Be it known that I, (lnimLEs FIsIiER, a citizen of thc United States, residing at Chicago, in the count-y of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Im )rovement in Savings-Banks, of which the iollowing is a specification.

My invention pertains particularly to savings banks adap'tcd to be carried on the person for the :purpose of inculcating in'the.

young, particularly, habits of thrift and savlily primary object is to provide a savings bank of sim le and inexpensive character, so well adapted) to be carried in the pocket of the user as to insureitsbeing ready at hand for use when theimpulse for saving is felt and before the money is spent which might other- Wise be saved. A further object is to prevent withdrawal of the coin should the saving impulse of the child be succeeded by an uncontrollable desire to spend the money-before the complete insertion of the coin into the savings bank.

I' accomplish my primary object by providing a flexibleV receptacle: 'orwpurse-body, with a closure sup lied witlrii coin-slot, and I accomplish the rthcr purpose indicated by equipping the coin-slot of th'e` savings purse wit i a coin-gripping device which will yield topermit ingress of' the coin but will firmly grip the coin in the event of an cfi'ort at withi'lrawal.

The coin-gripping device B2 preferably coinprises a piece of flexible friction material, such as-rubber or a compound of rubber, which is irmly secured between the inner surface of the top portion of the cap B and the u per surface of the web portion b2 of the mem er B1. This rubber strip, which is comparatively thick and suitably stiff, is provided with a longitudinal slit, or eut b, which registers with the coinadmission port b of the cap or closure B and with the wider slot or opening Zfcf the member B, being locatcd `centrall y with relation thereto. Preferably, the extremlties of the members 'c2 are so shaped as to aiford1 wedges c3 which bear against the inner surfaces of the ends a.6 and against the inclined prongs bl, thereby facilitating the disengaging operation.

The manner of use will be readily understood from the foregoing description. The parts are assembledA in an obvious manner, the member B2 being placed within the cap B with the retainers b passing through the perforations bm; the member B1 is then inserted within the cap B and the extremities of the retainers b are bent to engage the In use, the coin is inserted through the coin-admission ort b, the retaining lips of the member downwardly by the coin, the wider opening oi the slot b5 permitting .this action. Any eil'ort to remove the coin after artial insertion causes the retaining lips o the member B2 to grip the coin tightly, as will be understood. When it is desired to take the contents from the receptacle, the key C is inserted through the coin-admission port of the closure, the member yielding to permit this action, and the prongs c3 are, brought into engagement with the spring retaining-prongs b1, after which an outward pull upon the key will disengage the retaining prongs from the retainers a and withdraw the closure from the neck of the purse-b ody. When the closure is removed from the purse-body, the key may be forced wholly through the coinslot, and the parts may be reassembled by simply pressing the closure on to the neck of the pursebody.

A savings-purse constructed as set forth ite is well adapted to be carried in th'e pocket of seazoe' and no undue limitation yis to be understood therefrom.

'Vhile all of the features of construction herein illustrated and described were devised particularly for savings-purses, certain of said features may be employed in savingsbanks generally.

What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-

1. ln means of the character set forth, the combination with a receptacle, of a closure, a coin-adinission port and a coin-gripping device comprising a lflexible member provided with a slit registering with said coin-admission port. 2. The combination with a receptacle having a neck equipped with a retainer, of a closure having its top provided with a coin-slot, a retainer carried by said closuie adapted to engage said first-named retainer, and ycoingripping means interposed between the top of said closure and said second-named retainei".

3. The combination with a receptacle equipped with a retainer, a closure provided with a coin-slot of given width, a flexible coin-gri )ping member havin `slit registerin wit said coin-slot, a nu ier beneath said coin-gripping member having a slot of greater width than said coin-slot, and retaining means carried by said. closure and adapted to engage said first-named retainer.

4. The combination with areceptacle having a substantially rectangular neck equipped at its ends -with retainers, a closure telescopically joined to said neck and having its top provided with a coin-slot, and a retainer cai'- ried by said closure having arms provided with yielding retaining members adaptedto engage said first-named retainers.

5. The combination with a receptacle having a neck portion equipped internally with retainers, a closure teleseopically connected with said neck portion and provided with a coin-slot, a flexible coin-gripping member having a slit registering with said coin-slot and provided on its lower surface with grooves, and a member provided with a slot wider than said coin-slot and having flanges engaging said grooves, said last-named member being provided with arms equipped with yielding retaining-prongs, for the purpose -set forth.

portion of the fleXible'purse-body and having flanges folded down u on the flexible material, and a closure te escopically connectedvintorectangular form and having its upper edges equipped with downturned flanges, the

upper portion of the flexible purse-body being received between said flanges and the body of the metal neck, anda closure telescopically connected with said neck and having a coin-slot equipped with'coin-gripping means, for the purpose set forth.

8. The combination with a flexible pursebody, of a metal neck' comprising a strip of metal bent into rectangular form and having overlapping end margins forming one end of the neck-body, one' of said overlapping portions having a perforation and the other having a lug extending through said perforation and clenched, the upper edges of said neck being equipped with downturned flanges provided with clenching lugs, the upper portion of the flexible purse-body receiving the body vof said neck portion and said flanges being turned down over the flexible material and said clenching lugs clenched to secure the parts together, and a closure telescopically connected with said neck portion and having at its top a coni-slot and provided internally with retaining means serving to engage the metallic neck portion of the purse-body, for the purpose set forth. y l

9. The combination. with a receptacle provided with a rigid neck portion equipped internally with retainers, of a closure telescopically connected with said neck portion and equipped internally with retainers engaging said first-named retainers, said closure having its top provided with a coin-slot, and retainer-disengaging means comprising a member of general U-shape, having retainer engaging prongs, for the purpose set forth.

10. The combination with a receptacle provided with internal retainers, of a closure connected therewith and equipped with internal retainers and provided with a coin-slot, and retainer-disengaging means comprising a member having spring arms equipped-with retainer engaging prongs, for the purpose set forth.

11. ln means of the character set forth, the combination of a receptacle having a neckportion equipped with internal retainers, and a slot-equipped closure telescoping with said neck-portion and provided internally with retainers engaging said first-named retainers.

12. In means of the character set forth, the combination of a receptacle having a neckportion equipped with internal retainers, a closure telescopically connected with said neck-portion and provided with a coin-slot, movable retainers within and carried by saidA closure, and retainer-disengaging means insertible through said coin-slot,for the purpose set'forth.

' 13. The combination with a flexible pursebody, of a rigid hollow neck-portion connected therewith and a cap having flanges fitting over said neck-portion and provided in its .top with a coin-slot'.

14.
