CHARLES FISHER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO 'INTERNTIONAL SAFE COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF WISCONSIN.
-- SAVINGS-B ANK.
i lilo all whom it may con'cern:
Be it known that I, (lnimLEs FIsIiER, a citizen of thc United States, residing at Chicago, in the count-y of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Im )rovement in Savings-Banks, of which the iollowing is a specification.
My invention pertains particularly to savings banks adap'tcd to be carried on the person for the :purpose of inculcating in'the.
young, particularly, habits of thrift and savlily primary object is to provide a savings bank of sim le and inexpensive character, so well adapted) to be carried in the pocket of the user as to insureitsbeing ready at hand for use when theimpulse for saving is felt and before the money is spent which might other- Wise be saved. 'i
A further object is to prevent withdrawal of the coin should the saving impulse of the child be succeeded by an uncontrollable desire to spend the money-before the complete insertion of the coin into the savings bank.
I' accomplish my primary object by providing a flexibleV receptacle: 'orwpurse-body, with a closure sup lied witlrii coin-slot, and I accomplish the rthcr purpose indicated by equipping the coin-slot of th'e` savings purse wit i a coin-gripping device which will yield topermit ingress of' the coin but will firmly grip the coin in the event of an cfi'ort at withi'lrawal.
The invention is illustrated in its pre embodiment in the accompanying die: in which;
Figure l re nesents a ners iectivc view of; C* L an enlarged scale, of my :savings purse.; Fig. "l, an enlarged broken sectional view takenas indicated at line 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a transverse vertical section taken as indicated at line 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a broken horizontal section taken as indicated at line 4 of Fig. 2; F ig. 5, a erspective'view of a spring locking device which is ap lied to the interior of the closuio. reinovaile cover employed; and Fig. 6, a broken erspective viewillustrating the formation o a metallic neck-portion of rectangular shape, which preferably is em ployed. in vconnection with the ilexible receptacle, bag o r purse-body.
In the construction illustrated, A repre sents a iiexible purse-body, bag or receptacle; A* a metallic rim or neck for thc same provided internally at its ends with retainers Specification of Letters Patent.

The urse-body may be of any suitablel form. t preferably is formed of leather, comprising relatively Wide sides "al, an infolded or accordion plaited web o2 forming the relatively narrow sides and bottom of the purse-body, the edges of. the web being j oinedto the bottom and lateral edges ofthe sides al by stitchings a?. The upper portion of the flexible purse-body is contracted somewhat and fits snugly over the main bodyo the metallic neck ortion A1. The part Al may be convenient y formed from a strip of sheet metal which is reparatorily provided in blanking dies with Will now be described, the strip of metal being bent into rectangular form to form the neck. When properly blanked and formed, the metallic neck portion comprises sides o* provided with down-turned flanges a5, and ends a provided with down-turned flanges a".
` One of the ends o is formed by overlapping fr. ends of the strip from which thc neck ion is formed, as shown in Fig. 4, the inr end-being provided with a lug (L8 which .es through an opening a with which 'the curely .ioined together by providing the lower ei ge of the inneli` end margin with an upturned iiange ai l'which embraces the lower margin of the outer end margin, as shown in Fig. G. The side flanges of' are equipped at their lower edges with prongs a, and the lower margins of the side menibers c" are providedwith openings 1.l2 adapted to receive said prongs. The upper portion of the bag or flexible body is slipped over the body of the metallic neck portion and the flanges of", o7 are turned down uponv thc leather, thel prongs a being turned in and caused to perforate the leather and pass through the perforations (U2, after which the outer overlapping end margin of the strip is provided and 1s clenched, as shown 1n Fig. 6. 'lhe end margins of the strip are further seanges which from Figs. and ti.
prongs are clenched upon the inner surfaces of the sides o4, as shown in Fig. 2. The'corners of the metallic neck portion are preferably made ol' li p ic, as indicated at ailito facilitatel the formation olthe scams ol the neck portion oi the bag or to make greater room Vfor the same, as will bc understood from Fig. Ll. rlhe retainers (z are preferably formed by striking the metal otl the end portions a inwardly, :is will be understood The cloni-lling lug f1 is formed by punching a portion oi the metal ol" one overlaming end ol the strip outwardly, as will be undcrstoml l'rom .l"igs. 3 and 6. The clenching lugs u. are also formed in the blankingoperation in a manner which will be readily understood.
The removable cover or cap B may be formed by drawing a piece of sheet metal .into the rectangular cup-shaped form shown.
The member Bi has a horizontal web por.- tion b2 equipped at its ends with downturned arms b3 which carry the spring retainers b1.
Thelateral edges of the web portion b2 are flanges b4,
e uipped with downturned.
('h The ich serve as strengthening ianges.
.web portionlfl is provided with a slot If of greater' width than the coin-admission slot b off the cap B, said slot bi being iianked by upturned flanges having .s'errations or teeth b". The retainer prongs bl preferably incline upwardly1 and outwardly, as clearly shown in Figs. Z and At the ends of the slot If are provided retainers if which serve as 'a part of the permanent connection between the member B and the cap B. The coin-gripping device B2 preferably coinprises a piece of flexible friction material, such as-rubber or a compound of rubber, which is irmly secured between the inner surface of the top portion of the cap B and the u per surface of the web portion b2 of the mem er B1. This rubber strip, which is comparatively thick and suitably stiff, is provided with a longitudinal slit, or eut b, which registers with the coinadmission port b of the cap or closure B and with the wider slot or opening Zfcf the member B, being locatcd `centrall y with relation thereto. The member B1 is provided on its lower side with longitudinal slots which receive the iiang'cs b" of the. web 'portion l)L of the `member B, and the teeth b? press upwardly into the rubber, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, tending to make the connection more secure. At the ends of the slit 1i, the member BY-is provided with v retainers 11S.
member B1 and the inner surface. of the top or cap B.
T he retainer-disengaging member or ke C is preferablyformed by bending a smal steel springl metal bar into the general Usshape shown in Fig. 2, the side members ,thus formed being provided with inwardlyclosure B is removed by the use of the key.
Preferably, the extremlties of the members 'c2 are so shaped as to aiford1 wedges c3 which bear against the inner surfaces of the ends a.6 and against the inclined prongs bl, thereby facilitating the disengaging operation.
The manner of use will be readily understood from the foregoing description. The parts are assembledA in an obvious manner, the member B2 being placed within the cap B with the retainers b passing through the perforations bm; the member B1 is then inserted within the cap B and the extremities of the retainers b are bent to engage the In use, the coin is inserted through the coin-admission ort b, the retaining lips of the member downwardly by the coin, the wider opening oi the slot b5 permitting .this action. Any eil'ort to remove the coin after artial insertion causes the retaining lips o the member B2 to grip the coin tightly, as will be understood. When it is desired to take the contents from the receptacle, the key C is inserted through the coin-admission port of the closure, the member yielding to permit this action, and the prongs c3 are, brought into engagement with the spring retaining-prongs b1, after which an outward pull upon the key will disengage the retaining prongs from the retainers a and withdraw the closure from the neck of the purse-b ody. When the closure is removed from the purse-body, the key may be forced wholly through the coinslot, and the parts may be reassembled by simply pressing the closure on to the neck of the pursebody.
A savings-purse constructed as set forth ite is well adapted to be carried in th'e pocket of seazoe' and no undue limitation yis to be understood therefrom.
