HAIR-DRIER.
Applicatioit filed October 31,1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVALTE'R L. Mamons a citizen of the United States, residing ati-thei city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Driers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hair drying apparatus, and the object of the present invention resides in the provision of an improved apparatus of the character described, in which an air-heating device is employed in conjunction with an air fan and is located exterior of and so associated with the latter that the cold air which discharges from the fan into the air tube has its temperature raised by the heated air which is drawn from the heating device into the air tube by the suction of the cold air entering the latter.
Further, the present invention consists of the novel features of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which like numbers of reference denote like parts wherever they occur, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hair-drying apparatus embodying the present invention, and Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view of the valve in the flue of the heating device.
In the present invention, an electric motor 1 of any suitable construction is preferably employed, its casing being formed integrally with or otherwise secured to a fan casing or drum 2, and its shaft 3 extending into the interior of said casing or drum to drive the fan (not shown in the drawings) in the usual manner. An air-inlet pipe 4,- is secured to the cover 5 of the fan casing or drum 2 by a bolt 6 or a plurality of such bolts or other suitable means, and a discharge pipe 7 is connected with the air-outlet 8 of said fan casing or drum. One end of the straightway portion of a T 21 is preferably telescopically connected with the end of the discharge pipe 7 and the other end of said straight-way portion is connected with the air-tube 22 by means of an ordinary union 23 or the like, which air-tube discharges the hot air upon the head of a person for the purpose of drying the hair of the latter, the branch 24 of said T being connected to the upper end of a flue 25 by aunion 26 or other Specification of Letters Patent.

suitable means. The lower end of the flue 25*- has an inverted funnel-shaped hood27 secured thereto by a screw 28 or a plurality of such screws or other suitable means, said hood being adapted to receive the heat from either a gas or other kind of burner or heater 29 located beneath same. A plate 30, which is located within the lower part of the straight-way portion of the T 21, is soldered or otherwise secured along its side edges and one of its end edges to the inner wall of the straight-way portion of said T, so that it slopes upwardly from the end of the straight-way portion that is connected to the end of the discharge pipe 7 and extends over the branch 24,1eavinga space 31 between the other end edge of said plate and the bottom of the straight-way portion for the hot-air to pass from the flue 25 into the air-tube 22. By this arrangement. the cool air which is discharged from the fan passes through the pipe 7, then over the sloping plate 30 in the straight-way portion of the T 21, and into the air-tube 22, causing the hot air, which rises from the burner 29 into hood 27 and flue 25, to be drawn through the space 31 into the air-tube 22. In this way, the hot air from the burner 29 and the cool air from the fan become mixed within the air-tube 22, the result being the discharge of warm air from said air-tube, which latter may be arranged to discharge the warm air upon the hair and head of a person for the purpose of drying same. The casing of the motor 1 may bear a lug 32 to be adjustably secured to a standard 33 by means of a thumb-nut 34, the latter fitting on a bolt 35 secured to the standard 33 and said standard being preferably supported on and secured to a portable base 36.
It will be evident that by reason of locating the burner or heater 29 exterior of the fan casing 2 and, also, the discharge pipe 7 and introducing the hot air into the air-tube 22 by the suction of the cool air from the fan as hereinabove described, the motor is prevented from becoming heated and burning out, as sometimes happens when a burner or heater is located either in the entrance to the fan casing, or in the exhaust pipe.
I claim:
In combination with a portable base having a vertical standard secured thereto, a casing having a motor driven fan therein, alug depending from the casing and engaging the upper end of the standard; a bolt said second end of the T and overlying the passed through the upper end of the standbase in spaced relation to the latter, and a ard and through the lug, a-nut on the bolt, a heater on the base underlying the lower end discharge pipe connected to the casing and of the funnel.
5 overlying said base, a T having one end con- In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my 15 nected to said discharge and having a secsignature in the presence of two witnesses. 0nd end projecting downwardly toward the WALTER L. MAJ OBS. base in spaced relation to the adjacent end W'itnesses: of the casing an air pipe connected to the GLADYS WALTON, 10 third end of the T, a funnel connected to NANCY C. THOMAS.
