The bolt' U is made with a slot transversely, within which the stop R moves, being thrown out, when released, by the spring T.
'.lhe stop has a small spring, r, which, when itis pressed back, forces the sliding-plate r down, so that .the slot through which the rear end, R2, of the stop passes, holds it, by means of a small shoulder.
The sliding-plate r releases the stopwhen it is pressed back by contact with the tumblers, which happens when the combination is not set right. When an attempt is made to draw the bolt, 'when the stop is out, the stop is brought into contact with a post, s, which prevents any further motion till, by means of the lever Z, the stop has been returned to its place.
A flat plate, s', extends back from the bolt, and is connected with the oblong hollow case or chamber V by means of a link, t. The chamber is made with a square opening at the lower or 'front end, so as to t over the end of the. spindle D, and be turned by it, thus moving the bolt.
Within the chamber is a sliding block or plate, u, .having the arms 1, 2, and 3 projecting through vone side' of the chamber, and a little'beyond it.
A spring, V', keeps the plate 'u down against the front face of the chamber until the key is inserted in the knob, as before described.
A small stem, It, is fastened to the plate u, and ex- .tends nearly through the spindle D, in a line with the stem k, so that as k is pressed down by the key, it moves K, and forces the plate -u back, carrying with it the arms l, 2, and 3.
Around the outside of the case V is placed a plate, w, carved so as to form a segment, having the same .centre as the case.
This segment is firmly fastened to the lock-plate, and is grooved, as shown at w', fig. 3, so that when the arms 1, 2', and 3 are raised, they will move in these grooves, but when the lkey is removed, the arms would be stopped by the edge of the plate w, and the bolt 7, on the back of the lock, and which are attached to.
the spindles of the toothed wheels Q, R, S, and l-, respectively, are turned around till their indices point to vthe Vdots shown on 'the lock-plate outside their periphery. This brings the wheels into a position where each is ready to act on the next, if moved, and also moves the lever Z, and presses the stop R* back, so that the bolt can move.
'lo unlock the safe, the knob E is turned till the bolt o'r piu ll is brought into contact with the lug e, e with f, and f with g. The combination being known as 10, 2(1), and 40, or" any other desired, the disks H, I, and J are all turned till the proper number on the disk J corresponds with the point or index G' on the plate K. The knob is then turned back `and'for\vard till the numbers on the disks I and H successively are brought into line. The 'key M is then inserted in the key-hole in the knob F, and turned to a position where it will hold the arms l, 2, and 3, before described, opposite the grooves w' w', in the segment w.
rlhe setting of the numbers correct-ly brings the slots m in the tumblers into a line with the sliding plate 1, so that-as the knob F is turned, and the bolt withdrawn, the' plate r enters the line of slots in the tumblers, andthe safe is unlocked.
But if the combination be incorrectly made, lthe slots 'm' will not all be in the proper' line, and when the attempt is made to draw the bolt, the plate lr stl ikes the edge of some one of the tumblers, and releases he stop R3, which Ilies out, and makes it impossible to move' the bolt. It will then be necessary to turn the knob E and the tumblers till the'lug n, on the tumbler P, shall move the arm p,- thus turning the arm W, pawl X, and the wheels Q, R, S, and T, the last one, T, moving the lever Z,.and.pressiug the stop'R back into place. If the mistake be made a second time, the knob will have to be turned back and forward a ver-y great number of times, till the wheels 'are again brought to their first position, before another trial can be made.
Having thus described my invention,
-What l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the stem c', holding-plate k', and socket-stem D, substantially as described.
2. The stop R, with the catch r, the sliding plate r, and spring T, for holdingand releasing the stop, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
3. The tumblers N O P, with the lugs n n n, the arm p, the wheels Q R S .l, andthe lever Z, the'whole operated from the knob E, for retreating the' stop R, substantially as described.
4..r The device for controlling and operating the bolt, consisting of the rotating case V, the plate n, with its armsI 1,2, and 3, the spring V, the stems k k,'and the key M, together with the slotted segment w, the whole connected and operated substantially as herein described.
