form eyes 12 which constitute the pivotal axis of said section. The frame of the pivoted section is also connected with the reinforcing rod by intersecting longitudinal and transverse wires some of which are spaced apart to form a recess and in which are arranged a pair of parallel longitudinal rods 13.
Depending from the circular frame 7 are a plurality of spaced clamping members 14 each preferably formed of a single strip of metal having its upperend bent around the frame 7 and its lower end extended inwardly to form a flange or finger 15 adapted to engage the adjacent hoopof the barrel or receptacle, as shown.
The intermediate portion of each plate is slit longitudinally and the metal between said slits pressed outwardly to form a loop 16, there being a clamping rod 17 threaded through the several loops with its. terminals extending through depending brackets 18 and provided with angular extensions 19.
The brackets 18 are provided with terminal hooks 20 which engage the frame 7 and are formed with a plurality of transversely alined openings 21 in two of which are threaded an adjusting screw 22 by means of which the tension of the rod may be regulated thereby to clamp the membersletin engagement with the exterior walls of the barrel.
Disposed at the terminals of the longitudinal bars 13 and preferably arranged at right angles thereto is a keeper 23 preferably formed of a single piece of wire having its initermediate portion coiled around the frame 7 and one end thereof extended above the 7 bars 13, said sections being clamp ed in engagement with the rods by means of screws or similar fastening devices 27. Pins 28 are also preferably formed on each section for engagement with corresponding sockets 29 formed in the mating section and which assist in retaining said sections in assembled position.
The sections 24 and 25 are provided with a transverse partition 31 defining spaced compartments 32 and 33, there being a notch 34 formed in the partition in which is slidably Y The opposite mounted a locking bolt 35. 5 ends of the bolt 35 extend through correspondingly shaped openings in the adjacent casing sections 24 and 25, said bolt being adapted to engage the keeper 23 for lockinga the pivoted section in closed position.
Disposed within one of the compartments of the casing is a vertically movable locking yoke 36 which embraces the bolt 35 and is provided with a terminal stud 37 which engages a recess 38 formed in the adjacent wall 5 of the compartment 33,, there being a spring 39 interposed between the yoke and the adj acent wall of the compartment at said re- -cess for normally and yieldably supporting the yoke in elevated position. The opposite 40 end of the yoke is provided with a thumb piece 39 which projects through an opening in one of the casing sections for manipulation with the finger when it is desired to release the bolt.
The yoke 36 normally and yieldably bears against a shoulder {10 formed on the intermediate squared portion of the bolt 35, there being a coiled spring 41 encircling one end of the bolt and interposed between the square portion of the latter and the adjacent end of the casing for normally retracting the bolt.
It will thus be seen that by depressing the finger piece 39 the yoke 36 may be moved out of engagement with the shoulder 40 thus 1 permitting the spring to retract the bolt and disengage the same from the keeper 23.
When it is desired to lock the pivoted section in closed position a longitudinal pressure is exerted on the inner'end of the bolt which forces the outer end thereof within the keeper 23. When the shoulder 40 passes the yoke 36 the spring 39 will force the yoke upwardly thus causing the latter to bear against theshoulder and lock the bolt in extended or operative position,
In using the cover the latter is positioned on the top of a barrel, basket or similar containing vessel with the depending plates of the clamping members arranged in contact with the exterior walls of the receptacle and with the terminal fingers or flanges 15 bearing against the lower edge of the upper retaining hoop, as best shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The adjusting screw 22 is then rotated which draws the brackets 18 together and thus forces the flanges in engagement with the reinforcing hoop of the receptacl-e thereby to lock the cover or closure against accidental displacement. l/Vhen the parts are in this position, an unauthorized person is effectually prevented from sur-, reptit-iously removing the contents of the barrel while at the same time the contents of I said barrel may be inspected through the .per-. 7.

In order to remove a portion of the contents of the barrel it is merely necessary to depress the finger piece 39 when the bolt will be disengaged from its keeper thus permitting the pivoted section to be swung upwardly to open position, in the manner be. fore described.
The covers may be :made in difierent sizes and shapes so as to permit the same to be used on different styles of receptacles.
Having thus described the invention what .is claimed is:
1. A closure for containing receptacles comprising a body portion having a supporting ring, depending clamping members vpivotally mounted on the ring and provided. with means for engagement with the recep- 1 tacle, a rod connecting the clamping members and arranged to engage the exterior walls of the receptacle, and means for ad-. justing the tension of the rod thereby to clamp said members in engagement with the receptacle.
2. A closure for containing receptacles includin a body portion, clamping members pivota ly connected with and depending from the body portion and provided with means for engagement with the receptacle, there being intermediate loops formed in the clamping members, a rod extending through said loops and adapted to surround the exterior walls of the receptacle, and means for adjusting the tension of the rod thereby to clamp the fingers in engagement with-the receptacle.
3. A closure for containing receptacles comprising a body portion having a movable, section, clamping members depending :from the body portion and-provided with means, for engagement with the receptacle, a rod. connecting the clamping members, means :for adjusting the tension of the rod thereby to force the clamping members in engagement with the receptacle, a keeper connected with the body portion and ro d, respectively, anda 1 0 locking member carried by the movable section and engaging the keeper for locking said section in closed position.
4. A closure for containing vessels including a body portion having a movable section, spaced rods carried by the movable section, a plurality of depending clamping members pivotally connected with the body portion and provided with means for engagement with the receptacle, 2. rod connecting said clamping members, means for adjusting the tension of the rod, a keeper secured to the body portion, a sectional casing interposed between the rods on the movable section and having registering grooves formed therein for the reception of said rod, means for locking the casing sections in engagement with the rods, and a bolt disposed within the casing and adapted to engage the keeper for locking the movable section in closed position.
5. A closure for containing vessels comprising a body portion, and clamping plates pivotally connected with the body portion and having their lower ends bent laterally to form fingers for engagement with the receptacle, there being spaced longitudinal slits formed in said plates and the metal between said slits pressed outwardly to form intermediate loops, a rod extending through the loops, and means for adjusting the tension of the rod thereby to clamp the fingers in engagement with the receptacle.
6. A closure for containin receptacles including a supporting frame aving a transverse reinforcing rod, a pivoted section mounted for swinging movement on the rod, said section and the adjacent portion of the frame being covered with intersecting Wires, depending clamping members pivotally connected with the frame and provided with ing screw extending through the brackets for regulating the tension of the rod, a keeper secured to the supporting frame, and a lock ing member carried by the pivoted section and engaging the keeper for locking the pivoted section in closed position.
7. A closure for containing receptacles including a substantially circular frame formed of a single piece of wire, one end of which is provided with a terminal eye, the opposite end of the wire being extended through the eye to form a transverse reinforcing rod having its terminal portion attached to the frame, a pivoted section including a semicircular frame having oppositely disposed eyes'for the reception of the transverse reinforcing rod, intersecting longitudinal and transverse wires forming a closure for the pivoted section and the frame, respectively, clamping plates depending from the main frame and having their intermediate portions formed with loops and their terminals bent laterally to form gripping fingers, a rod extending through the loops, means for regulating the tension of the rod, a keeper, and a locking member carried by the pivoted section and adapted to engage the keeper for locking said section in closed position.
