HAIR-DRIER.

To all whom. it may concern:

' Be it known that I, MATHIAS THOME, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hair-Driers, of which the following is a complete specification.

This invention relates to improvements in hair driers and more particularly to a hair drier having a fan adapted to create an air blast and provided with heating means sur rounding the air inlet to the fan casing.

Heretofore in devices of class theair,

which passes rapidly through the machine, does not become sufficiently heated to absorb the moisture from the hair as rapidly as is desirable. 7

The obj ect of thisinvention is, therefore, to

provide a hair drier which, while it does not heat the air sufficiently to cause injury to the hair, is so designed that the rapidly flowing air is raised to a sufficiently high temperature to rapidly absorb the moisture.

It is also an object of the invention to pro- "vide a device capable of heating the air with great rapidity, so that in the short interval of time required for the passage of air 7 through the machine it becomes thoroughly heated.

The invention consists of the matters hereinafter described in the specification and more fully pointed out and defined in the appended claims. r

As shown in said drawings: Aindicates an outer casing of sheet metal or other preferred material'andof any desired form, and which is provided in one side'with a door a by means of which access may be had to the interior of the casing. Said casing is also provided with a plurality of air inlet apertures a in the side walls thereof through which air is admitted. Within said casing A and near the rear Wall thereof is a fan casing B, having an inlet opening I) in the rear wall thereof, and an outlet pipe I) which extends upwardly through the top of the casing A. ' In operation the fan causes air to be drawn into the outer casing through the apertures 01/ and to be drawn into the fan casing through the heater E. l The heater not only acts to heat the air in the outer casing but acts directly on it as it passes into the fan casing, and, since the heater is mounted on the fan casing it is able to create a high temperatui'e therein, so that the air during its entire passage through the device is subjected to the heat. The air passes out of the outlet pipe band through the pipes G and by means of the nozzles is distributed by the operator as desired.

Obviously a hair drier, constructed in accordance with my invention is capable of heating the air to a relatively high temperature in a minimum amount of time, and obviously many details of form and construction may be varied without departing from the principles ofmy invention.

I claim as my invention:

1. The combination with an outer casing of a fan casing therein having an air, inlet in one side, a fan in said casing, means for operating the same and a heating coil engaged to the side of the fan casing and surrounding said inlet. a

2. Ina device of the class described the combination with an outer casing of a fan casing therein having an air inlet aperture in one side, an outlet pipe leading from the.

fan casing through the top of the outer casing, a fan in said fan casing, a motor adapted to drive the same, and a heating coil surrounding said inlet and axially'of which the air passes in entering the fan casing.

3. In a hair drier the combination with an outer casing, of a fan casing therein having an air inlet opening in one side, a fan in the fan casing, a motor adapted to drive the same, a continuous heating coil having a central opening therethrough and axially of which the air passes in entering the fan casing, an outlet ipe leadin from the fan casing through t e top of tie outer casing, a forked connection thereon and a hose en.- gaged to said connection.

In a device of the class described the combination with an outer casing of a fan casing therein,having an air inlet in one side thereof, a fan in said casing, a motor adapted to operate said fan, a heating coil rigidly en gaged to the fan casing and surrounding the air inlet and provided with a central opening therein through which the air enters the fan casing, and a three way switch controlling said heater and motor.
