APPLIOATION FILED FEB. 1a, 1908.
UNITED HIRAM LANE, or HUMBOLDT, IOWA.
BAG-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 25, 1908.
Application filed February 13, 1908. Serial No. 415,755.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM LANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Humboldt, in the county of Humboldt, State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement-to wit, a new and useful Bag-Holder of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in bag holding devices in which is a combination of rod and rock shaft fitting the contour of the top of the bag, with hooks and a looking device engaging the top of the bag and holding it open for the purpose of filling the same; and the object of my invention is to provide a device which may be attached to any upright supports for the holding upright and opening of a sack or bag, and to afford facility for the convenient and expeditious filling of the same by the person engaged in filling such sack or bag without the need. of a second person to hold upright and open such sack or bag during the process of filling. I attain these objects by the mechanism and device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view of the left side of the machine showing end of rock shaft, square head at end of said rock shaft, locking device, and portion of the holding rod; Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the entire device.
In Figs. 1 and 2 the several numerals refer to similar parts throughout the two figures.
The bent rod 4 is the support for the sack or bag engaged by hooks 7, 7, and is so bent as to form three sides of a rectangle except that near and at the angles thereof said bent rod is further bent slightly outwardly substantially as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings herein, and said bent rod 4 and the rock shaft 9 constitute the main frame work of the machine. The said rod and said rock shaft together with the hooks 7, 7 which are on the rock shaft constitute the portions of the machine which engage with the upper portion of the sack or bag and hold the same upright and open. 8 is the end of rock shaft 9 bent in the form of a crank and 2, 2 are plates forming a means for attachment of the device to the supports 1 1 by means of screws Said plates also form bearings for the rock shaft 9 and hold the ends of the rod 4 in place in the grooves 2* formed therein by means of the threaded nuts 14.
11 is a key securing head 10 to the end of the rock-shaft 9.
10 is a square head attached to the end of the rock-shaft 9.
6 is a spring which holds the dog 15 closely engaged to the head 10 except when said dog 15 is pulled back releasing the head 10 from the right angled notch lock in dog 15 and permitting the rock shaft 9, to which head 10 is rigidly secured, to be rocked.
To operate and use the device the sack or bag near the upper end thereofis drawn about the two corners of the rod 4 most remote from rock shaft 9, the opposite side of the up per portion of sack or bag is engaged by hooks 7, 7 attached to rock shaft 9, and the rock shaft is then revolved tightening the sack or bag about the bent rod 4 and hooks, all being held firmly in place by means of the dog or latch 15 which is pivoted at 12 to one of the plates 2 and which is provided with a recess or notch, rightv angled in contour, so as fit closely on the head 10.
13 is a key securing the dog 15 to pivot 12.
6 is a spiral spring attached to the dog 15.
and to a thimble 5 secured to one side of the bent rod 4 and. equipped with a ring for attachment of said spring to said thimble. By means of said spring the dog 15 is held closely fitting to the head 10 and the said head is held rigidly in place until released by raising the dog 15. 7
What I claim as my invention and wish to secure by Letters Patent is A bag holder consisting of plates adapted to be secured to a suitable support, a bent rod supported in said supports by said plates, a rock shaft journaled in said plates and having hooks thereon and provided at one end with an angular head, a dog pivoted to one of said plates and having an angular recessed end adapted to engage said head and a spring for holding said dog in engagement with said head.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HIRAM LANE.
