COAT-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
" Patented Sept. 1, 1908.
Application filed February 17, 1908. Serial No. 413,358. i
To all whom it mayconcern: I I
Be it known that I, FRANK M. KEEDERLE,
citizen of the United States, residing at N'o'r' walk, in the county of Huron and State of .Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coat-Hangers, of which the foil-owing is .a specification.
My invention relates to coat particularly contemplates the provision of a sheet metal structure of this character which will be simple in construction and operation, in which adjustment of the supporting members may be readily and quickly made to conform to the collar and shoulders of a coat, and in which simple and effective means are provided to maintain and support the shape of the structure.
My invention further and specifically resides in the following features of construction, arrangement and operation to be hereinafter described, with reference to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which like numerals are used to designate like parts throughout the several figures, and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved coat hanger, and Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the inner overlapping portions of the supporting members broken away.
In the practical embodiment of my invention, I provide a pair of supporting members 5, stamped from a single piece of sheet metal, and having their extensions 6 formed semicircular in cross section and provided with rounded ends 7, to conform to the shoulders of a coat. The inner ends of the members 5 are flared upwardly and outwardly as at 8, to conform to the neck of the coat, and have their inner ends 9 overlapping one another approximately. centrally of their combined length. The members 5 are provided adjacent their inner overlapping ends 9, and at the lower portions thereof, with curved lateral slots 10, adapted. to aline when said inner ends 9 are overlapped, and having a headed screw clamping bolt 11 projecting therethrough and provided upon the inner surface of said members, with a winged clamping nut 12. The overlapping inner ends 9, of the members 5 are also provided with openings 13 adjacent the upper edges thereof, adapted to aline with one another when said ends are overlapped, and concentric with the curvature of their lower slots 10. The openings 13 of .the opposing members 5, when held intheir hangers, and i if alined relation, thus form the pivot upon which thejr'nerfrbers 5 may be, adjusted toward or away from one another by means of their slots 10, when the clamping members 11 and 12 have been released to move their outer curved ends upwardly or downwardly as desired. A hanging hook 14 is formed of a single piece of wire having its extensions bent back upon one another in the form of said hook 14c, and twisted at 15 at the base of said hook, to hold the same in shape. At the end of said twisted portion 15, the extending ends of the wire forming the hook 14 are bent through the alined openings 13 of the members 5, and angularly oppositely from one another to form curved ends 16 lying within and against the upwardly flaring portions adjacent the inner ends of the extensions 6, thus supporting said flaring portions, and serving as a spring to force the members 5 apart when the clamping members 11 and 12, within the slots 10 have been released.
From the foregoing description, it will be readily seen that I provide a simple and inexpensive, while highly efficient coat hanger of the sheet metal type, having novel means for hanging and supporting the same.
Having fully described my invention l claim:
1. In a coat hanger of the character described, the combination with a pair of sheet metal supporting members having overlapping inner ends provided with alined lateral;
curved slots adjacent their lower edges, and alined openings adjacent their upper edges, and. comprising extensions bent to form shoulder pieces at their outer ends and flared upwardly at their inner ends to form neck pieces, of a hanging hook for said members formed of wire and having its extensions bent angularly through said alined openings and engaging the inner surface of said members, and clamping elements for engagement through said alined slots, substantially as described.
2. In a coat hanger of the character described, the combination of a pair of supporting members each formed of a single piece of sheet metal, having overlapping inner ends provided adjacent their lower edges with curved lateral alined slots and adjacent their upper edges with alined openings concentric with the curvature of said slots, comprising extensions bent to form inner ends, of a hanging hook for said members formed of Wire and having its extensions bent angularly through said alined openings and provided With curved ends to engage the inner curved surfaces of said members adjacent the neck portions thereof,
and clamping elements for engagement pwardly to form neck pieces adjacent their through said curved alined slots, substantially as described. 10 In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
