SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 532,350, dated January 8, 1895.
Application filed October 16, 1894. Serial No- 526,090- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. WEST, of Wellsville, in the county of Montgomery and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheel- Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved machine wrench; and the object of the same is to provide an improved device for removing the nut from the tire securing bolt and at the same time holding said bolt from turning.
I Theinvention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the wrench. Fig. 2 is an elevation partly in section.
A designates a suitable standard or support and secured thereto at a suitable height is the horizontally extended frame B. The frame consists of the upper and lower members 0, D,
respectively which are integrally connected by the vertical side E at their outer ends, and arranged intermediate the ends of the said top and bottom members is the web F. A
crank shaft G extends through support A and web F being suitably journaled therein and fixed to the inner end of this shaft is the bevel gear H. Bolted to and extending inward from the side E of the frame'is the bracket I and adapted to revolve in this bracket as well as in the upper member 0 of the frame is the tubular shaft J having fixed thereon bevel pinion K which meshes with and is actuated by gear H. The depression at the upper end of said shaft is squaredor made angular for the purpose of receiving and holding from rotation the chuck M which is also recessed longitudinally and made of proper size to receive the nut to be removed.
Pivotally secured to a projection N on the upper member 0 of the frame is the lever 0 having the studor point Pupon its lower edge for clamping the bolt to hold it from rotation while the nut is being removed.
In operation the wheel is hung upon the machine as shown in dotted lines in the draw ings with the nut to be removed resting in the depression of chuck M and the lever O is brought down over the wheel with point P upon the head of the bolt and the latter is held depressed by the operator with one hand while rotating the crank shaft with the other. The hot is thus readily removed and will drop' through the tubular shaft into the receptacle Q suitably supported in the frame: By the lever engaging the bolt it will be impossible for the latter to turn. It is apparent that the crank shaft may b extended inward from the outer side of the frame without departing from the spirit of the invention. Itis my intention to provide each machine with several chucks having nut receiving cavities of difierent sizes but which will properly fit the end of the shaft so that they may be used interchangeably.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

2. The combination of a support, a frame secured thereto consisting of the horizontal members 0 and D and the vertical members E and F, the crank shaft G extended through the support and the member F, the bevel gear carried by the inner end of said shaft, the nut turning shaft arranged vertically in the frame, and a bevel gear carried thereby for engaging the first named gear, substantially as shown and described. i
3. In a machine wrench the combination of the framecomposed of horizontal members 0, D, and the vertical members E and F, the
bracket I secured to member B and extended into the frame, the vertically arranged nut turning shaft journaled in member 0 and bracket I, the crank shaft and the gears con- 7 necting the same and the said shaft, substantially as shown and described.
