Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 29, 1905.
Patented Sept. 8, 1908.
Serial No. 276,303.
To all whom it may concern:
I tion 3 of the receptacle. The ordinary pad- Be it known that we, FRANK F. GOKEY, i look 11 passes through the staple on the out WILLIAM R. CHAMBERS, of Winooski, and WILLIAM E. LAPRESE, of Burlington, in the county of Ohittenden and State of Vermont, citizens of the United States, have invented certain ,new and useful Improvements in Cartons; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in cartons or receptacles for holding liquor and the like.
The object of our invention is to provide a simple, and effective device for securing the contents from removal, after being placed therein by the manufacturer, by means of a lock which secures the two parts of the receptacle together, the key to which is placed under a seal carried by the receptacle, and cannot be removed without breaking the seal of transparent material, so that the purchaser has evidence whether or not the receptacle has been opened after it left the manufacturer.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is a perspective view of a receptacle closed by a lock, and a key showing through the transarent seal, and the bottle shown in dotted ines. Fig. 2, is a transverse horizontal sectional view taken on the line xx of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is an enlarged perspective view of a section of the inside of the cover, showing a backing for the recess.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 represents a receptacle which, as shown, is of two telescoping sections 2 and 3, which are securely connected together by a lock which, as shown, is in the form of a hasp lock 4. One part 5 is secured to the upper portion 2 of the receptacle by any desired means, and is hinged at 6, which is the dividing line between the sections, the lower hinged portion 7 being provided with a slot 8 which is adapted to receive a staple 9 carried by the other portion 10 of the hasp, which is carried by the lower secside of the hinged member 7, securely locking the two sections of the receptacle together, and thus it will be impossible to separate the two sections, and remove the contents without unlocking the padlock.
The upper section 2 of the receptacle is provided with an opening 12 in one side which is provided with a backing of paper 13 which is cemented to the inner face of the section, and thus forms a receptacle to hold the key of the padlock, the backing preventing the key from passing into the box. The key 14 is then placed in said receptacle and a seal 15 placed over said opening 12, and thus the key cannot be removed for unlocking the lock without breaking the seal. The said seal is preferably of transparent material, so that the key is readily visible within the receptacle.
The receptacle, as shown, is of an oblong form, and ada ted to receive a bottle which is shown in otted lines in Fig. 1, and as shown, in Fig. 2, we provide a packing of fluted paper 16 which firmly holds the bottle in the receptacle against movement, and prevents the same from becoming broken.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An original manufacturers bottle inclosing case comprising two separable parts, a'lock securing the two separable parts together, the case having a space to receive a key for said lock, and a breakable seal for said space inclosing the key as and for the purpose described.
2. An original manufacturers package, comprising a two-part case, a separate and removable bottle within said case, a lock securing said parts closed, the case having an inwardly-extending recess to receive a key for said lock, and a breakable seal forming an outer wall for the recess to inclose said key, as and for the purpose described.
3. An original manufacturers bottle-in closing case, comprising a two-section telescoping case, a lock for securing the two sections in their telescoped position, the outer I In testimony whereof We do affix our signaseetion having an opening therethroug h optures, in presence of two Witnesses.
posite the inner section, a thin backing secured to the inside of said outer section over said, opening, and forming a key receiving; and holding recess, and a transparent seal on 1 the outside of the outer section and closing the recess and holding the key therein.
